Roy may reply... but as he explained it to me, it's to take something that is working in your planting design (a particular plant pattern for example) and instead of changing things up for the sake of it, keep stretching out that same pattern for greater flow and visual impact.
it's easy to be too choppy in a design in an over enthusiastic mood to include lots of variety. smooth the design by reducing the variety and making each grouping larger and then stretching those groupings into more natural looking arrangements.
