    Bizarre! Elgar fiddles with bitonality gluing the impossible and making flats and sharps collide to shape bittersweet enharmonic stained glasses.

      Though it may seem bizarre, the contrast of having the melody sung alternately in two keys, just a half step apart, seems to add to the other worldliness of the piece. I feel it is hauntingly beautiful. I do not know Tennyson's intent but when combined with this musical setting, it feels as if a sad lament for those who have passed on to peace and eternal rest. I am deeply moved every time I hear this piece.
