Love this song, heard it sung by many different singers, but this one makes me teary-eyed every, single, time... without fail. The slight "rasp" in his voice in certain words sounds to me like if he was on edge to cry and hit especially hard 😢. Austin did an absolutely amazing job here.
Yes! That slight strain and roughness really brings us into the emotion of the song, the desperation and hope Valjean feels in this moment.
Thanks for your analysis. This was a very beautiful rendition. "Bring Him Home" is a very hard song to sing but Austin nailed it. He put a lot of feeling & emotion to it. He has a great voice for musical theatre songs.

When he was in college for musical theatre he had to work to lose his Georgia accent. He met Home Free on a cruise ship where Austin was working as a in house singers Home Free was on as Guest entertainment and they became friends.When one of the members left and they asked Austin to join they told him bring himself and his Georgia accent 😊

Thank you so much for this fascinating reaction and analysis. What stands out for me in everything Austin sings is that he approaches it like an actor, so he is never simply making a nice noise, but using his impressive technique in the service of the song, and to bring that to the listener.
If you're at all interested in what Austin and Sebastien do with what is sent to them, check out an extraordinary blues called Empty House. Sebastien is a talented arranger and producer and they create something amazingly powerful from a demo that was sent to them. It's not on Austin's channel but on the composer's, known as simply ResurrecSis Music. There are several other songs on the channel that Austin seems to be using to brush up his Broadway chops. Some of us would like him to move beyond country and see what else the world has to offer. We'll see.
If you want to really hear a song that he makes an old song "Crazy" by Patsy Cline sound great. His breath control just makes the song.
This is my favorite Austin performance. ❤️🥰 Absolutely beautiful. I love the clear dictation that he and all of the HomeFree group use in their songs and is why I admire them so much. I never have to research any songs that they perform to understand exactly what the lyrics are saying.

This is the first solo piece I heard from Austin, and I was so impressed with his phrasing. I also think it was the first time that I heard his vibrato. His delivery gives me goosebumps! I saw a live professional production of the play & was disappointed - the singing was pre-recorded (if you've ever transcribed, there a sound to it that's unmistakable). Austin also does a solo version of "Unchained Melody" (on his channel) that's jaw-dropping. I love your insights & analyses - as a musical idiot, it's so informative! When he was a kid Austin sometimes traveled & sang with his father's gospel quartet in Georgia, so if it feels like he took you to church . . .
Pre-recorded sound is really grim!! And when you consider how many talented singers there are who could do the whole thing live, it's a particular shame. It's interesting that when the film was made, of course the sound had to be mixed, but the director instructed that everyone should sing full voice during filming. It really makes a difference.
I really enjoy watching reactors who really feel the music AND reactors who know what they are talking about concerning the music/vocal techniques - you hit both.
When he first joined HF, they had him sing this (with vocal accompaniment, not instrumental) during their concerts to show off his abilities. There are a couple fan videos out there that you might enjoy.
5:07 you shut your mouth, sir!! 😂 that is the unvarnished truth. /jk /jk! One of my favorite parts of this performance is the strain and almost roughness on "prayer." It really lets you feel Valjean's desperation in this moment. Ugh such a gorgeous rendition!! 😭
If you want a shift in his talent, I think you would enjoy Listen To The Music. Cover of Doobie Brothers. Also you can enjoy his song writing ability with his song Playing With Fire which he wrote, produced and sang.
I'm not fond of the video for Playing with Fire, which seems to have little to do with the shape and rhythm of the song, Poor editing. A shame when it's a great song.

This edition of this song brings me to tears every single time! I think it speaks for every parent who ever sent a son (or now daughter) off to war. I loved your analysis. I do think you missed a couple of occasions where Austin had a slight cry in his voice that also added to the tenderness of this prayer (which is what this song is).
Valjean is not sending the boy to war - he's wounded and Valjean is deciding to try to save the boy, at the risk of his own life.

One thing I like about country singers is the casual, relaxed nature. It was interesting to hear where Austin chose to be more country and where to be more classical.
Your analysis helped me hear the differences from other singers like Colm Wilkinson, Micheal Burgess, Alfie Boe and Ramin Karimloo. And even Austin, circa 2015.
Austin has the luxury of intimacy here. So some of his country style works quite well in this setting. And who can deny that last ‘home’.

Nice. My only comment is about how he starts on the word God. It's plainspoken. Simple. It's a strong but humble man on the steps of a old fashioned church, or pausing after evening chores. The song soars after that, but in the quiet places, that's where I'm brought back to. Doesn't fit the story, but it's where I feel kinship in his singing.

I preferred this version. Those live versions were quite some time ago and Austin's voice has changed, improved and matured a lot since then. I always felt he wasn't quite ready for the piece.

Have you heard Faouzia? 23 yo Moroccan born pop singer-songwriter. She didn’t have voice training, but is a strong singer. Her recent cover of Sting’s “Desert Rose” on Chinese TV’s Singer 2024 is a good representation. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts. I wonder what your classical ear will pick up. Not everyone likes her odd vibrato and strong belts. But there IS something there. Makes me want to keep listening. Hope you might find the same.

I am subbed to your channel, but YT did not put any of your videos for HF in my feed. It makes me so angry that the feed includes none of my favourite channels. I will be checking out all your HF reactions right now.
