    00:00 Hello Everyone!
The Julius Baer Generation Cup, the 5th event on the $2 million 2023 Champions Chess Tour, features three Divisions of 8, 16 and 32 players. Each division is a double-elimination knockout where if you lose one match you drop down to a Losers bracket and can still win the tournament. In the Grand Final if the player from the Winners bracket loses, there's a rematch. The total prize fund is $235,000, with a top prize of $30,000 (150 Tour points) in Division I, $10,000 in Division II (50 points) and $5,000 (20 points) in Division III. The top 3 in Division I and the winner of Division II qualify straight to Division I of the next event on the Tour.
The time control for normal games is 15 minutes per player for all moves, with a 3-second increment each move. In Division I and II the Winners bracket matches are played over four games, while in the Losers bracket there are two games. In Division III all matches are over two games except the 4-game Grand Final. A tie in a match is decided by an Armageddon game with no increment, where the players bid for time they are willing to play with. The lowest bidder gets that time and can pick colour, while the opponent gets 15 minutes. Black only needs a draw to win the match. Official website: championschesstour.com

The actual beauty of the first game was the insane defense of Magnus. Other grandmasters would resign in a heart beat but Magnus almost destroyed Alireza. In fact I watched the live games, there were times Alireza actually blundered due to Magnus defense giving Magnus a chance to even win, but time they say can mess any chess game plan.

It feels weird to criticize a world champion on basic opening theory, but 5..Nxd7 was a mistake. The reason is, you save a tempo developing the knight, but you develop it to an inferior square. Better was 5.. Qxd7 followed by Nc6 which also has the effect of adding a piece to the defense of e7. I first became aware of this idea watching the game Kasparov versus the rest of the world which started 1 e4 c5 2 Nf3 d6 3 Bb5+ Bd7 4 Bxd7+ when I was initially surprised that 4.. Qxd7 was played by Polgar.

13:03 here , Magnus should have played Qb3 which would end in stalemate or if they move their queen then in a draw by repeating moves

    • @dhananjayann5787

it is not forcing to capture the black queen, the king can come to d5 and if captures captures, the pawn can be pushed and promoted

Perhaps Magnus is too self-critical. Humans usually can't see all the ways they could have lost, the way engines can, and one player is usually going to see significant moves another can't. Still, we can hypothesize, had he been able to play any of the greats of previous generations, with modern technology and advancements in chess theory, he might be stronger than any of them were. Not that he should relax with a high rating, but there's no doubt he's exceptional, and perhaps the GOAT - thus far.
