When should you choose a workstation and when should you choose a gaming PC?
It all depends on what you're going to use your PC for, obviously, but there is more to it than that.
    Keep watching to find out.

My son ran a dual xeon hp XW8400 with 32gb of ecc ram and 1050ti laterally. Until a few years back he used the quadro that was in it for about 7 years.
It ran flawlessly and even the quadro delivered decent performance until he started to ask it run DX 11 games.
It was replaced with a 1050ti which worked admirably but they've start to release games now that are using instructions not on those old Xeons so some games stop working.
    It's had it's time.
It's lasted ten years past it's retirement.
    Just amazing computers.
I'm trying hard to re-use the case but I'm guessing it will be HP proprietary.
    We'll see.
    Workstations for the win!
    Luv and Peace.

Um......Yes you can....Workstations Get the Same Frame rates as Gaming machines. the only reason u dont want to get a workstation PC over a gaming PC is actually because a Workstation PC will costs u like 10x more money and will get you the same Gaming Performance. there is nothing wrong with gaming on a Xeon if u can get one for a good price.

One of the leading causes for dropping out of engineering programs in university was young adult buying workstations to game, or buying gaming pc thinking they would work and sometimes play...
It's all play in college, who are we kidding. From experience 3 roommates failed classes by gaming too much and not doing hw. Only I survived because I used a fking chromebook with no games and did my work at the university computers.

I wanted to render a very large video but I wanted to use the workstations for another project so I used a standard graphic PC tower computer, and because it would take such a computer days to render the video I left it alone to get on with it. 3 days later it was still working on that video, so I continued what I was doing on one of the workstations and I could smell burning which smelt like solder! It was the PC tower the memory chips was so hot it made a sizzling sound when I touched it with my finger.
The computer had a memory chip failure message. The memory chips were too hot to touch so I used a clamp and put the memory chips in the fridge freezer. Amazingly the next day when I put the memory chips back in the computer they worked! The computer smelt a bit cooked! but amazingly the computer did work!
That is the difference between a workstation and a PC desktop or laptop. The desktop games PC, will play games better than a workstation.. but a workstation has a lot more memory and processors and is used for heavy number crunching day in day out, with server grade hardware.

@@MrPoppy1 Well I dont consider myself an expert. But they will both handle pretty well. I've built 2 P.C's. My first one I invested 600. My second I invested 1900.
I believe the answer you're looking for is yes. Yes the workstation can play PUBG. Pretty well.
A gaming PC usually invests more money in a GPU. A workstation usually invests more in a CPU and a motherboard that can hold two CPUs.
See with a workstation build you can game, while processing some files in the background for video editing for example, and transferring files from one device or location to another, all at one time at a blazing speed.
With a gaming PC, you can do one of these tasks. Such as gaming.... at a ridiculous speed, because your entire system is devoting all of its resources to that one task.

A tower server is a good third option. It basically has similar hardware as a workstation but can often handle slightly more memory and often has more than two CPU sockets. The downside is you might not have more than one graphics option but if you can get a very good GPU in it, you have not only a good Gaming PC but with the heavier duty in general hardware designed for multitasking, storage capabilities, redundancy and sustained high demand use of a server as well as the out of band management features of most servers.

I would add to that. Workstations use raid controller for storage. To get redundant storage. A Raid 1 configuration will use at least two hard desks each one is a mirror of other. So if one of them stopped working you will not lose any data and your work will not stop.
Connecting to multi network is sometimes required so they will have multi nic cards, and you can forget about wireless network for workstations.
Also, they may have redundant power supply.
And they uses high quality material for case. I am talking about heavy material. To stand the harsh environment

In my opinion, if you want to game as well as do art, animation, and design, I would go with the latest Intel or AMD processors and a Titan RTX graphics card or an AMD equivalent. This graphics card is a lot like the Nvidia Quadro cards but at about half the cost. This card will allow you to game at optimum effeciency as well as do top of the line art projects.

gaming machines can do what workstations do no problems at all, it just depends on how complex and intensive the work, rendering a 5 thousand polygon model in 3DS or Maya for example might buy you a couple seconds of time on a workstation if at all, then same thing with CAD drawings - are you drawing a house or a building, same thing with industrial design - are you designing a fire hydrant or a tank, same thing with video editing - are you processing a full length movie or a small 5-10 minute youtube video.., and if the machine is a single user that doesn't need to feed other people resources then your definitely not a server and most mid to high end CPU's are perfect, even if you have CAD, multiple web browsers, multiple reference pictures on second monitor, download data and streaming some music - you still don't need a workstation build and just a mid level gaming machines is fine.

Workstation GPU's are designed to crunch double precision numbers, which are more frequently used in CAD.
In Games the GPU's that overhead is useless, which is why they're not as suitable for that application.
They're also more overbuilt and have more refined drivers, to ensure compatibility with CAD software.

But due to lock down because of covid i play sometime with friends but not like extreme so a decent frame rate of 100-140 this setup provides me which is very much for me and now to be conclude I would suggest you to build a pc with quadro p4000 or less its same or cheaper nowadays and really you will not find anything missing. According to my work its super great. And as i said i am in graduation 2nd year work is important for me. You can take low end quadro cards and learn though them and afterwards you can switch to any other if you want later. But trust me you can barely say its not for gaming. I bought a workstation for gaming which cost me PKR 67000 ($393 according to Google currency converter) and run games on ultra, some games run on very high graphics with 1080p display. I have
      Xeon E5 1620
      32GB RAM
      RX 560
      2TB HDD
      128GB SSD
      635W POWER SUPPLY
Games I played on it are:
      GTA V
      JC3
      JC4
      RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER
      CYBER HUNTER
      TOM'S CLANCY GHOST RECON
      and works smoothly.

Workstation Motherboards have a wider BUS so they can handle more Dataflow !

Why cant I use this gaming PC which has a lot of great specs, it would seem for gaming and workstation use? For 3d graphics and would be able to render a bit faster then your average PC without blue screens and crashes. But allows you to also play games and even use your VR. What exactly are the flaws to this machine here? As a gaming and workstation pc.
