ESPN: An Association of Lolcows

  • Lolcow (n) - A person or group of people laughed at for actions that they take, despite not trying to be funny. They may try to take themselves seriously, but they are often "milked" for laughs with or without their knowledge.
    I never thought I'd see the day where I would be criticizing what was once a staple in my life, but it can no longer be avoided. ESPN has suffered near-crippling subscriber losses and has undergone several waves of layoffs in the past few years. With ESPN's incredible stubbornness and lack of vision for their network, it has, yes, become a lolcow.

    ESPN's downfall began with the death of Stuart Scott. There's too much news and not enough highlights. I understand covering big trades, signings and other major news in the sports world, but you don't need a live 24/7 cam on Lavar Ball and Lebron. They don't need to talk about Lonzo Ball releasing a new shoe. ESPN focuses too much on NBA and NFL (as evidenced by the fact that NFL Live and The Jump air year round) and not enough on the NHL (which is growing in popularity but ESPN still doesn't have a show for it), MLB (Baseball Tonight only airs 3 times a week during baseball season and never during the offseason), and soccer (which is the undeniably the most popular sport in the world). It's good to have one or two shows like PTI, but the rest of the time should be for Sportscenter, games, and shows for the Big Five sports (NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, and soccer).

    I can't believe that it's been so long since I've watched any sports shows that weren't NFL games that it gives me feelings of nostalgia.
    I remember in my early 20s (I'm 35 now) watching Sunday NFL Countdown. It got me up early on Sundays because I had to see it, and I would usually keep my eyes glued to the TV for at least 2 hours of it. The constant stream of information was so amazing. Even though back then I only had 2 games a week to watch because I just had basic cable, as opposed to Sunday Ticket I have today, I actually enjoyed it more because ESPN was just so awesome to watch. They gave you things from a billion points of view: Coaching, fantasy, player perspectives, history, summaries, injuries. Yes, they still do all of these things in a condensed form, but back then they went into incredible detail about everything, and it was 90% about the sports.
    Today, I listen to Fox Sports, ESPN, it's the same race drivel nonsense where sports now is just the thing in the background, an excuse to talk about social justice narratives. I'm not against these things. I would like to see outcomes between all groups better, but do I want this political stuff with my sports? NO! I'm sitting there, either by myself or with my stepdad, just relaxing and listening, soaking in the information and discussing and debating things. Politics is about the last thing I want to think about when I'm watching an NFL game or getting info, and I am a pretty political person outside of all of that.

      Colin Cowherd is like the Cenk Uygur of sports; he's edgy and opinionated, smug as Amy Schumer, right about everything past, present, and future, and if you like him, you love him, and if you don't, you're calling in to mock him right now. Personally, I don't like him all that well; he's half Skip Bayless and half Mitt Romney, two people I find reprehensible, packaged into an MSNBC host pretending he cares about sports beyond the occasional Lebron highlight or Patriots' playoff win.

      @pittland44 Před 7 lety +32

      I think that's their biggest problem, that and the fact that they've become completely hostile to opposing viewpoints (this even supersedes the fact that they've abandoned covering such things as NASCAR, Golf and the NHL, which make no mistake really does hurt their bottom line). You can't regularly alienate and antagonize roughly 50% of your audience on a regular basis and expect them to stay tuned in to the channel. A good example of ESPN being downright retarded about all of their political nonsense (and they are nonsensical about it) was when they gave the Arthur Ashe courage award to the athlete formerly known as Bruce Jenner, rather than Lauren Hill, the young college basketball player who was dying of inoperable brain cancer and trying to raise money and support for people in a similar position. It shows what a bunch of walking jokes the staff at ESPN really are.

I watch Highly questionable more for the comedy rather than the sports coverage as I find Dan, Bomani, and Papi work really well together. I like Jemele and Michael smith but you were right about them trying too hard.
