    I built 5 this afternoon. I love this project they are going to make great gifts! Useful tip drill all the holes put them on the dowel rod then cut the shape of the tree. Way quicker and and if the holes are a little off it will not matter if you do it this way

    Matthew, there are usually many similar ways to make the same kind of craft. When I see them popping up all over CZcams, I skip them and look on YOUR channel. I know I’ll always find the absolute best way to make it. You never start out by using some tool I’ll never afford and you talk to 99% percent of your viewers. And at a pace we can easily follow. If I could only watch one woodworking channel it would be yours! I hope this gives you some idea of how much I appreciate your time and love of teaching at my level.

    Wow...great idea my man.
    I'm a little down on money right now and decided to drop $25 on the wood for 4 of these 3ft trees in hopes Id sell them. We posted them online in the small town I live in lastnight and they're already spoken for!! A little hard work for a couple of days here and there in my spare time and I made $175 profit.
    Can't thank you enough for taking the time to work up an idea and a cut list and posting the video. Definitely a blessing for me and my family this week!
    Have a Happy Thanksgiving with your family!
    Take care.

    I make cedar wind spinners like this. I cut to 1/4" strips, length depends on what you want. So, to make even smaller trees (1-foot to 18"), use 1/4" strips to make it aesthetically appealing. This is a great idea to get started on. I started too late on the Pumpkin Lanterns this year. Love your channel.

I can see making a ton of these in my free time throughout the year and then setting up shop at farmers markets or something and making a killing. Actually idk if you have any videos on it, but covering good spots to sell or ways market yourself (besides the common facebook pages and such) would be a good video in itself. I'm sure some people would place orders online or social media, but these are probably great impulse buys too if you target the right places.

      So I made both the 3ft and 7ft versions and found that a long strip of the same cut board with double stick tape attached vertically across the strips makes the able to stay flat while storing and easier to transport. I like them not being locked in place after spiraling cuz then you lose the customizable option of how much to spiral it.

    I love this. And to limit movement I think I'd add a couple small holes at each end to feed some fishing line or small pins through. You could even use those holes to create an edge to it too. I think I might use the pins, that way it can still be taken apart to be put away. I can't wait to make one!

    Mathew, just curious as to how you keep the spirals from separating and moving around during handling. Is this accomplished with the top ornament putting the pressure on the slats?

    • @BarrySumpter
      @BarrySumpter Před rokem

      I drilled a hole in the top centre down into the dowel. Then a screw from the top into the dowel. Tightened just enough to keep the spiral while transporting.

    I'm super excited to build the 3 foot one to start, but I wanted to know how you got the grain to pop on the finished ones. Did you use an oil or varnish? Has anyone stained them? I would think a poly finish would make them more difficult to turn

    My variation uses reclaimed mahogany from a deck. I have the whole deck! I mix the red mahogany with the pine. Looks very high class. I market them with different color lights and different tops for Halloween/Fall, 4th of July/Summer, and Christmas. Makes it almost evergreen. Well almost!

    Hi Matthew. How do you stop the pieces from spinning? I make wind spinners the same way but use threaded rod and tighten firmly so they don't spin. Great projects, I'l be building these for sure.

    • @MatthewPeechWoodworking
      @MatthewPeechWoodworking  Před rokem +4

      The small ones are a tight fit because the hole and the dowel are both 5/8”… and the large one doesn’t spin bc of the weight of the ones above it. The further up on the big tree they can spin but it’s still requires a little force to do so. I hope that makes sense.
