- This video shows how to flash the Tasmota firmware to the Sonoff Basic device, how to configure it and control using MQTT and HTTP protocol. In this video I will not cover how to configure it in home automation systems, there is lot more in Tasmota, in this video, I am only covering the basics to get your started.

Sonoff wiring explained: drive.google.com/file/d/1fTCD...
Couldnt get my sonoff to connect to my wifi after couple of hour trying a just tried WPS method and it works first pop.
Good that you read the documentation. My router is hidden in a cupboard, so for me using the WPS is more difficult hence I did not mention that. Good find.
Csongor Varga
How do we send RfRaw command to so off bridge through NR?
This was one of the best and most informative videos to date on this subject. I was able to get a Sonoff Basic flashed and equipped with switch wires (I plan to use it as a wall switch by placing it in a wall box and making appropriate connections. Thanks very much for your excellent work!!
Bits of info so essential that are missing in other tutorials are all here... THANK YOU SIR!
You are welcome.
Having spent the last 8 hours tinkering with all of this, I can say that this video is the one you want to watch, it helped me far more than any other. Many thanks for uploading.
Thanks, I am glad that I have helped.
Great video Csongor, thank you very much for sharing! I'm just learning Node-Red and starting to play around with openHAB 2 to help automate my home. Looking forward to learning much more from your shared knowledge.
Really love your videos on easyesp and now Tasmota thinking of upgrading all 8 sonoffs to Tasmota you have help me very much
thankyou
Ran into Tasmota today. Very good video, really helps me! Proud Tasmota was created by a Dutch guy! Thanks Csongor!
I too have watched at least 4 other videos and this was the only one that allowed mo to control the sonoff from my browser. Thank you so much. This is a true service
Thanks, Csongor Varga, this is the easiest method I have seen in updating the Sonoff firmware to Tasmota.
+Dush Patel Yes, I like it too. This requires the least amount of programs to install.
Very good and very in-depth video! Thanks for helping me choose this firmware!
great description video... look forward to receive my hardware and get into that
Hi - another great video
Thanks to your explanation I've managed to flash Tasmota onto a Sonoff Basic and a sets of S20s.
Best video of SonOff and Tasmota ! Been struggling to get my SonOffs to Work for quite a few hours - trying with Arduino software and the normal ESP EASY flash guide and image. Nothing worked on my Sonoff Basic TH v1.1 2017-5-5.
This video helped and worked!
Thank you so much :)
You are welcome. Glad that I was able to provide some help.
Very comprehensive one, thanks
Very useful, thanks for sharing.
Best Sonoff MQTT Node Red contents with detail instructions.
Thanks man!
Great video! Thanks a lot. I have considered abandoning ESPEasy to try Tasmota, but after this review I got even more sure that version 2.0 of ESPEasy is more powerful and will stay with it. You may want to test it yourself. Btw when you mask your ap ssid watch out for the logs window, as it appears there as well, here unmasked :)
Yes, I have not tried 2.0 yet. That is probably something I should do in the near future. Yes, I am not doing a perfect job masking out the ID, I think it is also visible in screen transitions, so I am only doing a half decent job.
super video thanks!!!
Brilliant video
Great video. I don’t know how old this video is, but Tasmota 5.12 is now available. The bin file however is the Spanish version which works fine but I could not get the English version to work. Also, I had great difficulty getting a WIFi connection to the Sonoff after flashing it. After you enter your network SSID and password, a DHCP IP address is assigned. That address can be found in the router but it seems that it disappears quite quickly. It was a real challenge for me to get connected.
These projects are getting updated quite frequently. To be honest, I am not a huge fan of all these controls being managed only via mqtt, but there must have been a reason for that. Use a mobile app called Fing. It is great for scanning networks and finding devices. Easier to use than the routers admin site.
do you know if its possible to send mqtt commands from ifttt so for instance if the outside weather from weather underground falls below certain temp i can get some lights flashing on my sonoff ?
hi. may i please ask you a question? i am still learning all this. so, this TASMOTA firmware flash is so i can use the sonoff with a switch, cell, alexa and google in any order to turn off and on a light for example? thank you kindly.
When I upload the latest firmware to my Sonoff, flashing with esptool was successful but after I added the main power I can not switch the Relay on and off by clicking on the button. Tried it with two sonoffs... same behavior. Any recommandation?
