    I have overcome binge & emotional eating since switching to a WFPB way of eating 3 years ago. I only fell off the wagon once when I brought into the house vegan nutella. Now I keep my environment very clean, I am slim and have maintained my slim weight. I still overeat (salads, fruit) a little so I'm still working on it but I'm now so satisfied and nourished with the food I eat, that food is no longer a drug and an obsession. Before becoming WFPB I binge-ate for 40 years so I'd like to say that it is possible to change. Do not lose hope. When I binge-ate I was suicidal, I thought I would get a heart attack from eating so many calories so quickly, my weight would balloon so quickly and I would then have to diet drastically for months or longer to become slim again, before the cycle of "discomfort" eating and binge-eating would start up again. Please feed yourself the right unprocessed foods, learn how to put together simple meals following the calorie-density principles and you will feel full and nourished and gradually you will stop craving addictive foods.

    I hope I'm remembering correctly, but psychologist Dr Doug Lisle said that we blame traumatic experiences a little too much for binge-eating, he said that there are plenty of people who have traumatic lives around the world and are slim. He urged us to work on our environment and bring into the house just whole plant foods. At first I thought he was being harsh and dismissive, but now I tend to agree with him. I have had a very traumatic life since childhood and even now I can't remove myself from a very traumatic and dangerous situation. But I've been whole food plant based for 3 years and I've only had one setback, I recovered immediately and despite the daily stress and fear, I do not obsess about food, food is no longer a drug for me, at least not the healthy food I eat. And I feel more in control in other areas of my life too because I look better and wear nice clothes and at least I can say I feel happy about this. Now if I'm stressed I never turn to food, something which I didn't think it would be possible for me after binge-eating for 40 years. I would say, start eating well following the WFPB way of eating and you will find that your thoughts and mindset will become healthier too.

    Yes I’m 63 and I think I should have figured it out by now, BUT I HAVEN’T figured it out in my specific case. That’s why the shame around it is so intense.

      I only overcame binge-eating and food obsession (I even dreamt of bingeing) after changing to a whole-food plant diet, no no processed food or those with sugar and oil, at least for the first few months until your change buds have adapted. I still use some salt and it does make you eat more so still working on it too and I'm 57.

      @@luluandmeow I’ve been working on that very same thing and my tastebuds aren’t cooperating!! I’ve been forcing myself to eat that way and I really hate the food. Still bingeing on processed food about half the time. Where do you get your recipes?

    I have been binge eating in secret for the past 25 years since I was a teenager. I don't talk about it with anyone I know because many people simply don't understand. It was so great to have Chuck lead this conversation because it is so obvious that he has been through this himself and knows exactly what our urges and thoughts sound like.

    • @luluandmeow
      @luluandmeow Před rokem +5

      I did the same for 40 years and was even to ashamed to say this to an eating disorder charity. There is nothing wrong with you, it's the processed, addictive foods that are the problem. Please give the WFPB way of eating a go and be kind to yourself, we're all victims of ultra-processed food manufacturers and bad advice that even doctors give out. Good luck!

    I think people know what a healthy diet looks like. What they don’t know is how to stop themselves from bingeing on processed food.

    • @luluandmeow
      @luluandmeow Před rokem

      Not necessarily, there's a lot of bad advice around, for example about protein and olive oil, lots of conflicting information given out by health professional, the government, etc.

      Agree with Lulu. I know many who are on keto/paleo touting their great health benefits, and also many who say ‘everything in moderation’ is healthy. Of course the idea of what is moderate also varies. One friend considers a treat food 3 times daily to be moderate.

    Thanks Chuck and team for this video... There were a few reminders of thoughts which I have had in my journey... I really resonated when it was described as complex.... I remember thinking decades ago that if I was trying to give up cigarettes or alcohol that at least you don't need them to live. Food is so complex to come to a healthy balance with because total abstaining from it is not an option... It's involved in so many social situations and you have to actively engage with it several times a day... Complex is a really great way to sum that up.
    I remember one strategy I heard a smoker say that they did, which I adopted, really helps me... It was that if they did have a cigarette that they would really enjoy it. To do a loving gratitude with each inhale and be present with it...Basically I combined this into my growing awareness at that time that I have choice... I can't choose how my boss treats me, or other life factors like what happened to me as a child and the abuse, but in this moment I have a choice about how I respond... I had started to become aware of my pattern of arriving at the pantry doors... I started to become aware that in this moment I had a choice... I could go and feel my intense emotions in a safe way, or I could choose my numbfort food... I didn't call it comfort food... I was using it to numb myself, so I called it numb-fort food... I would ask myself if I was ready to feel what I actually felt, or whether I was preferring to delay it and have some junk food instead... If I chose the junk food I would choose to be present with the food and taste the flavour and appreciate it as an option... Over time I was more able to choose the option to feel the big emotions, rather than stuff them down to still need to be dealt with another day...
    I still do something similar now however my food choices are really healthy I might have some popcorn if I need to keep shovelling food in, or if I need to soothe I will have some black bean brownie ... I still have some days where I avoid how I'm actually feeling, but I don't have the same quantity of emotions stuffed deep down inside so once I feel, and release it's not so overwhelming as it was when I first started..
    I also want to acknowledge that for the past 3 years that I have been whole food plant based low oil sugar and salt... This has been the first time in my life that I feel I have had a truly healthy positive relationship with food... Eating what I want... Choosing healthy choices and not limiting quantity and choosing instead healthy quality... I haven't yoyo'd in weight... Without dieting I have very slowly lost weight over the years... In a healthy way, due to lifestyle... Prior to this I had been vegan for 8 years, and prior to that vegetarian for almost 30 years... Going whole food plant based has added so much quality and joy into my life
    Chuck... I've commented on posts before thanking you for what you do... You are very skilled... You do deep reflection, you research and generate great questions... You support your guests.... And you make it look easy and effortless. Thank you 😃 thank you also to everyone at the physician's committee... You all do an amazing job.

    Hello Chuck, have you heard of JUSTINA FROESE? Chef AJ did a great interview with her. She has worked with Dr. Doug Lisle (she has been trained by him) and he recommends people who suffer from binge eating to contact Justina. She herself struggled with binge eating for 15 years. She's a wonderful young Lady and has many videos on CZcams your viewers can watch and listen to her wisdom on this topic.

    Ive been binge eating and emotional eating for 40 years now. So overwhelming and I just can’t shake it.
    I also can only control my environment to a point as my partner is not whole food plant based and does not understand what I’m struggling with when I say I can’t have that in the house then eat the whole box when they go to sleep. So very I’m struggling with the binge eating then without the support of my partner I then emotional eat. I don’t know what to do.

    Great show on a much-needed topic. Especially loved you sharing about your own experiences with binge eating - I can relate. Would love to take the course but can't take time off from work to attend for 12 weeks running. Are there other resources available for people who can't attend the course that you could share? I'd love to have access to the handouts / homework, for example, or would welcome a pre-recorded course on the topic so I could watch when not at work.

    I struggle with emotional and binge eating at times, it's a work in progress. God did not intend to meet our emotional needs through food. The love, acceptance, and comfort we're looking for can only be found through His perfect, unconditional love. Celebrate Recovery is a great Christ centered program for this issue.

    Reaching out to your health care provider is not the solution in western medicine. The health care teams fueled disordered relationship with food. Finding a food therapist/ nutritionist would be a better suggestion
