Analyzing a 1-year-old garden with Roy Diblik

  • A year ago or thereabouts I planted up a part of the garden designed by Roy Diblik. We worked through the design process of this 15-by-30 foot space (or so) together in a series of videos and recently Roy came to analyze how it's looking and suggest a few changes to make.
This video is mostly just following Roy and I for a very natural conversation, so feel free to be a fly on the wall for this one.

Best lesson ever to have aggressive plants added after the nearby plants have a foothold. Wish I knew that before I put an anemone in. But lesson learned. I love that you can just keep learning more and more every year. Fun to listen to you sharing thoughts!

"Garden it up" - yes!! That is the right word for it, I always felt guilty that I was moving things around so much & adjusting, but now I will think of it as gardening it up! Also never knew that about echinacea purpurea! What a great conversation, I ate this up!

I think moving things around the garden is one of the most fun activities we can do as gardeners! Especially when a plant is languishing, moving it to a different spot for another chance before consigning it to the compost pile is often worthwhile.

I love the advice to stage your plantings in a flowerbed. Sometimes you just avoid plants that are invasive or aggressive but letting the other plants mature and grow out before you do it is a nice way to add in the ones you want.

I’d love to see you add some kind of seating where yall were standing. Do you have two bridges? I’d play off the bridges where the water gushes through… start with a ground cover that looks like water going from bridge to bridge and beyond. Add drifts of plants along that. Evergreen perennials are always my favorites. If you had a handrail on the bridges you could do vines too. Loving how lush it’s all getting!

I'm under the impression they are just showier or heartier and not necessarily good for pollinators, for example, than heirloom varieties so I tend to avoid hybrids, although I suppose it depends on the plant. What are the pros and cons of hybrids, and are there types of hybrids that are better than others?

I certainly hope you’re not judging a garden planted for four seasons on on glimpse when nothing is blooming one year after it’s planted. But even if you are, that’s OK. Not everyone loves every garden. The only person who needs to love the garden is the gardener.

I so want to grow those plants and many of the plants in this new garden. My plant addiction is going wild. I remind myself to buy more seeds. 🌿🌸🌻🪻
