    Hi everyone - in the summer I packed up all my belongings and headed to Massachusetts in the USA to embark on my Camp America / Camp Leaders adventure at Camp Romaca.
    I had so many people ask me what I wish I knew before going (such as Camp counsellor secrets, what it's really like teaching at a summer camp) that I did a Camp America Experience Q&A video which you can watch here:

    I think for fairness of this video - you're not talking about Camp America the company, but an experience you had at one particular camp through the agency Camp Leaders.

      Generally looking into it as well as talking to friends about it , it's a great experience and you get a good reason to travel long afterwards besides that tho your earnings are not worth it and if you plan traveling after it won't cover the full cost. So for someone that already has a job it ain't ideal, as far as work experience I think it is helpful only for a handful of positions and if you are looking into getting in that line of profession.

    my jaw actually dropped when you said they held your paycheck over your head! that's awful etiquette in any sort of job. that and the disappearance of all the staff on the last day sounds so bizarre and the complete opposite of what happened at my camp (I was often having so much fun I forgot I was going to get a paycheck at the end of the summer! and after the first 2-3 weeks they allowed people to take out small amounts of cash from paychecks to pay for days off etc, and all of the senior staff was waiting at the gates giving everyone individual hugs as we left to get on the bus) but I'm so glad you still managed to feel the camp magic and form amazing bonds despite how strangely all of that happened!

    • @CharleyBourne
      @CharleyBourne  Pƙed 6 lety +2

      Yeah it almost felt like we were at school being threatened by teachers! Omg that's so sweet they gave you hugs as you left! I honestly have no idea where the senior staff went it was so creepy!

      if it makes you feel any better, experiences like mine are a lot more common than the one in this video, i've found :) no matter what agency you go through, you should have an interview with someone who can answer your questions about the particular camp you're being considered for (often a senior staff member there) and you can totally ask about the culture or any questions you have. I knew from my interview that my camp promotes a large camp "family" feel and focuses on building strong, kind relationships. Lots of them do, not just mine! I went to Camp Wah-Nee, but getting placed by an agency will make sure you go to a camp where the activities AND culture interest you :)

    The concept you discussed of “you have to continue even if you’re sick” is worryingly not limited to your camp. I saw them push counsellors out who had bronchitis, pneumonia etc to go lifeguard. I had a piece of machinery dropped on my foot and wasn’t allowed medical attention for 3 days as they “had no one to cover for me and I needed to just suck it up” and after my foot was put in a cast and I was told to continue teaching. My foot is still in a cast 5 months on and I’m due surgery now. As you’ve said in your other videos, if I had said no then I’d have had to pay that £2,500 which wasn’t an option, so I had to continue!!

    From your agency, Camp Leaders' website:
    Time Off/Wellbeing
    Each camp is different in the way they structure time off, so check in with your camp about your time and days off. If it doesn’t sound right then don’t be afraid to ask your supervisor or contact the Camp Leaders US office.
    Camp is great fun, but it is also extremely exhausting and you do not have much time to yourself. Be sure to take time out for yourself, during off periods at camp and on your day off.
    Summer camp can be an intense environment and we want to make sure that you’re taken care of not just physically but emotionally too. If you feel you’re overwhelmed, take the time to speak to someone or give us a call to check in with you.

  • @Magnet108
    @Magnet108 Pƙed 5 lety +3

    Do not let any of what she says put you off camp BUT do realise there are hugely different expectations that employers in the US have to employers in the UK. One big difference is not having your phone while on shift. Most camps will provide lockers where phones can be locked away and charged during the day and again most camps will allow you to use your phone while not with campers. For example in the morning before wake up, during the day if you have a period off or in the evening after your campers have gone to bed and you are on your time off. As for camps withholding paycheques it doesn't ever happen unless you are actually fired in which case you will receive what you're owed for what you've worked. A bad camp shouldn't put anybody off doing camp, there are hundreds of amazing camps out there, I'm returning for my 5th summer and honestly yeah it was kinda tough going in my first year but that because its a completely new work environment. Also in terms of time off you need to stand your ground same goes for if you are poorly, your time off is your time off. My advice would be do it again except this time apply to an agency that runs big hiring fairs so you can go, talk to camp directors, figure out what their policies are and what they would be like to work for and go from there.

    We are also aloud pay cards so we can get our money throughout camp. And we would never work on our off time 😂 no way! And if we were sick and diagnosed by our nurse, we had to stay in bed in the nurses office.
    I honestly believe you got the worst possible camp. I know so many people who have been and they never had any of this. Shame you had a bad experience!!!

