I'm bored of talking about Muslim Women | Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan | TEDxCoventGardenWomen

  • Why women’s rights are seen as being central to the discourse on Islam? And why are we so fascinated with Muslim women? These are some of the crucial questions Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan invites us to think about in her quest to dismantle oppressive structures in society. Suhaiymah is a writer and spoken word poetry performer. She began running the popular blog www.thebrownhijabi.com three years ago where she has written on topics including race, gender, Islamophobia, intersectional feminism and the decolonising of academia. Her work has been published in TheIndependent and she is a contributor to the Cut From the Same Cloth anthology which will be published in 2018-19. Suhaiymah won second place title in the London Roundhouse Poetry Slam 2017 with her poem, ‘This is Not a Humanising Poem’ which subsequently went viral on the internet. As a History and Postcolonial Studies graduate from Cambridge and SOAS respectively she speaks about her topics of interest and research regarding the construction and criminalisation of South Asian migrants, diasporas and Muslims in Britain. She believes in the liberation of all people from every type of injustice and oppression in this world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Joud Toamah Well, where is the venue of this talk? It seems to be either at Covent Garden opera house or from some theatre in Covent Garden, in the West End of London. Apart from the hijab-wearing young lady appearing here, on stage as it were, how many Muslim women, inclined to wear the hijab, have appeared on this very stage in a play, musical or opera? I wonder. May a young lady in the U.K. who wears a hijab dream of 'taking to the stage'? To carve a career in the arts as a Shakespearean actor? Or stage musical starlet?
Or is it always going to be the case that the next time we see a young lady of Muslim background performing on this stage will be at the next doom-laden talk event in ten or twenty years' time?
As you must see, I want to challenge the old stereotypes, too. And I ain't sick of it.
      Any hope?

Oh if muslims women only read the quran with their own eyes and not listen to their lying mullas. The job of a imam is to to keep the sheeple in a state of ignorance for better control and not to enlighten muslims on quranic verses. I challenge any muslim women to actually read what the quran chapter(sura) 4 An-Nisa(The Women) says about you as well as authentic(sahih) hadiths such as "Sahih Bukhari" and "Sahih Muslim" will do. Once you read and understood the verse i will congratulate you on your apostasy and freedom from the shackles of 1slam.

No woman in a burqa (or a hijab or a burkini) has ever done me any harm. But I was sacked (without explanation) by a man in a suit. Men in suits missold me pensions and endowments, costing me thousands of pounds. A man in a suit led us on a disastrous and illegal war. Men in suits led the banks and crashed the world economy. Other men in suits then increased the misery to millions through austerity. If we are to start telling people what to wear, maybe we should ban suits.

Her words are not true. If she would actually believe muslim women are entitled to wear what ever they please, she would encourage muslim women and men all around the world to support those muslim women who decide not to wear hijab or burkini. But that is something we don't see happening. I am tired of listening to stories of muslim women how bad they were treated when undoing their hijabs. Please start supporting those publicly and loud who don't want wear hijab and recognise their value even though they do not dress accordingly when it comes to religious traditions. Let's hear more stories of liberal and kind islam that allows people to live as they please!

Some quote from the Quran ...
An-Nisa, 34 "Men look after women, because Allah has made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great." -> if you fear that your wife did adultery, you can beat her. If you FEAR.
al-Baqarah 2:223 "Your wives are your tilth; go, then, unto your tilth as you may desire"
Quran 4:34 "Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient"
Muhammed married a girl when she was 6 and consume the marriage when she was 9 ... But no, people have prejudice ! And what I said earlier wasn't tell by a muslim woman, it must be untrue ... It is a narrative created by the Media, it is impossible that people can do some independant research, no no ...
By the way, I don't think the bible and the ancient testament is better in is treatment of women if somebody would be tempted to go on this way. I don't have a television too. But it must be the "Media" that I don't watch that make me say that. It is impossible to look at history of the past or have an independant thought. Conspiracy is a better explanation ...

Let me first say I believe in equality, men and women should have equal rights. I don’t personally know how Muslims are treated in western culture, but the two Muslim men I work with when ask said they do not feel discriminated against most of the time. This woman said that Muslim men are being shown as the punisher of Muslim women but that isn’t true, and I agree but just like any woman who is being abused if you don’t report it no one can help you, so please all who are abused say something. While I was deployed in Afghanistan I saw a lot of horrible things being done to Muslim women by Muslim men. I personally don’t know what the answer is but we should be creating a world where victims should be able to receive the help and protection they need.

    • @r.b7979
      @r.b7979 Před 3 lety

It stems from culture that has existed pre-islam mixed in with mis interpretation of text in quran.
The quran states that men are protectors and providors over women. This also sometimes traslated to regulators etc. This is supposed to be a verse talking about obligations of men to women, the rights women deserve from men.but instead prople twist it to mean that a woman must obey her husbands every wish and command outside of reason.
Another text describes a situation in which a wife has been unfaithful. How the best of men are those best to their wives and practice patience but because theyre are tempermental (whilst this is not encouraged) he can lightly tap her skin, not in a way to inflict pain but as a symbolic gesture in an argument that signigies they are close to divorce so she understands the gravity of the situation. If the man actually hurts her ,and her skind turns slightly red she reserves the right to have all her duas against him fulfilled and the angel curse each step he takes.
Voilence against women calls for immediate divorce.
Pre-islam people buried their daughters alive and neglected their wives, hence why these were some of the first things addressed in islam.
One of the last things the prophet saud before passing was to protect the women . It would be disheartning if he saw what muslim men were doing today.

Gender equality in Quran: the word gender equality we tend to think means "the same". Quran teaches gender equity as opposed to gender equality- Rather than being the same/alike, men and women are complementary to one another. Therefore unlike the world that teaches women to emulate men in order to be equal, based on the flawed view that one is better than the other because woman was created from a man(Bible version Eve created from the rib of Adam), Quran teaches that "men and women are created from a single soul...and fear Allah particularly respecting ties of kinship".

@@Hrshsngh_19 That polygamy verse was revealed as a solution to protect women, specific to the context of that time of war when many men died and many women (widows, orphans) left without protectors/providers for the family - in the olden days, women couldn't work/lack education, not like nowadays. Plus the laws for crime against women not yet exist. Apply context, those circumstances no longer apply today. Nowadays that verse is misinterpreted by some ppl to oppress women by saying it is their God given right to take 4 wives. It was never meant as a solution for men's roving eye!
Hence Quran verse that says "lower your gaze". Quran does not give ppl any license to sin!
Quran understood in its entirety: Monogamy is the order of the day. Polygamy was a solution for days of war, the effects of war lasted several generations. Nowadays ppl use the reasoning that the Prophet and companions had multiple wives (ignoring the circumstances of war and widow status) claiming that gives them the right to emulate them, which many later generations continued to do so. Quran warns against following the ways of our fathers instead of following Quran only as guidance.

The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqi` at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. `Umar used to say to the Prophet (ﷺ) "Let your wives be veiled," but Allah's Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam`a the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) went out at `Isha' time and she was a tall lady. `Umar addressed her and said, "I have recognized you, O Sauda." He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of "Al-Hijab" (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).