Thank youi for the video!! Really good!! one question: Is it possible to setup Tasmota to link it with you io.Adafruit account? how? thank you. Regards.
Obrigado
Have you used atom/PlatformIO or have you heard anything good or bad regarding atom/PlatformIO when flashing Tasmota to the sonoff basic?
if i just do the same with one brand new esp8266MOD stand alone it work?
If during the esptool flash you get the message:
opening bootloader
resetting board
trying to connect
flush start
setting serial port timeouts to 1 ms
setting serial port timeouts to 1000 ms
flush complete
espcomm_send_command: sending command header
espcomm_send_command: sending command payload
read 0, requested 1
trying to connect
Try swapping the TX and RX leads on the programmer.
Good video but I have a question:
configure a switch on GPIO14 and the switch works fine. Is it possible to read the switch via MQTT directly?
I tried this but it doesnt work: stat/sonoff4/switch2/#
You mean you connected a second relay to GPIO14? If you subscribe to stat/sonoff4/# you should see the status message when you operate the switch. If not, check the console which again should show all messages going in and out. I have not tested it, so this is my best guess based on my experience with Tasmota.
I cannot connect to the AP the sonoff doesn't give me IP address it is stuck on obtaining IP address..
have you noticed on the web interface on tasmota that the temperature and barometer display readings update in real time and are not set the same as teleperiod...? I wonder how they get that data...
That is good question. I only used Tasmota on a Basic, so I did not notice this. Maybe you need to send a status request message...
Hello Csongor, I like you videos and have the following question for you. E.g. I remember a video where you tried to figure out using NodeRed what cause the instability of the SonOff(s). Now you have experience with ESPeasy, ESPurna and Tasmota. Which off these alternative firmware(s) is , from your experience most stable to work with on a SonOff. THX
Interestingly, I think they are the same. And I mean that all of them are pretty good and stable. Since that video I made some tweaking on the router, for example I change the Wifi channel from channel 1 to 6 and everything is much better now. I don't have those issues what I had in the past, and those devices are still running ESPEasy. Also my router got replaced by the ISP for a different reason. So I don't think that ESP Easy is any less stable than the other, and I have not even started playing with the new version 2.0. So check your wifi channels, switch to one which is less crowded (there are app that show what is on each channel). And if you are using MQTT use retain flag, so if your sonoff reboots for any reason, it will go back to the last state.
Fantastic Video: While looking at the LOG screen it looks like you are getting 2-3 log entries/minute. Sure that 300 does not equal 300 mil/seconds not 300 seconds.
I don’t want to appear stupid, but the jumper set for 3.3v on the ft232rl module should cover the middle pin and the pin directly below the lettering 3.3v, correct? The pin directly below the 5v lettering should be exposed/uncovered, correct. I just don’t want to ruin a sonoff
Thanks for advice and help
I have a model which does not have a jumper, but a separate 3.3V and 5V pin. So I don't know. I suggest to double check with a multimeter.
Thank you my friend. I'll try to re-flash it again. I tried a 2nd Sonoff, and it worked exactly as shown in your video.
I'm wondering if it reverted into original firmware due to the fact when I put the board back into the case, I believe the switch got depressed for a LONG period of time after power up. In the Wiki for button it states:
"Pressing the button for over forty seconds: Reset settings to defaults as defined in user_config.h and restarts the device"
No, once you flashed the firmware there is no going back. It is gone and replaced. So the button has nothing to do with it, the flash did not work. I can't really tell why. You see this is not rocket science, but can go wrong sometime.
Thanks again my friend. It refused to re-flash about 5 times then finally did but once I set it up via 192.168.4.1 to connect to my WiFi, I found it at 192.168.1.153 HOWEVER, the Chrome browser refused to connect to it.
So far this has worked perfectly for 3 sonoffs and failed on this one. It just may be defective. I have a bunch more to try so I'll just set this one aside and continue with the ones that work. Thanks again.
Hi very interesting tutorial thank you. I saw that there is a limited time pulse. Is there any way to tell the sonoff to open after 6 hours even when it is not connected to the Mqtt? I mean to make the sonoff responsible for the logic and not the node red server?
I don't you can do it with Tasmota. In the original firmware you can set up schedules. Time based triggers can also be set up in ESP Easy rules.
