    back in the socket 939 days, I noticed a significant difference between the athlon and the opteron processor. the athlon would crash or freeze in heavy gameplay. ,but the opteron could game forever with no issues, even in the most demanding games of the day. nowadays you can build yourself a machine learning crypto mining gaming and video editing beast with all the things, and it will do all the things. 52k Usd could build something most people should agree is overkill six ways from sunday, like two gold series xeon 6240R (94 threads) , 1.5TB ECC RAM, 4 48GB RTX A6000 GPUS, 8TB NVME SSD and a bunch of other meat on the bones like fancy case, fancy whatever, the days of supercomputing for enthusiasts have arrived :D

    Great video! One question- doesn't additional logical cores count above the physical cores just increase computation efficiency where there are many tasks that can be computed concurrently? Cores introduce parallelism, which may lead to 2 times higher computing power, but threads only make it possible to intertwine the execution of multiple processes- but they do not overlap. Anyway the topic is pretty hard to grasp for me and I'm not sure myself if my reasoning is correct (please correct me if I'm wrong!). Great that you make the knowledge way more accessible. @dom3827 Před 2 lety

      Wow, as wrong as it can get.
      Depending on the application, it can be up to 100% boost. And it is not for compiling and rendering, that was not even in mind when developing this technology.
      The Idea behind HT was to reduce the time where a Core does nothing. This only works so good, depending on the application etc.
      Sure, in Minecraft you do not get a 100% FPS boost. lol

    • @photoniccannon2117
      @photoniccannon2117 Před rokem

      @@dom3827 Most applications won’t see anywhere near 100% of a boost. I’ve done various benchmarks over the years and have seen anywhere from 15% on the low end to up to 40% in certain scenarios (more than the 30% advertised, which I was impressed to see). Hyper threading is still nothing to sneeze at, it’s definitely a sizable boost in heavily multithreaded workloads (especially when different types of tasks are run on different threads). But it’s not necessarily a blanket performance doubler on x86 implementations of SMT either. 30% is a pretty good estimate of average performance gains in my experience.

    Consider this a a point I dont believe was touched on: used server hardware. A Xeon X5690, I may have the number wrong, can be had for around $100 and is breathing on the ryzen 5 3rd gen with some additional features. If you arent scared of aliexpress a motherboard, ram, cpu combo and be as little as $250. Is it the newest? No. Will it get you started with a pretty decent gaming pc? Yes. I built my brother a rig with one and has had zero issues and from what I can tell reviews reflect this too. You also didnt mention Streaming, which is why a lot of people I know are now looking into getting a gaming pc, which requires some extra core count or beefy core clocks (unless you have an nvenc rtx gpu).

    • @danney777
      @danney777 Před 3 lety +2

      @@niallherrera4031 faster is not always better. Some older xeons are "faster" but have a lower IPC (instructions per clock) so a new CPU with a lower clock speed will usually be able to handle a much larger amount of instruction or tasks the a higher clocked older CPU. Generally I still say a 3000 series ryzen is a great buy but if you're on a stick budget and just want to play some games look at the bundles on aliexpress and research the processor they come with.
