  • Lucy is living off-grid with her family, in a yurt, in New Zealand, while unschooling their kids, running a farm, and freelancing as a digital nomad.
Here are all the places you can follow her adventure online via Lulastic Hippyshake:

I first discovered Lucy's awesome blog and CZcams channel while I was searching for information about how to stop using shampoo; and I ended up buying her awesome eBook about it (link below if you want to go no-poo too!), and I haven't used shampoo in a year and a half.
    Happy Hair eBook: lulastic.co.uk/...
I loved her videos about living off-grid in a New Zealand yurt, and still watch all of her parenting videos even though we don't have kids ourselves. We highly recommend checking out her videos!
The family quit their jobs, sold their home, and sold most of their belongings, and left London to go live off-grid in a tiny house a.k.a. a yurt in New Zealand.
They earn an income through Lucy's freelance writing work, and by renting their smaller yurt on Airbnb, and they also plan to earn an income from their farm once they've had more time to get it up and running.
Lucy and Tim currently unschool their two children, which is a "an educational method and philosophy that advocates learner-chosen activities as a primary means for learning."

I'd be curious to know what their savings was like going into this. Being able to just quit your jobs and sell your 3 bedroom place (IN LONDON) implies a significant leg up in finances. Not to mention casually finding land in NZ and shipping all your stuff over...this took some serious cash to make happen. All that said, they're full on living the dream and props to them!

@@sabrinastratton1991 that’s not actually true. I unschool my kids and they learn so much more than traditional institutionalized education. It’s not about pumping our children with information, but actually showing them that we can learn in every area of our lives.
Unschooling allows children to broaden their awareness of the many opportunities to grow and learn. It creates opportunity for truly freethinking humans, who will grow up and change the world. Unlike the many people who blindly follow without question, and who are narrow minded thinkers.
It truly is a beautiful sight to behold.

Right now I'm living in a yurt in the mountains outside of Seattle. I'm 60 and used to live in a yurt when I was a kid planting trees in the woods in Oregon and Idaho. Same people built the yurt in the late 70s. It's really interesting because your lifestyle reminds me a lot of middle-class hippies who join communes in the 60s. I took a great interest in what became of them in the 70s and early 80s. And the kids got bored because they didn't like the rural lifestyle. It's a dream now for sure. Good luck with everything I love your Channel

I took a renewable energies class this past fall- and a professor of mine lives in a yurt and uses small amounts of propane, and we calculated that it is actually less of an impact than to produce and implement the enormous amount of solar panels it would need to heat an electric element for cooking. It's just not viable, unfortunately. Solar panels still leave a huge impact to produce- but don't let that lessen your hopes on the future!

How do the visas allow permanent living? I had some friends who moved to NZ, bought a home, had their kids in school, owned a thriving business and three years ago had to leave when visa laws changed. They were devastated bc their kids had been in school there for years and only knew life there, the town protested to keep them and allow an exception, their coffee shop was a part of the community but they still had to leave.

Lula mentioned that she wanted to move away from fossil fuel. We found that we like using Denatured Alcohol in a small alcohol burning camper stove that is $2 to $15 (we found the slightly fancier ones are a little more efficient). You need to vent it a little, by a hood or a window that can crack open, but they burn very clean. I noticed a few tiny house people were using this and got inspired by them. It is great for sautéed veggies.

About 10 years ago my wife and I had met a couple that lived in a Yurt outside of town (Alaska). For many months they would invite us and some other friends out for dinner once a week at their home. It was cozy, warm, and unique. We have many times thought about doing this our selves, but my wife now has many medical issues that would not allow us to live this way.

I would love to find a favorite vacation spot and put up a Yurt.... I shall look into this more. thank you for sharing your lifestyle with all of us. I would have unschooled my children, but I sent them to a waldrof school, near princeton NJ talk about a combo lifestyle. Simpler living....especially as I grow older, and have Grand kids.... I think the tiny homes, or yurts are the way to do, in order to live simply on vacation...... SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT FOR SURE :)

Nice idea! I am concerned about the trampoline outside though, with the exposed metal framing. Pretty cool having it inserted into the ground for safety, etc., but someone could be injured quite badly landing on the metal rim. Please protect those precious babes by insulating the outer rim. Best wishes!

I saw a family in northern Canada who use sawdust, like a cat litter type of thing

They converted actual bathroom area into a bedroom. Normally with this style of yurt bathroom goes into that separate small room area.

Taking on too much change at one time can be intimidating and overwhelming for many people, though a simple off-grid lifestyle can be accomplished by integrating various elements of the lifestyle one step at a time gradually adding more and more aspects until the day one realizes they are where they want to be.

You know, I could quite happily live in a mud hut if I could wake up to Lucy's smile every morning.
