Six months later, Fred's Got Slacks goes triple platinum.
See "The Harder They Come."
while "the devil can't write no love songs" bombs on the charts until it's covered by a band 40 years later and THEN it hits the top of the charts Three weeks running.
@@dragonsword7370 I actually liked that song

Epic observation
That was his. Second epic defeat. Johnny schooled his ass on that hickory stump in Georgia
I often catch myself singing "Fred's Slacks." Absolute banger
Fred's Slacks is a winner!
I go for the “Mondays oh I hate Mondays” line pretty often
On the boulevard though?
Me too lol!
I often catch myself singing Take her easy.
Everyone is saying “Freds got slacks” was a hit but “Fast Car On The Highway Mr Robotron” was the real Gem. True MTV Music Videos worthy with those dance moves.
Fast car 🚗 was my favourite.
Its his Devo tribute.
All those songs are better than anything Chris Gaines did

Love how he “coughs” at 1:00 - like the Devil would be bothered by smoke. Ferrell was a genius when it came to little details in a sketch.
Ferrell the human may also very well have gotten a lungful of smoke but then turned it into a joke lol.
Glad to see this observation just now!
Underrated detail 🤣
@@ryans6280 The King Crimson track playing in the background is an underrated detail also(apparently).
Or he just choked.

One of the most underrated skits in the history of SNL.
patton303: why underrated? That skit isn't all that funny.
I remember seeing it then. It really aged well and the premise is still funny and original.
@@jeromearsenault One of my favorites!
I agree, man. even though it's not knee-slapping funny for most, it is a skit I quote often and come back and watch a couple times a year when something reminds me of it. Maybe it's more funny for musicians or something.
"It's a Fender." LOLOLOLOL.
Honestly one of the best parts about this sketch is that Garth delivered every line perfectly and the timing is great
Not up on country here, I guess. I thought it was Rodney Carrington!
I saw the show when it first aired and he was great throughout the whole thing.
(With the exception of his performance as his alter ego Chris Gaines. It was... meh.)
I thought that was Toby Keith.
I thought that was Busta Rhymes, famous black rapper
I thought it was Chris Gaines.
The devil is left-handed? Makes sense
Left handed people on average have higher IQ's than right handed people.
LOL! How sinister!
bigrigJim higher IQs really come from the fact that in older days, they were shitted on, so their parents worked extra hard to make them better. Adjust etc. So without having that, they are just average.
So they aren't smarter they just USED to have to work harder. today....no one gives a shit. Left handed kids, right handed kids, ambidextrous....They're all either smart or dumb ass shits.
Agon Leed - I find that kind of hard to believe , since IQ is intelligence you are born with , not something that can be learned over time. There is a difference between IQ and knowledge.
I am left handed... It makes sense
"Fred's Slacks" was a real hit in waiting, kid doesn't know music.
I'll take mr.robotron for the win......I was about 14 when that was on TV......and man I almost died🤣......fast cars...on the highway..on the byways.....Mr. robotron
Yeah I wonder if Fred's slacks is public domain or copyright
Fred's Slacks is a winner
ooooohhh Fred's got slacks, on the boulevard!!
I repeat that 30 second clip on my radio full blast all the time lol 😂
Okay but the final song is actually damn good, I wish there was a full version
Same! Garth Brooks could sing the phone book and make it sound good though. Lol
I thought it was just me, and I'm generally not a country music fan. Talent is talent.
I really thought the last song was a real garth brooks song.
The reason it's not a full / complete song is because it belongs to SNL / NBC.
Agreed, “the devil can’t write a love song” is actually some genius lyrics
Zorgas. Borgas. This sketch is 21 years old and it is STILL one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen. AND IT’S DRIVING ME MAD!!!
now officially a quarter century old... dannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnng
Man I am with you. I think of this sketch at least once a week. Genius
-You know what's hard? F-chord, it hurts my fingers...
-Yeah, that's a tough one, Mr. Devil
So many gems ... that line killed me though because I've literally said something very similar before lol. He's right.
When I was young I quit trying to learn how to play the guitar only because I couldn't master the F chord. If I couldn't play the F chord using all 6 strings I wasn't going to continue with it and I didn't. I was a perfectionist.
@@somethingyousaid5059 I learned the F-chord on my first guitar which was an acoustic guitar with, what I later would learn, was the widest freakin' fretboard and the highest unyielding action of any guitar I would ever encounter again having spent the next 20 years in live bands and in studios. My fingers bled working on that F-chord. My parents who got me that loss-leader acoustic were both awesome for doing that and child molesters for doing that.
@@trysometruth
Yeah, I had an uncle who played the guitar way back in the day and I remember that he had a guitar with a particularly wide fretboard and it was impossible for me press the strings on that thing. And of course that only served to reinforce my determination to never go back to trying to learn to play the guitar. I never had the big enough hands or the long enough fingers for it anyway. The piano turned out to be a more realistic choice for me. So I probably made the right decision in not continuing with guitar.
@@somethingyousaid5059 well there are many substitutions for beginner chords you know. If you really wanted to play, you would've found a way.
I like the way Lucifer comes in to King Crimson blasting away.
I know!!....Larks Tongue. Legendary...wonder who picked the music for the skit
Yeah, not many people on here seemed to have picked up on that.
@@avisoncino8665 Probably one of the writers. My personal guess would be Fred Armison(if he was in the cast at the time) especially since "Fred's slacks" is one of the made up songs.
Can we all just take a minute to appreciate the SNL makeup team. Imagine the quick change of doing this makeup for live TV in minutes between skits?! Amazing.
This was Wills first sketch of the night.
@@jimlahey3919 and I’d imagine there was a bit of a gap between his next one
Still though pretty impressive
his outfit was awesome! I'd wear it 😀👍
Fred's Slacks sounds like a British indie pop tune from the 80s, I love it, actually
I love the ending. The devil actually wins since Garth got the idea for the devil song from the devil. So the deal actually worked. The devil is known for being a trickster.
brilliant!!!
Yes I thought the same thing!!
Spot on!
The deal was for the "success he craved"... we actually don't know what level of success he craved or whether he was able to achieve that level of success from the skit. 😉 But I agree, the showing of him coming up with what is some beautiful lyrics and music at the end really ties the skit together so well and gives the audience great closure. Considering they are under tremendous pressure to put these skits together in a few days, absolutely creative genius. One of the best skits ever in my opinion.
He said he would sell his soul for a hit song, but ultimately came up with the song himself. I'm not sure that would count as the Devil fulfilling the contract. They would need a follow up sketch like when Jon Lovitz was the Devil on SNL People's Court to decide it. 😂
2:41 The way he says “son of a bitch!” gets me every freakin time.
I could play 2:39 over and over and over again and never stop laughing. How he says "SON OF A BITCH!" cracks me up every time.
But WILL FERRELL is literally the NICEST and the MOST respectful DEVIL of All Time🤣

