  • This part 1 one of my cedar deck build series. I am building a ground level cedar deck. Here I cover the basics of framing, layout, laying deck boards, and how to picture frame your perimeter so the miters never open up! Thanks for watching!

    This craftsman does cabinet level work and detailing on a deck, Great to see the new generation giving attention to fine fine detailing. AND does professional level camera and editing. Glad to know that we (older types)are leaving the profession in very capable hands

      Thanks, I was fortunate enough to work for those men you speak of and I know I greatly appreciate their teachings! Still have alot to learn, honestly that's why I love youtube. Have you ever seen spencer lewis of insider carpentry, or Essential Craftsman?

      Really? Seems to me the gap between the boards isnt large enough.. at least where i'm from.

      @@Cyclicalcation good catch, used the tongue of a square, wasnt enough. leaves and debris will settle in the gap vs falling through. What do you use to space deck boards.

      @@AMAYERICAN standard #8 deck screws. We get a lot of snow but this allows the boards to contract with moisture

      @@AMAYERICANdidn’t the board shrink a bit? I used my square and the gaps got a tad bit wider over time. Worked fine for me… Looks great!

      Thanks brotherman! I appreciate it, I have learned a lot from some really great carpenters on youtube, figured I could try and contribute. As far as picture framing I think biscuits are key. Even if you do a composite deck you can find composite biscuits. That deck is now 2 years old and the miters are still tight as day one.

    Good looking deck and good video. Love the look of cedar. the boards look a little tight. Curious ... is there enough room to allow water to drain between the boards?

      Good eye! Gapped um too tight learned that lesson the hard way haha. Water drains but debris builds up and needs cleaned out.

    I noticed you used 1x6 material for the decking surface. Did you find that thickness to be sufficient in terms of strength? I had a lumber yard tell me I should go with 2x6 instead. Thoughts? Thanks

    • @AMAYERICAN
      @AMAYERICAN  Před 2 lety

      I used 5/4 deck boards so actual thickness is 1 1/4'. What is your joist spacing?

      @AMAYERICAN  Před 2 lety

      Man that’s a good question I wish I knew. I have heard that you don’t want Tompsons water sealer though. I remember sikkens being the best five years ago but the formula changed due to epa. I would stop into your local paint shops and ask what the pros are using in ur area. Let me know what you get figured out brother !

      @@malinoisnation9392 you bet thanks for watching ! I actually avoid miters on picture frame boarders. I just do a butt joint and orient the end grain in the least noticeable direct. As long as you ease the edge 1/8 round over bit it looks great. And you never have to worry about it opening up. I covered that in the deck stair/ stamped concrete vid. What are your thoughts on that method?
