Family of 5 Living Off-Grid | BOAT ACCESS ONLY

- Mark and Chera rescued and renovated an old cabin and transformed it into an epic off-grid home for their family of 5. The catch? There's no road to get there, so they had to figure out how to do absolutely everything by boat and barge: transporting building materials, equipment, belongings, workers, as well as commuting to and from town for school and work.
They were limited in how much they could modify the existing cabin, so to make space for the kids' bedrooms, they attached a yurt to the house with a mudroom. For heat, they have a wood stove in the house, a pellet stove in the yurt (to keep a constant temperature for the kids), and backup wall-mount propane heaters for really cold days, or times when they're away from the house during winter (to prevent pipes from freezing). Since propane has to be delivered on a barge, it's really expensive so they try to limit their propane use as much as possible.
For electricity, they have 3 systems. First, a solar power system with 18 panels and a large battery bank which works great in the summer even though they're surrounded by mountains. But during the colder, rainier months, the system doesn't keep everything running so they installed a hydro turbine which creates electricity using water pressure from a creek up the hill, and this provides 24 hour electricity for most of the year. As a backup to these two systems, they have a propane generator but they try not to use it unless they need to.
The kids still attend school in town, and Mark and Chera have flexible jobs so they can work in town or from home as needed. They have 2 enclosed boats with GPS and heat for the 20 minute commute back and forth to town.
We loved getting the chance to spend a whole day and night with this lovely family and seeing how they've made off-grid living comfortable and fun for everyone!
Thanks for watching!

I don't know why people continue to say money can't buy happiness. Clearly it can
Let me modify that by saying "money can't buy happiness, but it sure makes it a lot easier to find."
my dad used to say to me when I was a kid, money can't buy good health but today it can.

Jarrod Underwood many people dont Understand true happiness
@@kevipurielhoungu578 When they say money cant buy happiness, it is true. If you're unhappy and rich beyond your dreams, money cant just magically make you happy. But for someone who has a lifelong dream that would be able to be realized by say, winning the lottery or making a clutch investment. Yes, money can buy you happiness, because you can now realize those dreams and live out the rest of your life comfortably without the stress of finance ever hanging over you again.
Its a perspective matter. Money cant cure depression, only you can do that. But it's alot easier to recover from depression if you also dont have to worry about the bills being paid.

So refreshing to see people being honest about the drawbacks of this lifestyle, and the ways they’ve ameliorated them. Off grid can be for all sorts of folks in all sorts of ways and that can’t be a bad thing at all. Great video!
For those questioning why majority of comments are so focused on their wealth, it's pretty simple. Typically when you hear "off the grid", it's a means of saving money and living a lifestyle that requires minimal capital. Although they are "off the grid" in the sense of power, plumbing, etc...they are living a life of luxury that is substantial in value many deem not authentic.
"off grid" mainly means unreachable, untrackable, etc. They have phone and internet, meaning they can be tracked. There's nothing off grid about this place at all.
It also doesn't help that even by off the grid standards, their "off grid" lifestyle is still leagues ahead of probably 1/2 of America lmao. Like for real, their property and house are huge, they have internet, boats, atvs etc....
TR TR they have their own power supply the only money they’re really spending now is on wood, gas and maintenance for boats and etc., they are off the grid away from everyone else
fk authentic, if i had money id live like this too man
Nope never heard the term "off the grid" based solely on saving money. If anything the term is used for those seeking privacy and self-reliance. And if the dude has the means to have all the luxuries a modern life in N. America provides while being LITERALLY "off the grid" then more "power" to him.
Their lifestyle might not be for everyone, but that’s the perfect place to live during a pandemic
I bet they can see future that why they did this☺️☺️

Really interesting and out of the box thinking compared to both living-off-the-grid and typical living. It's somewhere in-between. I admire how thoughtful they were about soul searching to know what they really wanted and then all the time, effort (in the rain in his underwear with the generator), and money they expended to make their dream come true. Seem like really nice people and they did a good job explaining all the challenges and how they overcame them.

