Recorded July 2021 and presented by Amplify Female Composers in the Fall Female Composer Fridays series, coordinated by Carolyn Craig and Janet Yieh.
Undine Smith Moore (1904-1989) was an extremely significant black composer. Her “Scenes from the Life of a Martyr”, based on the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., was premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1981 and was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Smith Moore received an MA from Columbia Teachers College in 1931, and went on to teach at high school and university levels, often writing pieces for her own choirs. In 1969, she and Altona Trent Johns co-founded the Black Music Center at Virginia State College (now University), where Smith Moore taught. Smith Moore’s varied output includes over 50 choral works, as well as works for piano, chamber ensemble, and solo voice. Her many awards include being named the 1975 music laureate of Virginia, receiving an honorary doctorate from Indiana University, and receiving the Candace Award from the National Coalition of 100 Black Women.
This piece is from the collection, “I Will Trust in the Lord: Five Spirituals”, edited by Anton Armstrong and published by Augsburg Fortress.

Amplify Female Composers is a new platform created by Carolyn Craig and Janet Yieh that seeks to encourage the performance of sacred music by female composers and arrangers. Our hope is to expand the rich repertoire of music in liturgical music programs, and to send this excellent music out into the world as a helpful resource for all church musicians and music lovers alike. The platform also hosts Resources and Articles pages to refer readers to some of the incredible work surrounding the choral and organ music of female composers and arrangers.
