The advertising piece with all the ink markings is what's known as blotting paper, used in the days of dip pens and fountain pens. Due to the nature of these pens, ink needed to stay liquid for a long time to avoid clogging the nib. The downside of course to that was that it also took a long time to dry on paper, which is a problem if you're writing on multiple sheets or on both sides of one sheet. After writing your manifesto in your finest Spencerian or Palmer script, you would carefully lay your blotter paper over the wet ink to draw up the excess.
Ha!, I came in here to say that was a blotter. Glad you beat me to it…. 4 days ago LOL. Businesses used to hand out blotters like candy.
"Pin-up photos of Hall and Brown machines"
🤣🤣🤣🤣 That cracked me up! Only you, Kaleb, would contemplate pictures of machinery and think of them as pin-up photos! Proof of how much you love your H&B! ❤
T-shirt:
"I Came, I Saw, I Built" on a print of an old Hall & Brown saw machine.
WOW, that Shower is gonna be SOMETHING when it's ALL DONE!!!! And I CAN'T WAIT to see the exterior when it's ALL PUT TOGETHER!!!! Thanks Kaleb for bringing us along on your Journey!!!!
Whenever I see that tile work floor I always think of Kim so it was very nice seeing her in this vid. I missed her and her videos!
Interesting and pleasing to see that H&B survived the great depression!
Never thought I would be so excited to see a shower!!
But I am totally excited to see the vintage shower you have!!!!!!
Nice to see Kim again!
I love how u have saved the original floor in the basement.
That shower is sooo cool...Heck, it's a luxury to have that in today's time! Can't wait to see it completed. Absolutely amazing work!
Caleb you take as much time as you need on your projects. You are teaching us patience which society lacks. Hi Kim!!!!
Librarian here, just a little bit of information on you wanting to use the printed materials for other purposes. Be sure it is in public domain (for the least amount of headaches in regards to copyright law). Currently -and for the most part-, anything printed prior to 1927 is in the public domain (only regarding US law), and on January 1, 2024, things printed in 1928 enter the public domain. Just be aware that if it is an active trademark, you will need permission to use it, even if it is older that 95 years old. Just do your due diligence in researching the age of the original sources, and if any of that is currently under any trademarks.
The photos might have been carried in a salesman’s travel case
You're probably right. To me, they look like photos the company would send to newspaper and magazine publishers for reproduction in advertisements. As the backgrounds are already cut out, the product didn't need any cropping and could be easily reproduced and placed closely against the ad copy/text. Ad space was (and still is) a major expense and they wasted as little as possible.
This brings back so many memories of work on our 1884 Victorian. It is great to see you doing this.
Yes! I have been in a needle shower! My grandparents had one, though different from yours. It was taller, and more circular in shape with more bars where the water sprayed out head to foot. The chrome had worn off so my grandfather took the whole shebang out and took it to an auto repair shop for re-chroming. It looked like new!
Your studs are wonky because the wood hasn't dried out completely. Maybe it would be better if you used metal studs in this instance? I know metal studs are a 20th century invention, but in this case it might be better? They would be behind the tile, so no one would know. Except your viewers, lol. Love your project.
How fascinating seeing those brochures. I absolutely loves the font on “Accuracy counts”.
Great to see Kim modelling in the fabulous shower. What a difference that’s going to make to your lives when it’s finished. This was such a great video. Thank you
Those cloth backed photos with page numbers on them look to be originals for a brochure or catalog.
Love the idea of tshirts! Eventually, maybe you could could digitize them and write a book - or maybe team up with your friends and write a book about historical woodworking techniques? Help preserve them for a new generation. I passed a bunch of boring new steel and glass and cement buildings today and it made me a bit sad. How nice to come back and see this wonderful video! Also, yay needle shower!
Modern architecture is so depressing. “Look I put a glass box on top of a different size glass box!”
What about a HB collector card series? Make them look like old tobacco/baseball cards. Sell packs, have special edition cards of of the house, family, tombstone, machinery etc…..
I could see mugs and stationary with those desgnes for the Museum shop😀
Claire did an excellent job! Its coming along nicely :))
I think so too!
The pamphlets are nice for the history of advertising
The glossy photo mounted on fabric might be for the retoucher to enhance before it goes to print. We (retouchers) use to paint directly on a image to create better contrast. After we were done a new photo or printing plate would be made from that. It was especially needed for items that were to be printed on low quality paper such as newsprint.
