880 Chevy 350 Engine From The Junkyard, Here Is What To Look For

  • Last year I pulled this 880 Chevy 350 block from the junkyard. This particular block has a mechanical fuel pump provision, roller cam provisions, and 2 bolt mains but 4 bolt main versions are available.

    Another engine builder recommended tapping those small plugs around the camshaft, and installing small pipe plugs. Instead of the press in plugs.

      Good idea. Stiffen the block in that area too. Do the rears too.

    I made over 580hp NA using that block, but a 4-bolt version from a 95 1 ton flatbed. Revved it 8000rpm hundreds of times without failure. Good block. Still have it and going to build it again.

    Iv got one but someone installed shit can smog heads but I'm glad I found your video of yours ...makes me feel a bit better....mines got plenty of power with the road gear dif and overdrive trans

    I picked up a 4 bolt main 880 last year out of an Isuzu equipment truck which is manual fuel pump capable. Only partially disassembled but so far looks great. Now i need something to put it in.😂

      Have had an 880 , .060 over in my Malibu Wagon for years. AFR HEADS, Trick flow Track Max ,hyd roller .555/.555 lift. Its very healthy.Daily streetable.

      @@harleysgarage327 Thats my off season engine, My track engine is a Dart SHP block,4.125 bore4 inch stroke crank, all forged bottom end . AFR 220 heads , Howards solid roller, near .700 lift, super victor intake. 850 holley DL DP. to get her ready, eng out ,change convertor to the 9 in. 427 in, 3.23 gearset changed to the 4.30. Then its really fun.

    It would be allot better to go 383 using the 6 inch connecting rods.
    I did the 383 using those 6 inches connecting rods and now my work truck is an amazing trailer puller - boat puller.
    The 383 works so well my 2nd truck is also getting the same kind of build 383.
    The 350 is a weak turd compared to the 383 I have now.

      @@harleysgarage327 Just to show you never believe everyone who make videos on CZcams you will get a laugh out of this knuckle heads channel by the name Myvintageiron7512 who I have seen on his video about building 383s.
      So I wrote that I was using the 6 inch rods in my 383 for a work truck then planned to us a basic came for like RV cam well the knuckle head was so worked up I was using 6 inch rods and a basic cam for towing and RV in my 383 he wrote all in big caps letter that my 383 won't even start unless I used the very largest of racing cams because 383 engines using 6 inch rods must have Big racing cams before the engine will even start.
      My 383 using 6 inch connecting rods and a pro-comp full roller cam system with just the cam rated for low end and towing now is running as good as any GM manufactured engine for my uses for the truck it pulls big trailers and putters along logging roads on the North Oregon coast like a tractor.
      I am absolute sold on the 383 now so no more 350s or any other small blocks.

      Where you have to watch out with a stroker in a heavy duty application is making sure that the piston has enough mass so that it can handle the heat load. A 5.7 rod might be a better choice than a 6in in a 383 for that reason.

      @@DaveMcLain So with you believing you are some kind of NASCAR engine builder I used the wrong rods and Pistons .
      I have news for you teenager knuckle head the 383 using 6 inch rids and Keith Black pistons for a 9-8-1 compression the engine now has 2000 miles on it and still running great even been towing my 30 foot jet boat .
      Go blabber your nonsense to other teenagers like your self.
      You are as dumb nitwit as that idiot with channel name MyvintageIron7512 who told me the 383 using 6 inch rod won't even start if the engines doesn't have the largest made Racings cam.

      I've heard they are too rigid for high rpms, the two bolt blocks allow some "flexibility"... This isn't my opinion just something I've heard several times...

      The shop I worked for, we build approximately 50 small blocks a week and out of 18 plus years I only ran into 1 that was metric.

    What was the total machineing bill? I just had a pair of heads cleaned/pressure tested/shaved and it was $250 😒

      Between the block, heads, and balancing it was around 2 grand. Certainly more than I hoped but the crank required heavy metal and the heads required new guides and a couple new seats. Thanks for watching!

    What casting number would indicate its a 4 bolt main roller block?

      They made 880's in 2 and 4 bolt versions, you should probably look for a 3/4 or 1 ton truck. Thanks for watching!

      Yeah. There is no easy way I have found to tell which is a 2 and which is a 4 bolt main until you open it up. Most of the ones I have found come from Tahoo or the GM Vans. A 2500 may yield a 4 bolt. I have used these to build Volvo Penta boat engines. Mercruiser used them as well. Great blocks to work on.

    That’s crazy 880 was a 5.7 vortec block . Must have been a 95 thing . But that motor should have been an vortec block with roller cam .

      @@harleysgarage327 If it's stock it is most likely a 638 biggest difference is no casting sand (every 880 Ive torn down had some casting sand left in it especially in the lifter valley) and it has the bosses for a factory roller but not all are machined for them and not all of them are machined for a mechanical fuel pump

      @@harleysgarage327 there other blocks but the 638 was common they all had the fuel pump boss best way to know if it was machined for mechanical fuel pump with the engine in the truck check it for a bolted on cover where the mechanical pump should be if it isn't there then no hole for the pump shaft most 638s are machined the pump if it is a 727 block it will have the fuel pump boss but it won't be machined also no bosses for a roller cam the 727s are usually found in Canadian built trucks BTW I forgot another big difference in the 088s is the timing cover 088s have a plastic cover with a very different bolt pattern the bottom of the cover is wider to allow for a crank sensor and relocator wheel

      @@insulman100 Yes my 93 Yukon has the factory fuel pump block off plate. This 1995 880 in the video still had a steel timing cover since it was a TBI engine without the crank sensor. Thank you for all the info on other truck blocks!

      You should be able to run a 168 tooth flexplate from any 88-98 Chevy Truck with a 350 engine. You can run an old school staggered bolt starter or you can get a lightweight permanent magnet starter from a mid to late 90's truck. This block came from a 95 suburban with that lightweight starter, after seeing that starter I put one on my 70's 305 and it works great on the older blocks as well with a 168 flywheel or flexplate. My block is being built as a 383 backed by a manual transmission for my old truck. Good luck to you!
