The firebox works fantastically well for grilling. You build a bed of coals, and away she goes. You can bake whole chicken over the firebox. It's all a matter of skill.

I don't have much experience with a lot of other stoves but the firebox but I do have has more than met my expectations.two hours of sustaining the fire is pretty rough on metals. I use the firebox, but I have found it's really hard to regulate the flames to keep meat from burning. There is a way to use the ash tray to choke oxygen from the bottom but I haven't experimented with that yet. I have a little 6 inch cast iron I use to make hamburgers with and my 15 inch cast iron balances fine on it as well for more complicated recipes. Also there is a way to put an elevated platform in the stove to rest charcoal briquettes on. This stove is great for making coffee in the morning as well. With a little finesse you can get a good coal base going and just toss a stick or two on once in a while to lick the meat. but really it's just easier to use a pan, preferably cast iron. Hope my experiences help.

There’s a really good reason Steve (creator of Firebox) uses lump charcoal when he grills on his stoves. You don’t get the charring and soot all over your food that you get from wood. If you’re cooking in a pan, wood is fine, but for grilling, you’ve gotta cook with coals or you might as well eat that pan of ash when you’re done.

The stove itself works perfectly and is super robust but heavy .... if you know how to use it, which this guy doesn’t.