Brilliant! Another wonderfully intellectually fascinating episode thank you.
The major problem with a needle shower 14:40 is that the calcium in the hard water would quickly plug the tiny holes and the water would dribble instead of needle spray. The solution was to use a darning needle and poke out the calcium in each hole, a very tedious job which needed to be repeated every couple weeks. Needless to say, they fell out of favor almost as quickly as they were introduced. IDK but maybe using soft water would help instead.
We have hard water. I use a daily shower spray on the shower head daily. It helps keep the build up down.
"Need-less to say".. kinda funny 😅
A water softener could help !
Caleb, the work that you all are doing is AMAZING!!! The " ol girl" is going to be the bell of the ball and look absolutely FABULOUS!!!🎉🥇
I actually stayed in an historic mansion that had this needle shower in the bathroom. It really worked! As I recall it had solid walls of grayish marble on 3 sides and a shower base on the bottom which was shaped marble. I remember turning on the needle part and it was a bit too “Needlely” for me. I adjusted the opening handle and it was a more pleasant pressure. Probably a matter of taste. Good luck!
Caleb, do you have nightmares with green paint or not yet? 🤣
Amazing video as always 😍
Not yet!
So excited for you and Kim to finally get a shower in there. Tshirts are always a good idea!!
Great job Kaleb. Love that needle shower so much! Yay Kim for scale. ❤ Cute as always!!
An idea. A shirt with front and back or a frame-able poster. 1: I'm the before. (With a drawing of the house all broken down.) 2: I'm the after. (With a drawing of the house all perfectly perfect.)
This is how I look at the old culinary, pastry and baking equipment of British bakeries & canteens and fall into delight.😋🤪🤩😍🤩
I appreciate you! ... and so will your wife. Good Job on the shower! :)
I love updates on the roof, I have never said this before but it's stunning 😍 as is anything you two are working on 😍
Thanks so much! 😊
You could frame the machine ads and hang around the house or the future shop. Your eBay find is so cool as is all the work this week. ❤
🎉Hi I am watching your video, the blue pamphlet with the plane flying over the ocean. I do believe that the plane is a picture of the Spirit of St. LOUIS. I really like your show. Mike
Could be
That's cool how you get stuff from long ago and it makes you happy 👍
Here in The Great Industrial Northeast, if I want truly not warped 2" x4"'s, then I don't go to Blowes or Homer Depot. I go to the locally owned and operated lumber yard, Curtis Lumber.
They saw their own lumber direct from the Adirondack mountains and have just as good selection of hardware, tools and custom cabinetry as the big box stores.
Those scrolls turned out awesome! I can't wait to see them on the house! That needle shower is going to be epic too!
How awesome to find all those Hall & Brown papers! The back of that postcard was used as a blotter to blot the wet ink after writing so you didn't have to wait for it to dry. I use a blotter when writing with my fountain pin.
I've been curious about that needle shower since you first showed it. You'll have to give us a review of the needle feature once it's installed.
Yes,since it didn’t stand the test of time.😟
The one with the airplane would be very cool. As well as the eagle. Glad that you are finally able to work on the shower. Also good to see a Kim scale. Hope to see more of her as well.
It’s so heartwarming to see your excitement about history and the work ahead of you. ❤ keep up the great work. MERRY CHRISTMAS 🎄
Caleb, I can actually feel how you feel about those wonderful pamphlets you found on EBay. I would feel the same way. I bet your little heart skipped a beat when you saw them for the first time. Congratulations on those great finds.
I’m loving the shower. I’m so excited when you get to really starting on it. Using subway tile is gonna look awesome n matching the floor the best than you can. My only suggestion is ( if care to know) I still put a sink in. If you or Kim are outside n need to clean up, wash hands whatever it’s better to go in the basement than going through the house n dragging dirt with ya. It’s just a thought. Then again you may have a better idea at cleaning up.
Again so happy about your great finds. I’d frame a couple of them. They awesome!
♥️♥️😊👍👍🌟👍🎄
He showed where it was originally plumbed for a toilet and sink and that he will replace them to have a three piece washroom but said those two pieces won’t be a priority right now since he has them upstairs.
We also have a slop sink next to the washing machine one room over.
@@The2ndEmpireStrikesBack
Then I guess your all set ♥️😊👍
I experienced pins and needles seeing that wonderful old shower! Who said old plumbing isn't exciting?! Oh,...and those glossy pictures of iron woodworking machines; Mmmmmmm. Very s...e....x.....y.😊
John in Bethel, Missouri.
