in all honesty, i think this movie's story probably was some dude's fever dream. he was probably somehow given this movie to make and had known absolutely NOTHING about it other than some character names

Ok. Now I get it. All it took was the rise of dimensions, timelines, variants, alter net universes, and time travel for me to finally get this damn movie. 10/10 Ahead of its time.

I don't care about the negative critics. I liked it when i was 10 and now i'm 36 and still like it. Back then i liked it mainly because i was a big Mario Fan, today mainly of nostalgia and i'm still a mario fan.

I’m hitting 32 in June, and I still love it since I was 6 back in 1996 when I saw it got the first time ever.
I just turned 32 April 1 and I don’t care what anyone says, I love this movie. I have a soft spot for it because I loved it as an 11-year-old kid. Back then, I was obsessed with Mario games, so anything having to do with Mario I automatically loved, including this movie. To this day, I still think it’s a really entertaining, fun and hilarious movie. Yes, as an adaptation of the games, it’s terrible, but as a stand-alone action/comedy film, it’s really good.

So I just watched the movie for the first time and I'm going to be honest, from my perspective, its not that bad of a film. Sure, it has almost nothing to do with the Super Mario Bros games, but for what its worth, if this was called something else, I'd say it's a pretty good movie in its own right, even though it doesn't really make much sense in terms of the video games. I'd say that despite being a 'bad' movie, its heart is in the right place, and the creativity of the world and the characters shows throughout the film in its own original way, despite being very 90's. To me, it was ok.
These fall into 80/90s cult classics much like the dark crystal, who framed Roger rabbit, cool world, pet cemetery and the like. Gritty for today's standards but still charming in their own way.

Don't care what anyone says this movie rules. This was made at the height of real sets, props, animatronics, etc. Love the look of the almost cyberpunk world.

I remember watching this as a kid. I was disappointed that I didn't see the actual Bowser. Nonetheless I enjoyed it.
Yeah we got a glimpse of a bowser near the end before he turned into slime i mean its all we had ;)
Yeah it’s definitely not good, but they didn’t have the technology to green screen like they do today.
Well Dennis Hopper was ment to be bowser and he was a great antagonist for what he was provided with tho is in fact not bowser.

It was fun, it was nostalgic, and even now I have nothing against it. They weren't adapting God of War or Assassin's Creed plot-point-for-plot-point, it was a red plumber and a green plumber murdering mutants and turtles. This movie was awesome!

this is the best relaying of the origin of the mario bros! i was lucky enough to see it in theaters as a kid. and anyone that argues about the canon in comparison to the games is uninformed or not a true fan of super mario!!

Loved this movie. I wish more video game movies took cutting edge tech in our day and interpreted a game to a cinematic story. I read that the Yoshi animatronic was the most advanced and expensive animatronic for it’s day. Looked scarier that Jurassic park Dino’s, just give it dramatic lighting. If you watch fan made super Mario vids on you tube you will see they come no where near this amazing cyberpunk alternate universe story line.
This movie made it official that their last name is Mario.

It fails as an adaptation of the video game, but I would be lying saying that it's a bad movie. It has some redeeming qualities such as the art direction for koopas world and the fact that the three top actors of that time actually got together. That and the movie itself is pretty entertaining in its campiness and nostalgia factor.

I think the greatest achievement this film made was it was the first video game turned to movie
I try to forget it's existence every single day of my life. It deserves to be forgotten. It failed the one thing it was supposed to do. Which is to look and be a Mario movie. The new movie so far actually looks like the games. It helps that its animated.

I so wish they cast Danny DeVito as Mario instead of Bob Hoskins. Because Bob Hoskins originally has a British accent and Danny DeVito originally has a New York accent. So Danny DeVito would have been the perfect actor to play Mario.

This movie is to the Super Mario franchise what the Holiday Special was to Star Wars...
They should have just rereleased this movie instead of remaking it entirely. Done a little Star Wars special effects updating, but generally left it to brilliantly stand up for itself. Everyone in 93 who disliked this movie was an idiot and had hillbilly vision - they were unable to see how amazing and ahead of it's time the classic piece of cinema truly is.