Thanks for the video! Can you make tutorials for other Sonoff models? I want to create a home automation system with climate control and power monitoring
I have a TH10, Touch, POW so it would be possible. I just need to find the time to do all this. Especially if I want to create all 3 firmware for all of them.
I suggest you to use an existing one, like ESPurna
does this work with sonoff basic v.1.6?
Hi Csongor
That's a great video, thanks a lot! May I ask you to share the content of the nodes "set msg.payload" and "wifi gauge"?
Thanks. The "set msg.payload" sets msg.payload to msg.payload.Wifi.RSSI and the wifi gauge is just using the default values. But you find the link to the code in the video description.
Can you change te ip adress of the sonoff device after being connected to your network? because i want o set specific ips so i can easiy differenciate sonoff devices from other devices thanks
Yes, it is on the page where you set the wifi. There is a field for static IP. Set the static IP (gateway, netmask and others) and after a reboot it will use the static IP.
Can the host name for mqtt be anything?
Hi, i want to add ws2812b led strips to my sonoff.. would you know what sort of current the 5v power supply is capable of providing to power a few leds they are 50ma each pixel...?
Yes, about 50-60ma. But that is on white with full brightness. You probably OK with just a few LEDs. But I am not even sure if Sonoff has 5V? ESP is 3.3 and maybe they are using a 3.3V relay. So you probably better off with Wemos D1 mini, and use a 2A USB power supply.
I have two ws2812b leds running well on sonoff basic connected to gpio 14, and the 5v rail... have been running for about 2 hours on full brighness white color theres loads of options for colours and patterns
Cool! So that is enough than. If you want a bigger RGB strip, there is a module called H801. That uses ESP8266 and can be re-programmed. I used ESP Easy on that. It can control RGBWW led and 4A per channel. No as versatile as a ws2812b, but works great as a big mood light.
yeah i only needed 2 ws2812b for the moment i have attached them to the front of the sonoff and heat shrunk them in clear heat shrink just for testing... the plan is to use them as well as the relay to provide a basic alarm indicator for my garage so i will mount the leds outside my garage and i can also control my garage lights remotely all in one device...... are you on facebook to message or how is best to instant message you ? thanks AL...
Do you still feel esptool is the easiest way to flash a sonoff basic with Tasmota? Or is there something else you can recommend?
Thanks in advance for your help
I think it is the easiest for a beginner. The only reason I am saying this because you don't need to install any apps or environment. Just download the exe. Also I only know esptool and arduino, I have not spent time looking into Platform IO or anything else. So in that respect I am slightly biased (or ignorant :)
Hello, I have followed your video but in the end, my device doesn't work. I am able to still flashing device, but the result is the some. Tasmota doesn't work. Do you have any recomends for my?
I don't know. You can raise an issue on github and get assistance from the developers.
Another question-what’s version of python do you recommend 2.x or 3.x?
Sorry to keep bothering you
Thanks
I would go for the latest, but I am not using python for this project. I am using the esptool.exe so I don't have to compile it from the original python source.
Which is your preferred long term FW TASMOTA, ESPEASY, ESPurna or eWelink? I have MQTT broker.
Tasmota, ESP Easy, ESPurna they all do the job. If you a reflashing a Sonoff device, I like ESPurna, because it is simple and gets you going with minimal config. I also like ESPurna because of all the options and fine tuning. I am least fond of Tasmota, not that it has any particular issue.
Thank , subscribed and Liked , So Tasmota , ESPurna , or ESP Easy ???
OK, so I need to do a "which is the best" video on these three. I started with ESP Easy and even though that is the most complicated, I like that the most. Does not mean that it is necessarily the best.
Thanks , would be nice to have a video , comparing by simplicity , platform , automation , AI .. etc
Nice video, can you also flash the Sonoff 4CH pro?
Hello! I did not saw in your video how you setup your mqtt broker. You just show directly the node red thing. Can you explain to me how?
Just google "install mosquitto raspberry pi". I did it based on of the top results on Google
Csongor Varga thank you. More power in helping others.
Be aware that Sonoff is now shipping the R2 versions of this Sonoff Basic... the pin holes are now pre-filled with solder to prevent you from flashing the device and you will likely destroy multiple units before getting the procedure down right.... I have six Sonoffs in my walls and now regret taking this route - will be looking for another vendor who is not actively fighting their user community
There is a way to flash over the air. I did it with 3 units and it worked very well. See a video of DrZzs. czcams.com/video/ONFhXM5R-t4/video.html
Also easy to clear the filled holes with de-solder braid. Better than de-solder pump for this work.
