I know you mentioned you weren't sure people would be interested in this, but I for one REALLY appreciate you putting this together. I've always wanted a good beginner's explanation of a full 350 teardown. You've done vids like this before, but I always want to learn more.
I’ve thought about doing a Z28 type 302 clone but don’t have a car to put it in! 😂
find a copy of "how to rebuild your small block chevy". it was the "for dummies" book back in our day.
Supposedly Gen. 1 Chevy 350's getting harder to come by now...
Go to school
I love watching you do engines you make me laugh I'm 85 and did motors and tranny's I had a stop for 22 years of rebuilding motors tranny's and carbs did for stock cards Derek keep doing what you do I'm one of you top watchers love we hen you bring your kids and Jessica helping😊
Dirt cheap engine build would be one hell of a video. This here was one hell of a teardown, and I appreciate the time and effort. I'm a fan of the engine teardowns on how and why an engine may have gone bad, and if it's worth saving or not.
Because that wasn't a full rebuild.
Derek, you are an exceptional mechanic. I drive a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 with a 4.8 liter with 494,000 miles and engine has NEVER been opened up. Proper maintenance is a very important detail for me. Thank you for this video, you sir are the best.
I've been loving VGG videos for years. I've never "bleep booped" in the comments before, but Professor Derek just went next level. I've been teaching 23 years now and I rarely see someone with that depth of knowledge, the ability to explain things clearly, and a personality that keeps things fun and interesting. Carry on sir!
I think this would be a very informative and valuable series of videos. I'm sure there are a lot of people who would be interested in learning more about budget engine rebuilds and how well they work
agree
Could you not re-sleeve the cracked cylinders, then bore them out and rebuild? Sorry - novice here.....
@@VauxhallViva1975I hope somebody who knows will answer this. I thought of that and I also wondered if that solves the coolant problem cracked blocks create.
@@VauxhallViva1975Perhaps, but for the slightly additional cost you could find another used block with no cracks or otherwise big damage and recondition from there. If you are trying to get a small block Chevy, these should v be a dime a dozen ... but if I wanted a dependable engine to build upon why not an LQ4? Lots available, 400 or 500 hP engines easily done.
@@jimw6991 OK. Good comment, thanks. 🙂
Nothing better then having a morning coffee and watching some VGG
Nothing better than having dinner and wachting a new vgg video. Greetings from the Netherlands ;).
@@yannikpanic3233 definitely and a beer. 👌
nothing better than sauna, beer and vgg
Sure there is. Two of them.
Please do a rebuild series! You are showing us how to do things that are not easy, but you explain it and inspire us to try it for ourselves! Thank you for doing these types of videos!
This dude is so humble and amazing I'm am a huge fan
Yes, want to see a rebuild. Seeing you go through all that helps me and others feel confident in doing projects like this!
This is a fantastic episode Derek.. Great for peeps who have not got so deep in an engine before, or for those of us that only take an engine apart once every 5 years... Thanks man, much appreciated.
Nice save on keeping the head from hitting the floor
Baker right here, good job MR. Derek I been learning a lot from you teaching I look at it that this is your calling from upper above two teach the ones who don’t know, even when you fixing them up that heaven been running for many years and driving them thousands of miles back home.
As much as I'm getting excited abou the revivals, I love these engine builds / tear downs for the abundance of clearly explained hands on knowledge. Thanks Derek!
Yes Derek, please do a budget build for us all to watch. This video was excellent! Very interesting. I like how you take your time to help us understand what you’re doing and why, AND you do it entertainingly! I hope to soon tackle an engine project myself and as grasshoppa, I must learn from you master!
Iv tried goin to other channels like this but i always keep coming back here...feels like coming home...
love these videos where you're going in depth about what you're doing and why you're doing it, thanks and happy new year derek and the family!