I'm especially happy you're getting a shower on site. You've come a long way from when you only had one light in the house on an extension cord!
Awesome video. I have a feeling that shower is going to feel DIVINE. Haha from the description of how it works, it seems so calming and therapeutic. Can't wait to see it complete! Also great seeing Kim this week. 😊
I think that a T-shirt with the Hall and Brown logo would be very interesting! 😊
Hi to Kim! So nice to see her looking as pretty as ever! 🩷
After a 45 year career in a machine shop building machinery. I too get a big kick out of those photos!
I used one of those showers and it was AMAZING. I called it a "womb shower" because it felt like I was back in the womb.
Love the shower! I’ve used something similar and it was definitely worth waiting for. Makes you tingle all over. Lovely! My only warning would be to Kim, don’t use when you’re pregnant or nursing as it’s really painful on your ‘baby feeding apparatus’, if you get my drift. OUCH! That’s from experience! Can’t wait to hear your experience of it Caleb. What you’re doing to this beauty of a house is bound to take time, it can’t be rushed. She’s a gem. Also you’ll enjoy looking back at what you’ve achieved over the years. Enjoy the moment. X
get a vent fan in there to keep that moist humid air from ruining everything
Love the antique 🚿 😅
That shower will be really cool. Nice to see Kim. My favorite of the brochures is the art deco looking one, because it shows Hall and Brown was able to move forward.
So so looking good, Hi Kim and thank you (wonderful adventure).
DUDE!!!!!! Brochure #3 ......... The Spirit of St. Luis!!!! 😉😉😉
Hello Caleb... The Mouldings pieces are so pretty. Looking forward to seeing them up. Also, the Needle Shower. That's going to be great. Your Ebay Haul is awesome. Such good condition. See you soon. Hugs to Kim as well. ❤
Happy to see Kim again!
I think it's good you built the walls away from the original stone so the stone walls can breath and mildew and mold don't grow on them.
Nice archive of HB material! There are acid free folders and interleaving papers you can use to store and preserve them.
I was wondering what kind of enclosure you were thinking for the needle shower. I've seen a few vintage images of your particular configuration with just solid marble walls or similar. So it will be interesting to see how it looks in a fully tiled surround. I'm sure it will look great, whatever you end up doing.
Just beautiful Kaleb and kim. It will be gorgeous. I love you two. Be safe❤
We really enjoyed this video, Kaleb. One of the best! What a great eBay find and can't wait to see the needle shower when you're done
They used the card back as a blotter for a fountain pen. Probably for addressing other correspondence.
Love it!! Enjoy 2024 all the best for you and Kim ❤❤❤
Hi Kim, good to see you again. Those pamphlets and pictures are in superb condition. Wonderful that you found them. Stay safe.
Everything is coming along great! I can't wait to see what you do with the shower floor tiles. I agree that facing the shower entrance the other way was best. Don't want to step out of the shower right in front of a door to the outside. The day all of the roof pieces and trim are up, with be a super day indeed!
I am so here for all your sentimental nerdiness! 🎉❤🎉❤🎉 I love the graphics, too!
The pictures of the machinery and advertising pamphlets are very, very interesting Kaleb. I love history too.
Perhaps the machinery doesn't exist anymore because of company failures and scrapping out metal for WWI? Of course the depression didn't help companies either as you stated. Old machinery that lasted through all of that again may have then been scrapped for WWII. Metal drives in communities nation wide for building airplanes, bombs, artillery and gun casings for the war effort. Any metal that could be melted down. If there was a closed down factory with old, obsolete machinery in it, I bet it was taken and melted down for WWII. Newer faster machines were probably put in their place to run on electricity and to make production faster also. Just my thinking.
The needle shower will be amazing to see completed with water running through it. You'll have to model it in a 1920's style men's swim suit! Oh my! The bees knees! LOL!
The eagle and cog logo would definitely make great t-shirts!
I used one in a spa that was over 100 years old. That one was circular with several rows. It was interesting, I would say it is more stimulating. It didn’t hurt, but wasn’t soft like today’s showers.
Since the documents are unique, you should take high resolution scans and publish them online for digital posterity. That way they’ll never be lost.
I am so UNGODLY jealous of your ribcage shower! I’ve coveted one for so long!
Be cool to see the needle shower up and going. Never seen one in action before. Love the old advertising pieces you found. Amazing they survived. Would love to see them made into shirt designs.