I installed MQTT on hass.io as addon. What will be my MQTT server ip address. I do not have any other MQTT server setup? Thanks for your help in advance
Sorry, I am not sure. I did not even know that they also provide MQTT service. Home Assistant has a good community service ask around there.
Köszi a gyors valaszt
Hi Sir i have been folling you easyesp video for some time and just got going in Tasmota i have copied your flows and deleted the nodes i dont need, iand its working great switching on a light by manual. i would like to use Bigtimer with i had with easyesp but finding the change chllanging,my node now has toggle and relay state and uptime, please help where would put bigtime, between toggle relay and cmnd/Lights/power or stat/Lights/POWER and Relay state
thanks for your help and great video
In BigTimer, set the On payload to "on" the Off Payload to "off" and link it to the cmdn/Lights/POWER topic. It should work.
thankyou it works, now to upgrade 8 sonoffs from easyesp to tasmota
Hello, thx for great explanation and tutorial.
Im interesting if I flash this firware would be I still able to use Ewe-Link app on android OS and control my device with this firmware?
No, it is either or. And as far as I know there is no going back. So decide before you change the firmware.
Are u shure?
Yes, you should only re-flash the device if you want to move away from eWeLink. I don't know any method where you could keep eWeLink and also control it form a different source.
is there also a other way to control the Sonoff so not with node-red ?. Actially i want use URL to switch is on and off( that is working already) , but i cannot get the status feedback of the sonoff . could somebody help
I am not in front of my system, but can you try this? sonoff/cm?cmnd=Power0, this should return a status
i tried myIP/cm?cmnd=STATUS and i get a responce at chrome {"Status":{"Module":1,"FriendlyName":"Sonoff","Topic":"sonoff-basic1","ButtonTopic":"0","Power":0,"PowerOnState":3,"LedState":1,"SaveData":1,"SaveState":1,"ButtonRetain":0,"PowerRetain":0}}
but i do not know how to get this responce at domoticz
I am not a domoticz person. It can probably read json just not sure how. Try power0 or just power I think that return a simpe 0 or 1 as string. That could be easier for domoticz.
is it also possible to program the Sonoff dual with the ESP tool executable? but how will it establish Wifi AP
It is the same bin file. You set the device type as part of the configuration. Setting up the wifi is the same process.
i tried the same command on the dual R2, like i did on the basic, but i cannot get a AP
Have you tried using this method on a wemos d1 mini? If so how do you get to the configuration of the Wi-Fi?
I did not, but GPIO0 on the Wemos D1 Mini is D3. Just connect that to the group with a piece of wire.
Csongor Varga Thank you. I will try that and let you know!
Made initial 192.168.4.1 connection, added SSID/PW then rebooted. Now, cannot locate it on the network. Pressed the button 4 times and I now see a new network of ITEAD-100000121f9 {not sonoffxxxx like on the first time} and when I try to log into it, it asks for the INTERNET Security Key
Tried to re-flash with the same result.
I am sorry, but if you are seeing an ITEAD-xxxxx access point it means that your device is still running the original itead firmware. Something has gone wrong during flashing the Tasmora firmware.
My Sonoff has ESP 8285 instead of ESP 8266 are compatible?
Yes, 8285 is same the 8266 with the flash chip integrated within. Works the same way.
Does this tutorial also work with the new version of basic?
I don't have a newer version, so I could not check. I read that the parameters for flashing the firmware is different as the newer version only support DIO mode. This is all I know, I rather not comment anything as I have not tested it myself.
Platform may be easier I have used it in the past so use whatever you feel best
If we hack sonoff basic and upload Tasmota flash firmware then Can we use continue ewelink app? Or itead servers dont let us to use ewelink app with sonoff hacking firmware! If YES Which app can we use ?
Once you flash the Sonoff, it will no longer work in eWeLink. And there is no way back. Tasmota will not work with any app. Tasmota will allow your Sonoff to work with other home automation systems like Domoticz, OpenHAB, or Home Assistant to just name a few. Those will have an app.
Köszi a sok jo videokat. Sonoff-nak van TIMER funkcioja az originalt App-ban. Létezik ilyen funkcio a Tasmota firmware-ban?
Attol függ mit jelent neked a Timer.
