- Samah Safi Bayazid, one of the first professional Muslim women filmmakers. She lives and works in Washington DC, and was recently at the center of one of many encounters resulting from the recent viral spread of Islamophobia in the United States; she was taken out of the plane a JFK airport because of how she looks. Samah’s experience was a source of inspiration to combat hate with love in order to bridge the gap between the East and the West and dispel myths about Muslim women and community as a whole. Join Samah as she tackles the Islamophobia issue and many other humanitarian issues through her award winning short films, PSAs, drama series and music videos.
Samah Safi, a 28-year-old award-winning filmmaker who lives in Washington DC. She studied filmmaking and screenwriting at New York Film Academy. She became a filmmaker since she was 22 years old to be one of the first professional Muslim women filmmakers in the industry.
Samah brought her Middle Eastern understanding to the west to produce unique humanitarian and bridge-building entertainment for audiences in the West and East, such as Short films, PSAs, TV Campaigns, TV programs, and Documentaries.
Samah hopes that her work and productions will help bridging between audience from different cultures and backgrounds. Some of her work reached millions of views on social media platforms and reached millions of people around the world.
Her latest film “Orshena”, a short film that addresses the refugees issue around the world and the hardship of losing their beloved ones has been selected for many international film festivals and won the Award of Excellence in Indie Film Festival in CA.

Yes it's never been a peaceful religion. You can have some peaceful Muslims (based on personality), but the religion itself preaches violence against nonbelievers.

Beautiful speech Samah! I feel the mass media and our governments political interests have caused so much harm. I was like a lot of them in 2001. I never did take the time to learn of the East. So I began in 01. I never dreamed it would change my life in the way it did. I was a bad drinker in my youth. Drank every day for 13 years. A strange thing happened as the years passed and I began to notice the more I learned of the Middle East, the more I began to see people in a whole new way. I noticed my hate and anger going away. I started eating right and taking care of myself because of the influence of an amazing world I had never taken the time to learn about. And 7 years ago I was able to stop drinking completely and havnt had even an urge for a drink.
Thank you so much for your knowledge and compassion. I believe videos like this are so influential and one of the best ways to bridge the gap. Its where I started 18 years ago. I have an entire list of places I want to travel and see one day. Places like Istanbul, Saudi Arabia, and India.
I know the 2016 election was very hard for a lot of us to watch as the nation pulled itself apart in so many ways. It was so frustrating for me to try and convince people I knew that another people I now know are not anything close to the way mass media like fox news paints them to be. Im so thankful that we have people like yourself here to help people learn. Thank you so much.

@Keith Atchely thank you for being open minded ,kind, and respectful 😊💙 Please visit Saudi Arabia, if you love nature and historical places you should visit the northern province, it's so unique; there's mountains and farms also deserts and sea side , the southern province is so beautiful too there's some beautiful islands there like "Farasan" if you love diving you should visit Jeddah city and check the diving clubs there, the rest of the country have a lot of historical sits and beautiful places also, but this is my personal preference although I'm from Najd province. Having Muslim friends help. I'm a Catholic and I feel very fortunate to have been once invited in their home by a Muslim Couple who have just arrived from their Hajj. It is said that a person coming home from Hajj is very blessed.

Where I live is extremely diverse. My school is filled with girls that are Muslim, Catholic, Christians, and non religious. I have many friends of all different types of people. Asians, African American, Germans, and more. And where I live it doesn’t matter what you look like, it’s that you respect, are kind, and more.
If the world was like your school, it would be a much better place.

I got caught on your comment about "a piece of fabric," how we shouldn't let it be a factor for division. It occurred to me that pieces of fabric have been used for centuries for the purposes of group identification, eg. nuns' habits and flags, helping us divide people into categories we can easily manage cognitively. I applaud your efforts to teach and build bridges, but I believe that as long as people dress to fit within their own groups (from Goth to surfer and beyond) there will be those who stereotype them out of laziness or lack of cognitive "band-width".