As a Mechanic, I can tell You now that You are very good at rebuilding Engines. I have rebuilt Engines for most of My career and can say that not one piece of Your advice is wrong. You even reminded Me of a couple of things I forgot to mention in My last rebuild. I would recommend You for anyone & Thank You for posting such a good video. No kidding, was that timing chain shot! I have had worse though & also with the lifters & cam.
Wow, thanks Ken!!
@@ViceGripGarage Your Welcome! I do mention You too in some of My videos.
@@ViceGripGarage Definitely more of these videos! Maybe VGGRebuilds channel if it doesn't fit the motif of the main channel? Seriously, before CZcams you had to watch what a director and editor crafted, skipping half the most important details and nuance of tearing something apart...and the fun of it, like opening a dirty present. This video is so straightforward and interesting. I would ask for more closeups, like when you first started working on those lifters -- I really wanted to see what you were doing. Obviously it's just you, but it makes for compelling content. Is it possible to find a new block and re-use these parts? That would tie episodes together with a theme and keep us couch mechanics coming back for more...
I would like to see a complete rebuild
I really enjoyed this informative video.
Yes, budget build. Maybe more than one. The basics are the same but every flavor (Bow Tie, Blue Oval, Pentastar) has its own unique characteristics. Could be a great reference for a lot of guys' projects.
Engine color: Cadillac made a dark blue back in the 1950s with gold script lettering on the valve covers. Gorgeous!
Derek, that was just awesome man, great information for sure, great commentary and visuals as well. It really is awesome that we have people like yourself prepared to post videos like this that help guide us lesser informed people. Thanks very much mate
Had a crappy night at work. This just made my day
Buy a scintilla Vertex for Chevrolet
Eric is good at that isn’t he 😂
I hope future nights go better for ya, those kind of days (or nights ) really suck!
It was all due to lack of communication. A engineer changed something and the operator didn't tell the next operator to be able to tell me. I had to figure it out by trying everything that maintenance didn't lol
@@travkel33 oh geese 😂 sounds like mess for sure, lol
I would love to see a budget rebuild in the future. You, my friend, have definitely motivated me to try many things that I would have previously been too intimidated to attempt. Thank you for your content and for keeping it as simple to understand as possible. Grease stained fingernails is a badge of honor for this guy!!
He's done a couple budget rebuilds before.
Thanks for your video you are spot on,I worked in a junk yard when I was 13 years old after school and the owner taught me how to overhaul engines. You explained the process so well I still learned something new every I watch your video. I am 75 and still a gear head.
Hey Derek! Love your videos! I'm doing research now so I can start going to an academy to kickstart my learning on this matters. I loved all of this from before, but now I can't stop wanting to get "hands on" on this as you do. Love your revival videos, the way you explain, the humor, everything. Thanks man!
Derek, it's always nice to have this kind of information available to us today! Rock on brother VGG-Forever!
I know you say don’t take your advice unless you’re desperate, but let me say that was one of the most interesting and educational videos I’ve seen in quite a long while. Thanks for making it and for being so thorough in describing what you were doing. I’d love to see you build one back from the block up, maybe with your sons’ working on it with you.
Yes, pleeze.
My favorite automotive instructor said things like this about lawnmower engines, 3.8 and 4.3 V6, Chevy 350, and the Ford 302.
One for the best videos on engine tear down / rebuilding I’ve seen. Thank you for all the information Derrick! Keep up the great product and videos.
Please continue this series ! Maybe show how a fella goes from bad block to finding a good block on the cheap!
One reason everyone likes this video is how well edited it is - we know it took way more than an hour to find those cracks, but it didn't feel like you left anything out! Excellent, excellent work cutting it down to a manageable size while showing every important detail. And yes, we want to see one going back together!
Chevy orange Ford Blue
You gotta be a professional editor or something. I acknowledge and salute your work! Anyone with a brain in there head knows it took many hours to disassemble an engine and exlain how it works 🤯😅
Thank you for this walkthrough. You keep it simple. Thank you again for your work and video.
