I remember being so excited to see this in theaters and remembering the confusion I had leaving the theater upon seeing it, it was a low-key a vital lesson in managing expectations
Very crazy.
it turns out its a pretty awesome movie once you learn about it and watch it some more, though
idk why it was allowed to be made but it was and i am thankful for that lol
Just watched Illumination’s Mario at theaters today… holy shit this is a day and night difference.
We all expected that
@RGkong also the "evolve/ de-evolve" thematic .... was this movie really about Super Mario or Pokemon ??? 😅😂
What a difference 30 years can make. 😅
@@RogueT-Rex8468 yep
...you had to watch the movie to realize that?
REALLY?
The goombas look like Killer Croc with a tiny head

I agree.
Correct
This Mario was good I just don’t like how goo bad are dinosaurs

Imagine if Goomba was actually that big in the game. Would be more harder to kill them

@@brettbaker1229. Actually the people behind max headroom made it, wich explains a lot!
Oh come on, guys. This movie has been out since 1993. And i don't hear anyone predict anything about new mario movie this year.
LMFAO
If you ignore the fact this is a Mario Brothers movie it actually makes an interesting story. Dennis Hopper would have been good as Bowser for the voice in the new movie. R.I.P. Dennis Hopper and Bob Hoskins.
Remember them.

This is because this scene was never officially released. The missing footage was found and inserted back into the scene, and because the source of the scene was a VHS, that was the best quality rip of the scene available, publicly at least

Those Goomba's are nightmare fuel
If this was mario but not based on the game and fixed just a bit, Then this would have been a hit. I still like that bob hoskins was in it and he makes a perfect mario.
Cool that The Lizard from Spider-Man made a cameo in this movie.
Fun fact: According to Marc Webb on the DVD commentary for TASM, he was aware of the backlash on The Lizard’s design during production, so to please the haters, he wanted Spider-Man to say “You know, you kinda look like a Goomba.” during their first fight in the sewers. But they couldn’t get the rights to even say their name.
I was scared to death having to watch the de-evolution process on Toad back when I was a kid. But you can't go beyond PG or G level violence when people actually smile while being turned into goombas.
You and me both. I saw that shit as well as had nightmares for a long time. This is definitely nightmare fuel.

1:11 Best line delivery ever.
You see kids, this was the 90s Fant4stic for Mario fans. An attempt of a dark and gritty adaptation because the darker Batman changed Hollywood for a decade with many reboots and adaptations getting the same treatment. Made by people that felt like they were embarrassed by the light-hearted and family friendly source material, and multiple production issues from the cast and crew. Scripts that began as relatively faithful decent adaptations become more and more distant from what it was originally.
As a videogame adaptation, this movie is horrible. As a movie itself, I loved it. I still love it to this day. Though I admit I always wondered where that green slime came from. This is the first time I'm seeing this version of the scene.
Nailed it
I mean, there isn't really much you could adapt at that time from Mario Games which... don't really had much story to begin with.
And what you maybe could have done was way out of budget, a complete fantasy world with magical beings and all.
This movie is one of the "so bad it's good" movies. It's ridiculous in all the best ways. Reminding myself that this movie is a *Mario* movie only makes the experience funnier to me, because it has so little to do with Mario but the little references to things from the games are really creative for the ridiculous setting.
absolutely, its not bad. It's like an attempt to bring Mario's world to real life. Of course there are many errors but the idea is worth it.
Remember that.
I still feel like it should have had a bigger connection to Mario games.
@@evanrosman9226 Koopa City From Mario Kart 7 Looks Like

Honestly, if they want to attempt to bring Mario’s world to life, just make it a fantasy comedy with sets that cross between The Wizard of Oz and Alice In Wonderland, and hire Jim Hanson’s Creature Shop to make cartoony yet realistic designs to the games’ creature designs. It’s not that hard. Especially when movies from the 80s and 90s already proved that.

It's ironic how there's more focus on Goombas here than the Illumination movie.
I never understood why they didn't just call them the Koopa Troopas, instead.
Makes more sense to me than it does having them be Goombas.
They wanted to stick with the overall theme of the movie - complete trash.
@@OmegaMouse Eh, even though I'll agree the movie's not technically good, I still like it. It's a "so bad it's good" film for me.
I think the cops are supposed to be Koopa Troopa
Goombas were THE generic minions in the games so it makes sense that they'd have those as Koopa's minions here.
Goombas are the ones with the small round heads, and Koopa Troopas are the ones with the more lizard-like heads.
It has a total recall vibe to it.
I love that you added in the deleted bits.

@@chronogamer7901 this movie definitely has a hidden "illuminati" agenda, now that I am an adult I can definitely see it...the theory about the humans evolving from reptiles / reptilian aliens is certainly a theory coming from the illuminati. Also the movie has a dark atmosphere in general, certainly not something you would expect from the Super Mario universe for kids, if anything it's messing with the minds of children (mine included as this movie was a fever dream for me too). And there are some foreshadowing elements too. In one scene this movie literally shows the Twin Towers collapsing just like it happened during 9/11 after all

Of all the effects, the Goomba transformation looks like something straight out of Inspector Gadget.
Why didn’t they have king koopa turn into bowser into the de-evolver, it would make enough sense for this movie, and it would be faithful
The entire movie should’ve been at least faithful. But hey, at least we have the animated film.
King Koopa was Bowser's name at the time, it's not a "form" he takes.
And he does turn into a monster at the end of the movie.
Besides, having him as a giant T-rex for the rest of the movie would've been way too expensive.