    The closest thing I have to compare your experience to is Girl Scout count a long time ago LOL. I absolutely hated it. I heard all the fuss somehow it was so cool to go to and how much you had to work to get up to the point where you could go to Girl Scout camp and I thought I just had a bad person experience so I did it again the next summer and it was exactly the same horrible. They made me scrub toilets because I wouldn't be quiet during that time LOL. I never cleaned a toilet before that. I personally didn't like it at all I mean there is a few good times during it but overall not a good experience for me personally. I know I couldn't be a counselor at I can't either because I like my personal space way too much. I mean I have two girls of my own but they know to give me my personal space when I want it especially during my hour and a half bath time😂. I really enjoyed listening to your story though. Totally pointless most of these points you've made as it all depends on what camp you've gone too. And your camp sounded terrible. Mine was a lot different to yours and for the most was brilliant. Also the whole phone thing; you are working at your job and shouldn't have it on you anyway. I'm sure you checked it in downtime and that is fair. You are being paid to work, not socialize with mates back home.

Totally understand that I’m there to work, however, for the well-being of staff who are away from family across the other side of the world, when already in such an alien setting, I felt they could have been more reasonable in not making it so hard for us to keep in touch. Not saying I want to be sat texting friends all day just would like to be able to at least quietly and discretely sit and text my mum while I’m in my bunk. Why is this called "The Truth about Camp America; What they don't want you to know"? This is just a laundry list of your physical and emotional difficulties that you experienced at your one particular camp. Of course Camp America wants you to know these things, and I'm quite certain you would have been "warned" of everything if you reviewed your camp's website and poked around on Reddit a bit. I hope you realize that these things that made your life at camp so hard are pretty much things that, in one way or another, will continue to plague you for your entire life, especially if you get a real job with a real boss, and/or have kids of your own someday. Also, if you had no idea that it rains regularly in America, you really didn't do your homework. It's not one big California here. America is as varied in its climate as all of Europe, that's like being in Denmark and shocked that it is snowing, having assumed it would be warm and sunny like in Spain. I've worked as a camp nurse for nearly a decade, and I'm really surprised that you just didn't go to the nurse about that reaction you described. I could have helped you with a dose of Benedryl. Regarding your paycheck, you should be telling the Agency Camp America about that, they will definitely be able to straighten that out with your particular camp if you are describing the situation accurately. I'm sorry your experience wasn't positive, but hopefully it toughened you up a bit as you grow and mature as a person. EDITED to add: I checked Camp Leaders' website. They TOTALLY say bring a raincoat and warm hoodie.

I would avoid camp unless you have 1. Someone there with you to support you also as a councillor (be it friend family etc) or 2. Know the camp directors or have them recommended by a friend

    I think you are talking about the camp not the agency you used to travel. Weather is dependent on where you go so if you dont do your homework seems like that's a problem you have. As far as not having your phone in front of kids there are so many reasons why this is logical. Kids contacting home phoning friends accessing your private pictures. The pay check being dangled is illegal and sounds camp specific. You should be prepared to work. It's not a vacation. Your job is a counselor in a sleepaway camp. You should get your breaks and your days off/nights off. If YOUR CAMP didnt do this its camp specific and I think you are being irresponsible sending a message that this is EVERYONE'S experience. You should rename and align your comments with the camp you attended. Sounds like you were not prepared by your camp before you arrived. It's the hardest and most rewarding experience you will ever have in your life. You will probably hit a low point but it will be matched with a high point. Again this message is tailored for the camp you were at do not tarnish the experience of others.

    As somebody who will be working at a summer camp (one very similar to yours) for my 6th consecutive summer in a couple of weeks, I really struggled to watch this. I think 'what they don't want you to know' is a pretty irresponsible way of wording it. I hope that the way you portray an experience that honestly, I just don't think you were fully prepared for, doesn't put people off experiencing something as magical and life changing as camp. Being a camp counselor is TOUGH and nobody hides that. The agencies don't and the camp leadership definitely doesn't. I've scrubbed goose poop off lake toys and unclogged toilets and cleaned up puke and had about 8 hours too few sleep for the job I'm doing. But I've also had the opportunity to develop the most amazing bonds with my co-counselors and campers, find a family across the other side of the world and develop in so many ways! I'm sorry you felt so negatively about your experience at camp but I genuinely believe working at camp is the experience you make it and that if you're going to use your platform to talk about camp, you could maybe do that in a way that doesn't potentially misinform others!

      @CharleyBourne  Pƙed 5 lety +3

      Thank you for your opinion. To be honest I don’t really agree with ‘being a camp counsellor is tough and nobody hides that’. I really felt that was totally glossed over in my whole application process. We were shown incredible looking videos that made it look like we would be doing so many activities and getting so involved etc. At my camp (I can’t speak for yours) that wasn’t the case. I also know (now since being back and researching) that some things were totally illegal such as blackmailing us with our pay cheque.
      I do however feel that I did include some positives in this video because all in all I’m still glad I had the experience and I did want that to come across in all my camp videos. Thank you for commenting though I do value everyone’s opinions and do try and improve my videos where I can
