This is absolutely the best bike instructional video I've ever seen. I've been needing to replace the front forks and handlebars and grease the bearings up and I remembered having seen your video a couple of years ago and looked it up again! Thank you so much!!! You helped me a lot, I hope your dreams all come true.
Awesome. Easy to follow and explained literally everything I needed to know, as someone with 0 knowledge going in.
Glad to hear!
I was always confused as to what the top bolt does, vs the locknuts at the headset. Now I understand, thanks to your video!
Just saw your excellent video. I found an abandoned bike and fixed it thanks to your video. Loved the "tip" about handlebar height adjustment, works just as wanted ! Cheers
Cj I cannot thank you enough for sharing this video you just saved me a ridiculous amount of money that a local bike shop wanted for doing this simple and super easy job now I know I can do it myself so thank you 🙏
You're very welcome, I'm glad this tutorial is helpful for you!
I unscew my screw Al the way out
@@cjhoylegreat little diagram, too.
I've got an old bike to refurbish and this video is excellent. It should be all I need to check out the head set. Thank you.
Glad to hear!
This was so helpful, thanks CJ! My kid's bike had this problem after a service at the bike shop. I was expecting destroyed bearings, but it just needed tightened. A two minute fix and good as new.
Glad to hear. Nice work!
Great video on the headset as lots of us still have the old style with the quil 👍👍
Thanks Jim. In the process of making this video I realized that I actually don't currently own any bikes that have the newer threadless style headset.
Very thorough explanation! Appreciated!
Thanks i come to your videos for that extra clarity
No one on youtube can explain better then you, thanks for this great tutorial.

Awesome, glad to hear!
Very nice tutorial, with all needed information and without smug aura that is typical for the 'road cyclist' aka 'the road plague'. Thank you very much @cjhoyle
No problem, I appreciate the kind words.
That was really interesting! Learning a lot of great info from your videos! I like the saying on your shirt too!
Thanks! It was one of those shirts that I knew I wanted right away when I first saw it.
@@cjhoyle Yes, I know what you mean, I've bought shirts like that before. Had to buy a shirt once because it said take a hike on it, and I like hiking lol! I actually don't have any biking shirts yet though.
great video!!

@@cjhoyle Each time I run into a problem, you have a video to help. I have rehabbed 8 bikes in the last month and your videos have helped me on each one. I am now rehabbing a diamondback mountain bike I pulled out of the dump, lol. It is nice and I just got the donor bike from a friend to finish the build. Thanks for all the time and effort you put in on those videos. Keep them coming.
The sequel no one ask for.... but definitely needed
💚 Good video!

CJ... Sending my thanks to you
for the detailed attention and
hard work put into producing
your excellent bike repair videos.
Your instructions make it clear just what is the what, and you've made each one easy to understand and to follow.
In the Loose Front Fork Video
you went beyond the call of duty, showing the cutaway cross section of the thigamajigs.
Just Great! Thanks Again my bicyclist friend for making these repairs so understandable.
Sending good wishes.

Thanks, I appreciate the kind words! Glad the video was helpful for you.
Nice tutorial. The amount of play in the front brake caliper is unsettling.
haha yes, that was next on the list of 'things to fix' on that bike. Thanks.
@@cjhoyle hey nice vid. Did you get around to fixing the brake calipers ? Coz I've got the same problem in an old bike and the same type of brake caliper.
Thank u
It's perfect
Thanks.
Any videos for disassembly of a threadless headset? Thanks
I'm afraid not.
What do you do if the cones and races are pitted? How do you get the lower cone off the fork? Does that thread on too? Do you need a special tool? Also if the threads are stripped on the fork how do you prepare another fork? Thanks for advice as the shops here charge a lot to do this and I thought it was because they had to remove all the cables, but wow it's easy and can save a lot! Thanks!
The lower cone is normally pressed in place. The one time that I've needed to install one, I was able to do it using a piece of pipe and a hammer.
Great video, but I don't get why the cone doesn't have proper hex edges to tighten it,basically only upper nut can be tightened with a wrench, while I had to hold cone with my bare hands and the washer in between doesn't seem to prevent cone moving when the upper nut is loosened or tightened.
@2:45 Is it possible to also unalign the bolt from the bottom-up after taking the front brake off? Struggling to do it in the way of the video
You would need to pull from the bottom to un-wedge it, but yes this is possible if you thread the bolt in from the bottom. If it's really badly stuck, you might want to dry spraying it with some penetrating oil to break down the rust.
3:35 what are the parts called that hes removing the 3 first ones?
The parts of a headset area sold as a set, and will very from one model to another. But generally they consist of threaded rings and non-threaded spacer rings.
so what if i took off the rod inside the stem how can i put it back
If you remove the stem from the head tube and look down, can you see the metal piece that the rod screws into? Probably your best option is to remove it from the head tube and reassemble before reinstalling the stem.
I came here cause i fd up pretty good but now after like 2 hours im done with fixing my bike.
Nice work, glad you got it fixed!
Can you help me? I screwed the thing and i forgot to adjust it to the height i want and when i unscrewed it the thing that was attached to that screw was missing!! Then i couldnt screw the screw in. HELP!!PLZ
So you unscrewed the bolt too far and the round end-piece came off? if you flip the bike upside down, the piece should fall out.
@@cjhoyle thx bro me and my friends just fixed it. The piece was stuck in the thing as u said but it wouldnt come off when i put it upside down but with a little effort we managed to screw the bolt in the piece and get it out
@@idk-kz2jg perfect!
Hey, i followed the instructions of your video but still wigly can you help me?
Is it possible that the wobble is coming from a different part of the bike?
I my cycle Steerer stem got strucked i tried everything help me
Did you try the techinique I showed in the video (hammering on the end of the bolt)? Have you tried applying penetrating oil?
My bikes handlebar is giving me a problem I tried to put the stem and tighten it but it does not tighten
Can you tell me a good type of white lithium grease to use or link where I can order some?
SAME BRO
What should one do if the thread has worn out?
When you say 'worn out' do you mean that the threads are stripped? If it's the outer threads on the fork that are stripped, you may be able to clean them up with a very small file (very carefully). If it's the cone or lock rings, it's probably best to just replace them.
@@cjhoyleon my pretty old bike, I feel thread maybe worn out because tightly the nut causes it to slip again and again. Is there any remedy for this?
@@sntainment4079 Hi SN! What happened in your case? Also wondering if all the cones and races are pitted then what? How doyou get the lower cone off that's I think pressed onto the fork? My upper nut slips badly and wondering if I need a new fork. I have think ahead and to go to a rental bench for $5 an hour as I live in a very small apartment that I still have a lot of storage items taking up room.
How to fix threadless tho?
It's a different procedure entirely.
I’m aware of that, but do have a video or something how to fix it?
Bike handlebar-headset to forks-wheel safety issue: Current design doesn’t allow perfect handlebar-wheel alignment, unsafely swivel’s out of control if loosens, and won’t turn if too tight, so a safer design is required.