Chris D. What the Hell Was That?!
I went to see A perfect circle years ago. They did a song no one knew. With Lyrics like "freds got slacks" and "I got bit by the love bat". After they did it. The crowd was quiet. And Maynard said "they look really confused". Then I yelled "Will Ferrel SNL!". And Maynard said "alright, you got it". I still consider that the time I spoke with the lead singer of A perfect circle.
Seth Stone
That singer sucks. I prefer the guy from Tool.
True. Tool is much better. But I never got to see them live :(
ImaginaryAdversary haha, you win the best comment ever award, friend. Very clever. 👍
Thanks Ian! Seth, I saw Tool in Seattle. $125 for the nosebleeds @ key arena. Maynard hid in the shadows, Danny was awesome, and the visuals were great. At the end of the day however, the best part is being able to say I saw Tool live. Probably wouldn't do it again.
A Perfect Circle is awesome btw
The coughing on his own smoke at 0:59 is probably the best unintentional moment I’ve ever seen 😂

Semi-obscure fact: This exact problem actually contributed to the way "Exile On Main St." sounds. All the bed tracks were recorded in a steamy basement in the south of France to avoid paying British taxes. Keith apparently complained about it the whole time....
Paraphrasing: "Everybody was sweating constantly. I don't think I was ever wearing pants when we were recording..."
