    "That's fun. We're having fun! We're learning things! We're learning things on kayaks with lasers!"
    It's got to be said - Destin's enthusiasm and joy at figuring out, testing and playing with the world and all the amazing things in it is truly infectious.
    The sheer _delight,_ almost *_bursting_* out of him as he watches a laser reflect off the surface of some water, or illuminating the little globe as it hit the meniscus, can pry and dig its way through the prickliest bad mood and soon enough, you're entranced as well.
    I know exactly what's happening - I remember all of this stuff from High School Physics and saw much drier versions of these demonstrations back then. Seeing it performed by a guy who's exploding with happiness that he gets to see this stuff, and overjoyed that he gets to share it with other people makes the whole exercise a *_LOT_* more fun however.

      @ipbatinic Před 4 lety +16

      However,. You'll soon realize it's only going to transmit one big fat pixel of completely scrambled rays of the image at the light pipe objective end.
      I know you know about fiber bundles. You get fiber pixels, each fed from an image ray, but still scrambled, only less scrambled. Each pixel is correctly lit and colored. But translates to the wrong spot.
      So that bundle has to be built with the bundled fibers in perfect alignment. But then it won't flex.
      So you can fuse just the ends of the bundles then cut and polish them, and insert the thing into a protective flexible hose.
      Interestingly, because of the physical characteristics of molten glass, if you pulled a softened bundle, you would keep the pixel organization, but get higher resolution, since the bundle gets thinner. But it's also stretching longer, so you can cut it into multiple bundles an regain the original objective surface area. (with some loss due to cutting and polishing ends again).
      I've wanted to try to create a fiber coupled high resolution digital imager by printing a space transformer to align bundles in this jig, such that the imager end of an optical camera front end can be paved with an array of bundles, but the output end of each bundle illuminates the for of its own imaging CCD device. It would have to be an assembly that mounts onto a PCB with an array of CCD imaging devices, probably in contact with the die, otherwise it would be out of focus.
      Alternatively using a lens to focus the bundle image on each die.
      A hack to get a 16 8Mpix imagers looking at a piece of one image, for drone recon, or an astro-cam for a telescope.

    I would love to know the details behind that interference pattern you got when shining the laser through the acrylic block.
    IDEA: could you build a visual analog to antenna tuning using lasers and acrylic? I know it’s not exactly the same, but the end result is similar (EM waves) and maybe there’s a way such an analog could translate into better understanding of the dark art of antenna design.
    ALSO another idea: I wonder if the light pipe analog can translate into an analysis of acoustic waves traveling through water pipes?

    Destin does an excellent job showing how the principles of fiber optics work in an intuitive way. Some of the earliest experiments that led to what we know as fiber optics today began by observing how light was contained in the streams of illuminated water fountains in the late 1800s. As for transmitting an image using fiber optics, the technology has actually been around since the 1950s. They are called "image guides" are used in the medical industry (endoscopes), the military, and some other industrial applications.

    I have been involved with selling infrared based fiberoptic sensors from as far back as the early 80s. The infrared was at the invisible wavelength frequency, but if you turned on a camcorder you could see it. Pretty amazing laws of physics that are displayed regarding light, attenuation of that light when it comes to different mediums that you shine the light through such as dust, water, glass, and on and on. We then made UV sensors with fiberoptics attached. The inexpensive versions are acrylic, but true glass was the way to go.