Thanks for taking the time to show us this important information about blocks! Keep them coming!
Happy for you Derek. Went from setting everything on the floor, to lookin around and trying to decide which work bench to set things on in your beautiful shop. You deserve it. Excited for every bit of content you put out!
You have master mechanics and then you have gifted mechanics like Derek. All the books in the world and most wouldn’t be able to retain this amount of knowledge and regurgitate it on demand like this guy. This is the kind of guy you drop any car off to and have no doubts if it can be fixed he’ll fix it.
Scrap the block & press on with the rebuild (please)!
Great video. Thank you for your time.
An excellent overview and discussion on doing a tear down. You really break it down and explain everything so well. Great information for a beginner, or even a seasoned engine fixer.
This episode was amazing Derek. It really sucks about the block, but on the positive this was one of the most informative engine tear down / build videos I've ever seen, especially on youtube as a whole. You really went down into each possible issue, explained how or why it happened, explained how to fix each one and how to get away with it on a budget as well. This whole video was a win otherwise. If someone asked me about engines and analyzing them, this is the video I would show them. I would absolutely love to see a rebuild video, in this style especially. Thank you again Derek!
Best Content on CZcams!! Thank you for all you do!!
Appreciate ya!
I don't think most people actually understand how many years it takes to have Derek's knowledge base. This is incredible stuff.
Derek, could you explain a little more about the gears on HEI type units. I recently just purchased a HEI to replace the points system in my El Camino from JEGS. I've assumed that this unit will be plug-n-play for the ole 350. Am I wrong?
Besides that, and to the community, I'm basically convinced that this man is a genius that poses as a mechanic...
Thanks for all of your hard work.
Hey Derek, sorry to see that that block was cracked, but would still love to see a budget build. Thanks for staying true to your roots. Always look forward to your videos
Me too! Let's do a rebuild. Thanks Derek.
Me three
You've really done us a doozy here Derek! One of my favourites of yours without a doubt. People pay for this sort of knowledge and here you are doing the world a favour 🙌 lets keep this one very relevant for a long time to come!!
Another awesome video, Derek! I really appreciate your knowledge and sense of humor. No BS, and you explain every step so I can understand how and why. I dream of doing a ground up resto of a 1st gen S10 and you give me the confidence to try. I would love to see a 'budget build' of a small block or even a v6 for such a project.
Really nice explanation and well done. Great tips for anyone wanting to learn more. I appreciated how you demonstrated the cylinder wall cracks.
One of the first VGG videos I ever watched was you rebuilding an SBC in your old home garage, it’s awesome to see how the channel has grown while also remaining true to its roots. God Bless.
I would really like to see a full in depth budget build of a SBC with just a few power upgrades, slightly lumpy cam, cheapo aluminum heads, long tube headers, etc. Maybe even a TBI build because you don't see a lot of those. But just a guide for something your average DIY Joe can throw together over a weekend and slam into the work truck. Either way, great video as always!
I’d love to see a “ so a guy bought a tbi truck and you wanna carb swap it” and see a build on that with heads and cam.
I second this!
Thanks And Happy New Year to you and yours!!
Very knowledgeable. Always enjoy your take on things.
Probably one of the most important and influential videos you've done Derek on your channel. We follow you through every adventure, every barn find and rescue, but most importantly, we all know a little more about what you're talking about. When you're going through an engine in the middle of a field, and it's taught me a lot about how engines really work. Invaluable information. Well done, sir.
Honestly one of your best videos. The information/knowledge you shared is on point. I've been a mechanic for the better part of my 53 years on this planet and have "rebuilt" many different engines. A large number of them being sbc's. A bunch built with a ball hone, rings, bearings, and a gasket set along with new cam/lifters and oil pump with great success. Simple works just fine a lot of the time. Thanks for another great video.
When you quote rebuilt on this channel my first thought was you spray painted it and lost the receipts.
