    There are already lots of native things in my woodland, but it’s overwhelming and overrun with invasives because there isn’t a draw for anyone to go out there to take care of it. But the beauty and ease of maintenance of the plants you’ve already chosen- native or not- would be the catalyst for me to really want to spend more time out there. I can see how a strong planting like this could make it easier to crowd out the invasives. And the beauty and ease of care of the garden would give me incentive for better stewardship in the surrounding timber. I’m sure it will be beautiful as well as beneficial. Thanks for sharing.

    Beautiful. You have definitely increased my knowledge of plants. Stachys Hummelo and Carex Pennsylvanica I learned about from you and absolutely love these plants. In fact I was just editing my garden and added in 2 more Stachys Hummelo plus several more things. I agree learning about plants and a garden is never finished lots of editing and always a work in progress. It brings me joy and relieves my stress.

    Man, so much time and energy spent putting in cultivars and exotics. Only about 1 or 2 species that are actually native to the region (I’m assuming it’s in Wisconsin). Especially tough to see them planted within a natural woodland. Just seems wasteful to taunt wildlife with a good time only to provide plants that they can’t use. Looks like a well designed planting too.

    I really appreciate the plant lists. I have had a hard time getting muhlenbergia established. I'm in Zone 7 the lower Hudson Valley NY. It's planted in a reasonable amount of well-drained soil near the top of a large rock outcropping in full sun. Bouteloua gracilis "Blonde Ambition" is thriving nearby. Any suggestions? Thank you again for all the inspiration -- I have definitely fallen for carex and appalachia, rosea and others are very happy in my wooded ravine and helping me to gradually eliminate the Japanese stilt grass. PS, I grew up in Mequon with a birch woods full of trilliums -- I didn't realize how lucky I was!

    This is why I prefer Allium cernuum. Not only is it native, and very attractive, but if it gets out.... it's a native and is supposed to be in the ecosystem. We've done so much damage to our ecosystem with introducing all these "thuggish" invasive plants. It really is amazing, and sad. My Nodding Onions look good and I don't mind a little browning of the leaves because that's a part of the natural cycle. I've got blooms right now, and they should continue for at least another month. Haven't tried eating them, yet.

  • @threeriversforge1997
    @threeriversforge1997 Před 20 dny

    Beautiful, as always. Finding natives that are economical is a real chore if they aren't popularized by someone like Roy, encouraging people to grow them for the trades. I found one nursery an hour away that has Carex pensylvanica, but they only have a few trays, and only 3.5" pots or gallons. Very pricey stuff, honestly, when you're buying that large, so you can't get many at a time and really fill in a space. I successfully divided one 3.5" pot into thirds, and it looks like they'll survive their first hot South Carolina summer in the ground. Dividing them is always a scary proposition since you never know how many won't make it.

    • @Erin-tk5jw
      @Erin-tk5jw Před 10 dny

      I’ve had pretty good luck with native plant sales around me (in WI). We have a few organizations that run them throughout the year. I can usually get 2-inch containers for $3-7 depending on the plant. I'm headed to one this morning to grab a few more Carex penn. :)

    • @threeriversforge1997
      @threeriversforge1997 Před 9 dny

      @@Erin-tk5jw I wish I was in that kind of area! I've been looking, but the only "local" nurseries are usually at least an hour away and only one carries C.pensylvanica. They don't grow their own, so there's no telling where the plants originated from. Still, the few I've bought from them appear to be doing well in the ground. I almost bought a gallon pot from them the last time I was there, but they wanted $25 for it, and I was leery about trying to divide it into smaller plantings.

  • @threeriversforge1997
    @threeriversforge1997 Před 28 dny

    It should be noted that Carex montana isn't actually from Montana. It's native to Europe, and while it's not listed as "invasive" in the States, I don't want folks to think it's a native plant because it shares a name with one of our great States.

    Deer do a lot of damage! I’ve experienced this for my first time this year. A small group of like seven have come into town and are running on city streets and in yards . They’ve chew all the tops of flowers off on agapanthus, roses, hydrangeas chewed to ground, buddleia flowers, etc. not to mention the deer scat all over the ground. I’ve put out deer repellent and found out somebody was giving them water in a big metal tub in my association complex. I’m on the park side of complex . Needless to say I feel your pain with the deer damage.
