  • My recent Engelhard silver bar needs a little TLC. This simple potion uses warm water and industrial ammonia, a known degreasing agent, to clean off the build up of 35 years of gunk ahead of my plans for removing the unsighlty toning spots. Enjoy!

Nice video. I definitely like to keep a mirror finish on my new bars that are more massed produced and just look better with a mirror finish (like the Brittannia Bars) but I leave my older Englehard and J&M bars alone. They actually look better kinda scruffy but I guess it's all about preference.

    Only Use:
    1. Alumunium Foil
    2. Baking Soda / Soda Cake
    3. Very Hot Water
Very Clean & Shining Like A New Item

That seems to be the best fastest way to remove tarnish. It also seems like the most gentle way as well. Does anyone know if it actually strips any silver away or not with that method?

That baking soda and boiling water and tinfoil works the best

This is how to do it. That industrial strength ammonia is scary..

Like coins... I disapprove of cleaning vintage bars. But that one's yours, hehe... so do with it what you want.

I have an engelhard 100oz poured and I’m wondering if it is normal for the sides to have grinding scuffs as well as parts of the bar showing a copper tint to it…copper tint mostly appears in the small pores

Best method and the cheapest, is good old silver polish and a yellow duster. Then use the silver cloth to finish.
I prefer silver shiny, how it's ment to be, like a mirror.

You definitely did start removing the toned areas. Wow. Ps I was surprised you didn't test spot it first. But well done.

I did! I was surprised at that but I realised that this toning is likely silver sulphate, which is why I could smell it. I essentially produced ammonium sulphate when I used the ammonia.

Ordinary dish detergent would work fine. The plastic packaging contained PVC which comes out over time. The rubbing is totally unnecessary and unfortunately will leave hairlines.

Yeh but dish soap doesn’t sound as fancy as ammonia! Haha cheers dude!

Do silver bars milk spot too? Or is it just coins? Tried finding the answer online to no avail.

Yes they can. I had a unicorn bar spot once but it tend to be those that have been cleaned and polished. Poured and cast bars almost never spot, but pressed might

Any silver that has had a detergent introduced to it in the minting process can produce milking if not rinsed properly. It's usually in pressed bars with a mirror finish and uniform size.

Yep you’ve got to be a bit more careful with proof finish stuff, but this bar was already a little worn so I wasn’t too worried. Good luck!

Not if rubbed on as many do. Liquid detergent works well on PVC residue with no rubbing.

That’s just one viewpoint on silver. Some people insist it devalues it, but on a pure bullion basis it’s literally not possible to devalue the raw silver content. I wouldn’t clean a highly collectible piece but this was not that so all good!
