    To answer your English/Japanese question, Miku writes for world domination. When that is achieved, you will be forced to learn all the lyrics verbatim. The English parts are to make it easier to for you to succumb to their control. She’s an evil yet benevolent genius.

    Okay, about that English words mixed in, there's two stories about them,
    1. Is what Miku says, she wanted everyone to be able sing with them some parts of the song when they are live with everyone, so she mixed in some non Japanese words,
    2, it's to make the song flow perfectly, most Japanese pop rock songs does that, it's so that the song lyrics flow with the tune perfectly and keeping the catchiness and some words has to be English as it's Japanese counterpart sounds very different and may not mix well with the flow,

    • @ROFLWAFFLELAWL4
      @ROFLWAFFLELAWL4 Před rokem +21

      Yes on the first part, not entirely sure on the 2nd part. It's not inherently a thing in all Jrock. It's just that in Japan English is...well...frankly it's just seen as cool lol. We also have A LOT of words taken from other languages. Like Ramen. We even call toilets..well toilets (トイレToire) but have our own word for urinals who may still use it for toilets in general depending on generation.
      So to say its used because of "song flow" I wouldn't say. Not being a musician I wouldn't know but being Japanese I can say that English has been used in Japanese since WW2 and have loan words from other languages from even before.

    • @Badllamah
      @Badllamah Před rokem +14

      She has said that when working on the lyrics, and working with Saiki, sometimes the Japanese word(s) just don't work for either the sound or the note she wants her to hit. That is why the English words are sometimes a bit "scattered" around. That and what was posted earlier as well. I know I heard a lot of people singing Hunky-Dory Day on Sunday... LOL

    • @surfingasongwave
      @surfingasongwave Před rokem +11

      @@ROFLWAFFLELAWL4 Would it be correct to say, since the Meiji Restoration, many western norms have been adopted into the Japanese way of life: like suits and dresses instead of kimono and hakama, baseball, rock music, and so on. Which is interesting because I just went to an art exhibit of French Impressionist portraits and they often included Japanese ceramics and textiles in the backgrounds of their pictures "because it was fashionable to have Japanese items in your house" in the 1880s, and the French Impressionists really liked the Japanese sense of abstraction and simplicity in their arts and crafts.

The producers requested something chaotic, so Kanami offered five (if I recall) demos to the producers and they chose this one; the most chaotic of them all. As you said, the parts all fit together so tightly, but it is far more organized than it appears at first glance. It's a little like taking the back off of a Swiss watch.

    Re: "Dice" - one of my favorite Band-Maid songs and one of the reasons I decided they are definitely a cut above the typical band of *any* genre. You mentioned how they alter things when you'd typically just repeat what you'd already played - maybe they're just easily bored and keep mixing it up to stay interested, I dunno. Some musicians will ask "How do they remember all this" but in some strange way maybe it's easier to remember where you are in the song when *EVERY* phrase is different. MISA is one of my favorite bassists ever, and compares favorable to anybody else. It's not so much that she's technically overwhelming but like you said, it's more like "I'd never have thought of that." But once you've heard it, you can't think of a better way of playing it.

These were selected for J-LOD (which was a government program to bolster businesses that depend on in-person attendance during Covid). They needed a live performance longer than five minutes, so they put these two songs from their May 10th live stream. Other people touched on this but yeah, English loan words are common in Japan and end up in music a lot. We use a lot of loan words in English, too, we're used to it so it doesn't stand out to us. Sublime worked a lot of Spanish into their lyrics, for example, and tons of words we use all the time are actually French, stuff like that. So it's not that surprising when you think about it, we're just seeing it in a different context.

    From my memory, they wanted the songs to be catchy and likable by all. That’s why they use English parts, there’s usually more than 2 words but the accent and speed of the songs make it hard to tell. It’s also a note that English is trendy in Japan, they wear clothing with English on it (sometimes not even knowing what it means) because it’s just trendy. So that could have something to do with it as well.

    I THOUGHT OF A GOOD ONE. Made in Abyss - Hanezeve Caradhina. Literally the entire OST for Made in Abyss is a masterpiece but this one is just gorgeous. Kevin Penkin is one of the most talented composers in the game. Dude won the anime award for best score in 2017 for this anime and another best score in 2020 for a different show. Oh yeah, and he has background composing for full orchestras.

    I'm really glad that you are going to see them. Make sure you try to meet Wave Potter (another musician and reactor), as he will be there as well. If you have the time of your life and want to see them again I still have a couple of extra tickets to the east coast shows (DC, Philly, NYC, Boston) 😜
    I'm always so psyched for your reactions, along with Champ, Wave, Ryan, and a few other musician reactors, it really helps me work through not just "that" I love these songs, but "why" I love these songs. Even though I have no musical talent or knowledge... I could listen to you guys geek out for days.

    Because of decades of Hollywood and pop music mainly being in English to a non-English speaker it sounds "Cool" to throw a word or two in between the lyrics.

    Shame you didnt do the MVs - i think they are a lot better than the lives for these 2 songs- mainly the balance is off- and they are a bit simplified. Difference especially suffers from the lead being too quiet- its a very hectic song and when the instruments are not all clear it muddies the song up.
    I like Dice a lot more than different.

    It's funny what you say at the end of the video about becoming a musician or starting playing an instrument. :D
    I have been a drummer for more than 20 years and been listening to Band-Maid for about 1 year now.
    I have bought a bass one month ago, because of Misa.
    Even if I have thinking about buying one for the last 15 years, she is the one who changed everything.

    i'll give it up to Different.. but only coz i gotta pick one. answer would probably be different on some other day. their songwriting has clearly progressed since DICE, but it's still an absolute banger.

    Their music even makes MISA emotional. She asks that the Masters & Princesses at the servings bear with her if it does. She no longer has her bangs to hide behind. As for the Click, BAND-MAIDs use of Backing Tracks is so smooth. They just lock in. Unless something is obvious you almost don't even notice them at all. Kanami records all the music befor she gives it to the others. Miku will decide the lyrics with some input from Saiki as to what's cool and what is uncool. Saiki is the abettor of cool. But Miku decides if a lyric should be in English or not. And English in Japanese songs is considered cool.

    Serious answer to the question about the inclusion of words in English; much like most people who know a little bit of a different language, English is regarded by a lot of people who don't speak it very fluently as "cool" - or, in this case, probably "rock". Rock is primarily an American thing, after all, so having a bit of English tossed in works on multiple levels; it's cool, it's more rock than "just" being in your own language, and if you ever tour outside your own country, it's something people in other countries might have an easier time latching onto to sing along with.
    All that aside, "Different" was also the opening song to a recent anime, which partially explains the slight difference in songwriting style as well as the inclusion of a little more English than usual; it's not uncommon for high-energy anime openings to have an extra sprinkling of English, for better or worse.

  • @mistermaky01
    @mistermaky01 Před rokem

    I think the English inputs are just because Japan thinks English is cool. It's like a lot of popular pop music as Spanish words or parts inn it. It adds some flavor, but it can be a little outputting if you speak the language that's inserted.

  • @paulread4886

    As a musician this shocked me. The complexity of bass and drums would get simplified by most western producers. Japan demands complexity, and giving the audience the same thing again in a verse is considered an insult to the listener. Band Maid sometimes even the choruses music will change each time. As for speed, some Japanese I spoke to when I was in Tokyo, bluntly referred to western rock as Sleeping Cow Music. hahaha. Checkout Freedom live for a hot drum solo. Tokyo is the new Seattle for hard rock .
