    Thanks so much for this review. I read this for my eng. 1302 class and needed better wording for an essay. The diction in the story can be difficult to put into today’s vocabulary😂

    One of the best short stories from an American writer! I remember hating literature (love it now!) but will never forget when I enrolled into a critical thinking literature course during my first year of college and we read this around Halloween time. It was the most frightening experience as I sat on my deck overlooking rural America during a trip to my uncles house. I never saw any forest, woods, or wilderness the same after reading it...I hope they make a movie out of it!

      Thanks, Graff!!! Hawthorne is one of my absolute favorites and I might do more videos on some of his other short stories at some point. The Scarlet Letter was the first book in the literary cannon that I picked up to read on my own and not as a school assignment, so he’s a bit of a sentimental author to me haha.
      Thanks for the positive feedback on the video! I always appreciate your comments!!

      @@bookritique5423 - I read The Scarlet Letter a little less than 40 years ago. I've also watched a film or two, so I do not really remember the author's true intent (especially since adaptations can take liberty in those areas). Not saying I will get to it soon, but I would like to revisit that book in the future. You are really trying to make me smarter. You put these bread crumbs in front of me...and I am picking them up. Thanks for your videos.

  • @ChristyLuisDostoevskyinSpace

    I had to listen to go listen to this story, of course, when I saw your video 😂 Fantastic review- I didn't think about how he "lost his faith." And yes hypocrisy is definitely a big theme for Hawthorn!!

    A great video about a great story. The story reminds a bit of Plato's "Allegory of The Cave", the revelation of the true nature of reality being the inherent corruptness of man in general and all the people he respected specifically. I would also wonder if it influenced H.P. Lovecraft's "The Festival", a story about a person who goes to town where his family came from for a centennial tradition that turns out to be a festival worshiping the Old Ones, which he resists and is found the following day at the edge of a cliff near the sea.

    • @Ereheru
      @Ereheru Před 4 lety

      @@bookritique5423 Well, I enjoy Lovecraft, but his work is mostly horror (with some Dark Fantasy thrown in), so you might not enjoy it. I'd recommend "The Call of Cthulhu", "At the Mountains of Madness" or "The Dunwich Horror", though Dakota will never forgive me if you read any of those.

    I read this story in high school, & the overwhelming bleakness of it turned me off of Hawthorne completely. The closest I've ever come to him since then is watching Easy A. I find it hilarious that he's described as a "romantic" author, but that just highlights the difference between style & subject matter.
    I thought I'd remembered implications that Faith, like Brown, had not gone into the woods completely willingly, & that the two of them were being coerced into an initiation ceremony that the rest of the village had already done previously. Brown's loss of trust in Faith came about because he didn't know if she'd heeded his warning not to complete the ritual. Of course, you've read it far more recently & would remember it waaaay better than I do.

    hav read this story Numerous Times. and hav always missed a few things. here i thought that the guy Goodman Brown was walking with was actually a demon🤣🤣 glad to know i was close. what i always missed was his wife at the ritual. i was always too caught up in the ritual and how they tied back to the witch trials. glad to know i wasnt too far off from the story. thanks for clarifying the story! 😊 ❤