Köszi a gyors választ. Igen az utobbira gondoltam. A PulsTime-t sikerült megoldani pulz bekapcsolásra a garazs kapuhoz.
Hogyan használod A Wemosos eszközöket? Mivel vezérled, hogyan nézed a DHT22 adataid?
Szóval a Wemo appból tudnád irányítani őket.
HI, i am having problems with tasmota firmware being able to receive the value of a bmp180 sensor attached to my sonoff, BMP180 is connected up and works i can see the temperature, baro pressure on the webinterface with no problem and updating in realtime, I want to be able to view this data on my android device and have installed mqtt dashboard, this gives me buttons where i can turn on and off lights alter led colors etc these work great, i am using a cloudmqtt server... the only thing i cant seem to get right is be able to display the temperature on mqtt dashboard android i have parsed the json sring and got a value but no way will mqtt display the temperature surely it cant be this hard to get temperature on my android phone...? I also have a device which is posting data in JSON to a topic. So in MQTT dashboard I put the topic into the topic field and in the field below I put $.pool to get the pool attribute from the JSON. That works for me. I hope this is what you were asking for.
so is this in the screen on mqtt dash that show the buton colours and on off state ? i wonder if we are running the same mqtt dash, as there are two...

hello sir when i reflash sonoff basic i lost bluetooh config . how i reconfig bluetooth ?
Sonoff basic has no bluetooth. So I am not sure what you are missing.
@@csongorvarga thank you for replay basically i want to control relays with out internet through Bluetooth in tasmota so please let me know from where i can study these commands to do this thank you
Kedves Csongor
most ismerkedek próbálkoznék néhány kis "project " megvalósításában, amelyhez sonoff basic modult használnék fel.
Tasmota firmware flashelése megtörtént sikeresen :) a sonoff basic-re.
sokat segített a videó :Ö
where are the bin files?
Szia Csongor.

Hello can this video be followed for the sonoff POW as well
Hi I have loaded it onto a POW
How did you get it to give the power consumption details.
Change device to POW in tasmota and it displays it all
I just tried to flash it with ESPTOOL and for some reason it is not not working when i press the button 4 times no lights but when i power it on the blue light just comes and then goes off . The code upload was sucessful. But i have just got it connected with the line and neutral for the test. does that matter?
I have not used esptool so I don’t know how it works sorry
Hello, at first thanks for the video!. I need your help. You can not imagen how many tutorials, programs (Espurna, Atom, Arduino, etc...). I fallow precise every things the tutorials told me to do and begin flashing but at the end "ERRORS" and I can't understand why?!!?. The problem is what to do to repair them. With your excellent video I could finished COMPLETELY (wauu) without errors!. Well, after following your instructions, I connected Sonoff to the power (AC), click 4 time the botton and with my tablet found Sonoff-0684 in my wifi. BUT, you know what, its can not connect to the internet!!!!. I can se the Sonoff module when I click on it, I save it but its not connected with the internet and its not going to restart. Have you experience somthing like that?. Can you help me?. You know, its time to start publish videos with the common errors you get when flashing and the way to solve them. You guys, make a great job to share your knowledge!
Well, the thing is that I don't have much ideas on the top of my head. To be honest, when I recorded the video, it was my second try and did not have any issues. Therefore I do not have much experience solving them. You did enter your wifi SSID and password on the admin page right (and saved the settings)? Sonoff chips only support 2.4GHz wifi bandwidth. If your router is set to use 5Ghz only, Sonoff will not connect. Also keep in mind Sonoff has much weaker antenna than e.g. your phone or laptop. If those devices showing low wifi signal, Sonoff may not even be able to connect. Tasmota also communicates on serial port with baud 115200. With the AC power removed you can power it up via the FTDI adapter and check the serial messages in something like putty or the Serial Monitor in Arduino IDE. I have never done this, but there might be some messages there that will help you understand what is going wrong.
Thanks a lot for the answer. In fact, I know that Sonoff support only 2,4 GHz. I have strong signal in my tablet and I have been very close to my router when I tried to get the internet connection. I'm going to try what you recommend. Thanks anyway!
can i use arduino uno r3 ???
To do what? I don't think so.
Csongor Varga because i not have Qunqi 3.3V 5.5V FT232RL FTDI Usb to TTL Serial Adapter Module for Arduino Mini Port
I don't think it can be used.