Sorry, but this is the only way a live-action Mario adaptation could've worked at the time. The cute simple and colorful world presented on the NES and SNES games was better suited to animation, so to adapt something like that to live action would need to take drastic liberties to be truly good. And sure, this movie has its flaws, but the undeserved immediate hatred and mockery of it is overblown. This is a good movie, with a wildly creative take on this world and these characters. It doesn't play it safe, it goes all in with bold creative risks, rich pop culture and cinematic influences, political undertones, and an aesthetic that's campy, dark, and utterly unique. The cast is great, and Hoskins and Leguizamo have great chemistry as the titular brothers.
Honestly, there were a lot of fantasy movies from the 80s like Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story movies, Legend, Return to Oz, Time Bandits, or even Mom & Dad Save the World (which it’s director was originally hired to make a faithful adaptation for this movie) proved you COULD make a faithful Mario movie. They could’ve made sets that were a cross between The Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland, and the creatures designed by the Jim Henson Creature Shop who’s made realistic yet cartoony characters. Sure, some things can’t work in life action during the 90s like the Koopa Troopas, or the floating coin blocks, but there’s way you could work around it. Like make them wrapped in the trees or giant mushrooms and the Troopas medieval knights with turtle features. Toad could just be a little person wearing a animatronic head (like what they did on Star Wars), The Goombas could still resemble their games but just scale their size to the size of a Gremlin that Mario could just kick in the air. Hell, Tokka in TMNT 2 also proved you CAN make Bowser in live action. All costume and animatronics with a little help of CG. I’m not a filmmaker and I just convinced you that it wouldn’t be that hard to make a faithful live action Mario movie in the mid-90s. You just need the right people behind it and Nintendo putting more input on the project.
@@brandonspain12345 Okay, let me say this AGAIN- The Mario iconography was so abstract and limited to pixels that a story beyond what was shown in the games. The absurdist psychedelic cyberpunk world they crafted from those pixels was creative and unique, and I honestly couldn't have seen it done a better way at the time. Keyword- BETTER. Some Wizard of Oz style movie wouldn't have been better. No matter how they adapted Mario, it wasn't something that could be translated to live-action without putting a fresh spin on it. If complete accuracy to the games is your thing, the Super Mario Bros Super Show made at the time is your thing. An animated Mario movie like the Super Show would've worked as a completely faithful reconstruction of the game world. As a live-action adaptation, it wouldn't have. Accuracy doesn't mean quality. Some of the best movies ever made are loose adaptations of books. Blade Runner was completely unrecognizable from what it was based on. That's not to say SMB 1993 is one of the best movies. For what it was, and what it accomplished with what it was given, it should be appreciated at least. It didn't deserve the hate it got, and gets a lot better when you aren't obsessing over its accuracy to the games..
I've seen a lot of movies in my time, but no movie I've seen has been as weird as this one.
Yay! Actually, I haven't seen an old movie though.
As a kid I was wondering what was with that slime on the floor did not know king koopa devolved someone to slime.
I admittedly thought that it was Goomba droppings for the longest time. Would have been nice if they either kept the cut scene in, or did a take without the goop on the floor.
Before the slime was explained when I seen the movie the second time I thought it was king Koopa’s assistant, bleeding, green blood or pooping himself after he got punched by Mario.
Rest In Peace. Dennis Hopper 😔😢
Luigi was more successful working for John Wick rather than together with Mario

The Illumination Super Mario Movie was done with near full creative involvement from Nintendo and the Mario creator.

Why do people talk so much trash on this movie, Dennis Hopper in his prime as the bad guy Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo in their Prime is the good guys, awesome special effects, real creativity, and originality. This movie is worth way more to me than that new Mario movie
Because it's nothing like the source material. If it wasn't a Mario movie, people would've liked it more
@@TheBlueShark I guess, I get that concept. although, imagine I was a painter, and I made a painting of Mario, but the painting was basically a screen grab. Nobody would like that either.
I'm a big fan of waterworld, and battlefield earth too though, so there's that.
Hoskins lamented every moment he was involved in that movie until the end of his days, Leguizamo had to become a heavy drinker just to get through days on set because of how awful the direction staff were to work with(which led to one infamous incident where for a driving scene a fairly drunk John accidentally broke Bob Hoskins' hand and he had to wear a painted cast just to get through the rest of the movie) and Hopper was so disappointed by the script he concluded that he would only star in the thing just so he could have some money to buy his kid some clothes.
If it's a film you cherish from your youth, that's totally cool and no one can take that from you, most are the same way with stuff like the 1998 Godzilla reboot too. But there is a good amount of reasons why most have issues from both an internal and external perspective with that movie and it's not some modern history revision bollocks at play here.