As always, your techniques and device are spot on.
Thanks Derek.
I’m working the nerve up to rebuild my first engine pretty soon. I really appreciate the thorough detail and simple build type. I’m going to your channel for more vids. Thanks!
This man is passing out automtive wisdom that isn't available elsewhere. His smarts didn't come from books... it's easy to eat when it comes like this. Thank you...
Well his automotive smarts kinda sorta came from books but not your typical books he has said in a interview that he grew up reading those old books about how things worked(cant recall what they were called)/repair manuals & similar type of books but he also learned alot from just jumping into a project an learning about said project as he went along working on it..
Everytime you do one of these deep dive teardowns and inspections I learn something new. I never had anyone to teach me about engines so these videos tell me a whole lot of information. I know that you have talked about these very things in other videos but actually seeing one that shows exactly what you're talking about is much better. Thank you for taking the time to do this. It brings me one step closer to having the confidence to do more things myself.
I really appreciated this video and your explanations, Derek. I’ve always wanted to see an engine torn down and understand the construction. You nailed it bro! Thank you for this one and all your videos.
Great job, I like your laid back, relaxing style. Educational, and child friendly, Thanks
Derrick, thank you so much for this episode. For a guy in his late 30’s that has not been around engine building my
Whole life this was so informative. I would love to see any other tear down and a build series with this much detail. You are the best there is hands down
YES to seeing a budget small block build. Preferably SBF, but doesn’t really matter. I’m interested in seeing a dingleberry hone and what parts should probably always be replaced and which ones can usually be kept. Also some tricks like converting to a roller cam might be cheap neat and practical.
Converting to a roller cam is only affordable if you find a complete long block with factory roller cam that is affordable. I wish it was different.
Such a beautiful demonstration of repairing breaking down a motor I learned so much. Just wish I had the space to play all the parts out just to see like you did beautiful, beautiful, beautiful demonstration. Thank you so very much and I love your sense of humor.
Thanks for explaining things so well 😊
Derek is the voice in my head when I’m working on cars
Great video, Derek. You would’ve made an amazing teacher. I appreciate how much of your experience you’re able to share with all of us.
Really enjoyed this video. Thank you for putting it together. Clear decisive information.
For a new guy like myself getting into this rebuilding engine adventure, I must say you have taught me so much! Thank You very much! 😊
You are probably one of the best teachers of this sort of thing that I've ever witnessed. You kept me captivated for the entire hour and I learned a lot. That being said, YES! please do a budget rebuild. I'd watch a whole series on something like that. keep being awesome sir
These are my favorite episodes, listening to Derek teach. I would love to see a "budget build" video.
I really enjoy watching your videos my 4-year-old watches them with me we loved your video with your son and the 78 square body I think you guys did an thank you keep it up
Yes, would really like to see a budget build. Really love these detailed engine videos.
You are a better mechanic then you give yourself credit for. Some of the stuff I have seen you bring back to life.
Great episode. I’d love to see a very budget rebuild, maybe with follow ups on it in a vehicle to see how it’s holding up, compression, oil pressure, leaks, vacuum reading after 10k, 20k, and 30k miles. I’ve always wondered how well budget rebuilds work.
Loved the tear down and explanation!! A budget build would be awesome. Something to show the process of what to check for, clearances, etc.
I like the dark blue
I like the Chevy Orange
Excellent content. I took the heads off a town and country 6 cyl, front and back, and took it to the machine shop, and replaced the gasket and torqued it all back down and reassembled and it ran very well for a long time. I have never seen this engine torn down so I love watching this stuff. Keep up the good work.
Derek really goes into depth with what to look for on the engine teardown and if what you see as an issue is worth keeping or spending more money on. Good video with good insight on engine overhauls.
I can’t tell you how much I enjoy this channel. I’ve been binging these videos like when I first found Breaking Bad. Keep ‘em coming, sir!