I have been watching your channel for a while and love everything you have been doing. I will make my dad watch some of the videos. He was born in Kansas City, MO and the house that he grew up in is gone now. I am so glad you are saving yours. Your love and excitement of history is infectious. I just wanted to mention if no one else has yet that if those pamphlets are from the '20's, the most important aerial advancement in the '20's was Lindberg's solo flight across the Atlantic. I believe that may be a picture of his plane, "The Spirit of St. Louis". Perfect for your home in St. Louis.
You nailed it, thats absolutely The Spirit of St. Louis. The first thing I thought when I saw that brochure was 'oh that clever for a St. Louis company.'
Exciting ebay find! the 8×10 glosses need to be in glass front & back frames ❤
Hi Kim 👋
That shower sounds so good!!
Are you going to reuse the tile from the old bathroom upstairs that Kim saved?
The house is looking so good. I admire seeing all of your pain staking work you have been doing. I met some one from your area and I told her about your beautiful old lady. She plans on checking out your hose. I have missed seeing Kim helping you. I hope your beautiful bride is doing well.
You and Kim have a lovely Xmas and a fantastic new year from Australia 🇦🇺
I learned about needle showers by touring the Glensheen mansion in Duluth, MN!
Don't forget to add the wood support to the shower frame in the places where the needle shower framework connects to the wall. It will be sweet.
Its so cool!! Love the shower!! Can't wait to see it work!! Keep working on it, soon you will have a shower. Yes I have used Lowes and home depot lumber. Its all off. Have a great week!
You are so fortunate to have found an original needle shower. My house has a large 1910’s original bathroom that still contains the rare original tiled shower enclosure with porcelain pan, nickel plated soap dish and shower curtain bar, but alas the needle shower itself was ripped out by a prior owner and replaced with a modern shower head. The only indicators of the original shower are the various filled- in mounting holes along the three walls. Still wishing one day an original can be found or reproduced. The rest of the bathroom is all original - floor to ceiling wall subway tiles, unglazed porcelain mosaic floor, mahogany door, original sink, tub and toilet, stained glass window, original silver plated light sconces, and nickel soap and toothbrush dishes. Just missing that shower, let me know if you or your fans ever find another!
Hi Caleb! Question: Do you work with the local authorities to get this house marked as historic property in order to protect it from being changed in the future? This is very common in Europe to make sure that historic buildings do not get knocked down by greedy people.
I love watching you restore your house. You are so dedicated.
Definitely, a neat-Ol 'shower.
That eagle logo is awesome. I would love to have that on a shirt.
Wow! That was quite a cool haul you got from eBay. Love seeing the progress and I appreciate you taking us along😊
Love your passion ❤ enjoy following your journey
Was Mr. Brown a Mason? Because the sunbursts inside peak of the dormers look like the all seeing eye with the rays coming down. Just curious. Also the intricacy of the drawings in the pamphlets is amazing! Better than the photographs! What a find!
yes he was a mason.
Great score! 🎉
Hall and Brown logo on the front and The 2nd Empire logo on the back!
Shower deluxe…
The Winchester house has a shower like this too.
Pretty sure this is the same as what my parents had in an apratment from the 20's. Their knob was labeled "jets" it was 6 side mounted shower heads, mounted 3 vertical on the 2 opposite sides. they too had extra tiny holes for the water. Its a nice feature! It feels ticklish to abrasive, depends on the pressure.
It's truly a work of art not a house
Do you leave the pipes exposed in a needle shower? I'm trying to picture how one would tile in a way that would hide the pipes and ensure the water stayed in the shower and not behind the wall. I'm guessing you need some serious water pressure and mineral-free water to keep those tiny holes from getting clogged! I can't wait to see how it looks and works!
Yes,the pipe would be exposed,at the top of the “horseshoe”,there was a round plate to attach it to the wall.
Yay Kim for scale.
Omg the eagle in the cog would be a sick tattoo
Good to see you Kim.
You guys are the busiest bee ❤
Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon is where I saw my first my first needle shower. It was so amazing.
Yay a Kim cameo !! Cant wait to see the needle shower operational 🚿🛁
Is the needle shower made of cast iron pipes? If so is there corrosion inside or mineral deposits that you might be able to somehow internally scrape out with a kind of snake before you permanently install it? Maybe install a normal modern shower also while installing in case if not too intrusive/ugly? Love that you found this old plumbing gem!
