Understanding Allahu Akbar in Islam | Sandra Akkad | TEDxABQWomen

  • Sandra Akkad remembers the day when Muslims became the "other". It was her daughter's fourth birthday: September 11, 2001. From that time on, Sanda and her family have observed and experienced a rise in anti-Muslim sentiment that has reached an all time high today. Now more than ever, Sandra believes we must fight the tendency to retreat in fear from those who seem different than us out. Instead, we must proactively seek out ways to connect, listen, and embrace each other as humans.
Sandra Akkad is a Muslim Palestinian American woman and a Native New Mexican educator and entrepreneur. Education has always been her passion and she has always been a fervent believer that education leads to empowerment. She is the founder and director of “Tutor-Me”, a learning and enrichment center where she teaches, motivates, and reinforces students in all subjects from K-12. Additionally, she has had the privilege of being an adjunct instructor at UNM where she teaches “Children in Genocide”, a Peace Studies department course. Her time as an educator has brought her to the fore of issues pertaining to cultural identity, relevancy, and diversity. She co-founded “The Red Hearted” initiative which was designed to provide youth of all backgrounds a platform that encourages and engages them in frank discussion aimed at building connections, dismantling stereotypes, and promoting tolerance.

shes well spoken. but i advice you all to read the quran itself. dont judge islam negatively or positively based on her sweet words. i would leave you with this quran verse. Quran 4:34 . Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great.

"Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand."
      (An-Nisaa 4: Verse 34)
"And if you fear dissension between the two, send an arbitrator from his people and an arbitrator from her people. If they both desire reconciliation, Allah will cause it between them. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Acquainted [with all things]."

@Goorpijp Wessel never understand the hypocrisy and the double standard of the followers of Liberalism. Surprisingly, liberals seem hellbent to get ISLAM liberalised and that's why they would often tell you 'why Muslims can't be liberals'? I ask them Why Muslims can't be Muslims? Do you have any problem with it? Why you can't allow us to be what we are? You have your ideology, I have my own. t why do you often thrust your ideology upon me when I never try to Islamise your Liberalism.

I remember one meme video that was Allahu Akbar and a explosion on vine. That's what I knew, those where the connections that I had with the sentence. Since I step my feet here - in the city with thousands mosques - I can hear that every single prayer time. And that made me learn about it. I learned how much love and peace people actually find in that - And after all, the meaning of this sentence - is indeed worship - love - peace. Thank you for your TED.

I have never stopped feeling immigrant, an outsider. Because that is the way it is for us too. I am working my way to convert into Islam. I do have my little doubts of the possibility of not only feeling outsider for the Americans but now outsider for Muslims. I don't know what life will bring but I live in the country, I work, I study, I raise my son and I felt in love with a Muslim Egyptian. I made the decision to come to this country. I am working my path into Islam. I love what I have done and what I have accomplished. Proud from beginning to end.

Nothing, but OP wishes to spread discreet and lies to vilify Christianity in the hopes of solidifying Islam; which he/she knows is a hatful bigoted philosophy and so instead of putting effort to judge their scriptures must instead spread hate to others.

Shall I Tell You Our Secret
Shall I tell you our secret?
We are charming thieves who steal hearts
and never fail because we are
    the friends of the One.
The time for old preaching is over
we aim straight at the heart.
If the mind tries to sneak in and take over
we will string it up without delay.
    We turn poison into medicine
    and our sorrows into blessings.
    All that was familiar,
    our loved ones and ourselves,
    we had to leave behind.
Blessed is the poem that comes through me
but not of me because the sound of my own music
will drown the song of Love.

    Listen, O dearly beloved!
I am the reality of the world,
    the centre of the circumference,
I am the parts and the whole.
    I am the will established
    between Heaven and Earth,
I have created perception in you
only in order to be the
    object of my perception.
    If then you perceive me,
    you perceive yourself.
    But you cannot perceive me
    through yourself,
    It is through my eyes
that you see me and see yourself,
Through your eyes you cannot see me.
    Dearly beloved!
I have called you so often
and you have not heard me
I have shown myself to you so often
    and you have not
    seen me.
I have made myself fragrance so often,
and you have not smelled me.
    Savorous food,
and you have not tasted me.
Why can you not reach me
    through the object you touch
Or breathe me through sweet perfumes?
Why do you not see me?
Why do you not hear me?
    Why? Why? Why?

Sandra Akkad is right. As a Hindu in India I have seen and heard in television shows extremist Muslims shouting Allahu Akbar as a show of Islamic power and defiance against the people of other faiths and the government. These are the minority Muslims but they create the wrong message and impression. The majority of Muslims in India do not share their views but are mute spectators out of fear.
Coming back to Allahu Akbar ,'The greatest, God is indeed the Greatest in all religions. I have read the Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Upanishads as well as the Holy Quran and the Holy Bible. God is One and His description of as eternal, formless, birthless, genderless, omnipresent, body-less and omniscient as also as absolute reality and without partners or parts is identical.
So while uttering the words Allahu Akbar, the Muslim should follow the guidelines given by Sandra Akkad.
In my book, 'One God Many Names' with subtitle 'We are Children of One God' I have identified twenty two core values and concepts such as The Birth of the Messengers of God, their Scriptures, Oneness of God, Forgiveness, Charity , Love, Surrender to God, The Soul, Peace and Harmony and others which are strikingly similar. If everyone irrespective of his or her religion understand this truth,
there will be peace among the people and what happened to Sandra Akkad will not happen again to anybody.