I decided that Derek knows his trade very well when I watched his BBC build video where he taught all the important stuff about valve train geometry. Even an old guy like me understood it the way he taught it. Knowledge and the talent to pass it along, He’s being modest as usual.
Yup. I know most of his videos are kind of entertaining roadkill-ish type, but this video and the BBC one you are referencing show that Derek really does know what he is doing.
@@matts.8342 👍
😊😊
Brilliant and easily understood so keep them coming !
Great video breaking it down......Thank you Derek!
This was awesome to watch! I am quite familiar with these engines so I understood what I was looking at. Now my girl is becoming more interested in cars and engines herself, and I had her watch this episode. She said that she learned so much while watching it, and now she can correctly identify many of the parts in an engine! She loves your show btw and would rather watch it than pretty much anything else on tv now! She said she will help me on my next engine rebuild!
I parted 0ut many sbcs
Sounds like a keeper..
@@Blinknone shes definitely is! She even buys car parts now!
Yeah, definitely do a build from scratch. Ideally, I'd love to see a big block with a couple of turbos on it, but that might be too high tech for some of the subscribers. Really any kind of a build is always fun!
This was excellent - thanks a bunch Derrick
Thanks for the teardown Derek! I got an '80 camaro a few years ago and I've been learning on the fly. This really helps!
-another Derek
Please do a budget build! I love learning new ways and techniques to do it. I’ve never done one but after watching you do it for years now, I feel really confident I can build one. God bless you and your family Derek!
Every time I see a VGG video get posted I stop what I’m doing and see what a fellers got for us today love the content Derek
LOL!!!! "whats a little vibration, lets a guy know its runnin". You never disappoint. Thank you
I could not look away. I wanted to see it through the end. You are very good at what you do. Plain, simple and amusing. Thank you
I really enjoyed seeing the part about the lineup of bad lifters and then the rotation of the failed cam lobes. You made it easy to follow.
What a nice surprise a Vicegripgarage weekday video. Cheers Derek.
Glad you enjoyed it
I’m not here to blow smoke. I think your full. Deserving but full. I enjoy your show as it aligns with my interest and brand of humour😊
Great. Best rebuild lesson I've seen. I'm a hatched and saw back yard guy with engine hung from oak tree. I've done some rebuilds and was never sure what and why to replace. Thank you.
I actually love these more in depth videos. It’s something that often gets stepped over or we just get a quick “we’re installing new pistons” and you see 5 seconds and bam it’s all done.
Would love to see a budget build video!
What a great tear down full of amazing tips and things to look for. Im a little sad this wasnt able to be rebuilt, but the parts can revive another engine hopefully
You Sir, are a hell of great teacher and i sure do love your style of teaching.keep it coming please!
Solid vid thanks for making. Ive yet to rip an engine out and do the fancy work so it was cool to see. Thanks for doing the zoom zooms on the ol step by step
Thank you for doing this video. I was really hoping you would. I would LOVE to see a cheap build, maybe finding a new block and use some of the good parts you found. Anyways, thank you so much! Keep up the great work! You're the best!!
Been a while since I rebuilt an engine but watching this video brought me back to grade 12 auto shop in 1980 when I rebuilt my first 327 Chevy engine . I remember our teacher describing the process in disassembly just as you did , great memories.
Thanks for the great video Derek, was fun watching and reminiscing 👍
So interesting! Especially with you wonderful narration. Have a great Friday big feller!
Thank you for showing the full disassembly. I enjoyed it all the way through, even the boat anchor conclusion. I would like to watch a budget build also.
Love watching everything you put out. Would love to see a budget build.
yes, but i mean.. arent they all? more or less
I have rebuilt a few engines in my 60+ years, and the way you go through the process looks very much like how I do it. Enjoyed this one a great deal.
I like Chevy Orange but as long as it’s clean and done right it will look amazing in any shade if you will