@MrBadabimBadabum I understand you start where you are, but to even buy this kind of property would cost more than most people have. I'm saying this isn't living off grid for the average person. This is an extreme example of what you can do with money. You can have an off grid place and live alternatively, but to live in the style of this family would take more money than most are able to afford. I'm not saying you can't live alternatively with a little money, but this example is an extreme example. I mean, come on, they aren't living in the style that most off-grinders live.
The point of the video is just to display the many ways to live and start inspiring. It's not to copy and paste.
Yup, maybe they were born into wealth like their kids. Or they got super rich and were able to find such a home. Many can’t even afford that boat. But hey tv seems to favor the super rich and evil.
Words Unheard 🤔
Oh my goodness!!! SO beautiful!
Such a cool life, and they've worked hard to create for their children, and family 🤗
A huge thank you to Mark and Chera for letting us into their lives and beautiful home. A set up like this is naturaly stunning, empowering and just down right cool! I aspire to this level of energy redundancy in my home.
While watching this video I was thinking to myself “wow...good on these folks for working hard, saving their dollars and doing what they can to make their dream come true - well done”. I find these videos quite fascinating and to see how much effort and thought has gone into the process, even in a short video clip, is quite remarkable. Then I see all of these nit-picking, negative and jealous comments about this and that. Can’t people just be happy for them? There is enough negativity in the world as it is. Anyway, thanks for sharing your journey 😊
AGREEDED!! It's inspiring to me and I love seeing others success stories. I truly get grossed out seeing people grip and make negative comments because their jealous and don't see themselves ever being able to achieve this. People like that will always stay 'poor' in more ways the financial because they want what others first saw as a dream, then sacrificed and worked hard for. Poor is a condition of one's heart. You can have nothing and be very rich. Just seems like hard work and patience is something lost to so many!!!
well said, Brad. I was thinking exactly the same. It has been a beautiful constantly-changing project for them as they've adapted to changing needs. It will never be finished, just like any other stix n brix property, but the journey is part of what is beautiful and an adventure. They both work and I imagine have lots of bills like the rest of us do!
That's what I am thinking too .. people who work hard can live the way they want and have the lifestyle they like as long as they are happy. These kind of people inspires us to have a life we want as long as we work for it to make it come true.
Thanks for trolling and divining where the money came from at it's finest, Brad. I think that where the money came from is pretty important myself... exactly, how do you divine how hard these people worked for this? Maybe, she made her millions killing babies and selling their body parts for Planned Parenthood???... why don't you stop being such a tool???
BTW, it is not called negativity - it is called cynicism - becuase we all know how the world works and we have seen the negative effect on the locals that have lived here for generations 1st hand as the rich leftists move in and drive them off of their land.
Being a traitor to humanity is one of the few jobs left that allow you retire to your own secluded castle keep at age 35.
I've owned successful businesses all of my life since just after high school. I always made good money, but I gave my customers a good deal too. Auto mechanic/repair shops from Florida to just past the Mississippi below the Mason-Dixon line... we are talking $30-$60 per hour plus half of any hourly that my mechanics made since the early 1980s...
I always had the overhead of paying taxes, business expenses, and for a home that ate up most of that money.
Never, doing honest work, have I had the money to sink 5 million dollars into property, upgrades, boats, toys, helicopter delivery of winter fuel, and other ongoing and one time dump of $5 million into my dream retirement home by 35 years old... that kind of money seldom comes unless you sign in blood with Satan... and we all know it.
So save your leftist "were all better and more loving than you" lecture for the ignorant peanut crowd at the bread and circuses.
barking.dog.productions1776 cool story bro 🤙

This is the kind of place I'd love to live in. It's a dream! Good for them!
To be nestled in a beautiful corner of nature completely connected to the natural circadian rhythm . What an incredible view.
sure if you got the $$$$$$
jaim haas what your issue about the $$$$?
@@brad-marc26 it matters to the 99% that would like to have some "alternatives" too. Don't you think it matters?
@@jaimhaas5170 They did say there was a less expensive way to go about doing it- And there are less expensive alternatives. There are plenty of other videos online that show a more affordable version of this life. I just believe living in alignment with nature and its natural rhythms are best for the human nervous system.
jaim haas it’s an alternative..... Just because 99% of us can’t afford it, that doesn’t mean its not an alternative. All your comments make you look the green eyed monster👀

This must be the millionaire's version of off-grid lifestyle.
Yeah....place is awesome but looks very costly!
@And Remember Kids Don't Do Crack Cocaine Where do you think this is? They say 20 mins to town but surely not vancouver right? Maybe vancouver island...
Did you expect to watch some dirty, smelly hippies living in a tent? WTH?
This won't cost so much in Africa.
Complete with laberdoodles
So Amazing, Beautiful, i just Adore Y'alls home 🏡🏠, much Mahalo n Aloha, from Honolulu Hawaii
The most impressive off grid home I have seen.
You have done a incredible job, thank you for sharing your adventure.
You forgot to add the word "Rich" in the title.
Duong Nguyen I don’t think they are rich but good making a mansion in the woods can cost the same as a floor in an apartment in nyc
This is a set up that I have not seen before in off grid. This is pretty fancy and looks so cozy and comfy.
The stone/large rock work is amazing. Not just in quality of design, but in the size and number of terraces.
Beautiful absolutely stunning what an amazing place to live and bring up your kiddos blessed really blessed
Thank you so much for sharing
Wow! A beautiful set up. I wish I lived like that in a beautiful house such as that when I was a teen! I bet the children have lots of fun living there! The vision was good and it turned out very good! Maybe the children could plant fruit trees a distance away from the house! Wonderful! God bless you all!
These guys are awesome. Lucky. Great job. The place looks great. Good for you.
