Diesel was no choir boy. He would often mouth off at the Umpires and those girls clearly chucked a sad Remember these were the days when fist fights were the norm and Umpires scored best hits
The Brownlow is the umpires' award, always has been, many other awards have been instituted by media over the years, by the AFLPA, coaches association etc. In the '70s Truth newspaper tried (& failed) to create a rival, the Gold Cazaly. No one remembers that now. None match the prestige of the Brownlow for whatever reason, but that's the way it is. Obviously, players' conduct on the field is a component of the votes awarded as 'fairest & best'. As spectators we have little idea of the interactions between players & umps, & we only have Williams' word for it that he didn't do anything untoward during the game. You can get 44 touches & still mouth off. Maybe Williams got lucky as a winner in '86 when he actually tied with Dipper on 17 votes, the lowest winning score in the era of 22-game seasons. When he won in '94 he was clearly the best player in the league. Another point would be, why did the other ump allow Russo to coerce him to exclude Williams from the voting altogether? Sounds odd. Bear in mind umps don't see the stats sheet & have to go on the 'feel' of the individual performances, maybe the 26 handballs didn't resonate with the umps as much as, say, 26 kicks would have.
It's prestigious because it the AFL's official award and gets mentioned every time you are on a broadcast. Russo coerced a young umpire because of his seniority and it was 1993 so easier to get away with it.
@@hotkeyafl It should always be the umps' award, people have been complaining about it since it was introduced. Nothing changes. Some years there is a clear best one or two players, other seasons not so much. The problem with it is that now it's always won by a mid.
It's well known that some umpires had favourite players and also hated others. They should be professional, but they are human and corruptible. Sometimes a players verbally abuses an umpire. That shouldn't influence the voting either. The Diesel 44 possession case was ridiculous to say the least. Then again what do Umpires know about the game? Bruce Doull hardly received a vote from umpires yet won many Best and Fairests, team of the century, AFL legend. Same with Leigh Matthews and other greats like Big Nick. Dipper, Libba or Hardie are not superior players to Jezza. To have a chance of winning a Brownlow you need to be playing in a certain position, play in a team with few champions that take votes away from you and stand out. AFLPA awards, best and fairests, Norm Smith medals count more than Brownlows imo
I was a in my mid20's in that era and can remember diesel earning that tag as the most hated player on the field. A lot of us were quite happy he got duped.😁
I’m a Stkilda fan however I love afl I don’t favour anyone I’m unbiased Yes Greg Williams was robbed of the Brownlow in 1993 Williams that day v melb was clearly best on ground with 44 possessions and a goal Williams that day deserved 3 votes Hanna didn’t deserve any votes even though he had an okay game there were others that had better games Hanna only had 19 possessions no goals so it was wrong for Hanna to receive 3 votes Williams should have been a triple Brownlow winner umpires should refrain from being biased in games and judge the afl players based on the game they play
The last game of that season I think Carl vs Essendon he got two Mercuri three and bombers lost if I remember right so that too could have been switched around normally the player from winning side gets the best on ground. Also if I remember Williams gave away two fifty metre penalities in tjat Melbourne game so perhaps he was fibbing about his attitude to umpires that day. Happy to be corrected as memory is hazy but I remember there was chat about the penalties costing him the medal at the time. I'm not sure if there is a connection but it was the year of the indigious that season so Wanganeen winning Brownlow and Long the Norm Smith might have conspiracy theories abound O'Donnell was Essendon best in the gf so he could also claim to be robbed too
You might be thinking of 1994. In 1993 carlton played sydney in the last round & essendon had the bye before the 1st final. Williams gave away two 50m penalties against st kilda in R5 1993 where he also got 40+ disposals. He also got 3 votes in that game against st kilda despite being annoying to the umpires. I agree Wanganeen wasn't the best but got a lot of frees so got the attention of the umpire. Long was deserved of winning the norm smith, but could argue O'Donnell, Calthorpe, Mercuri and even Kernahan could have won it. Don't forget Rioli also handed Long the medal.
Maybe it’s time that something like Champion Data did the Brownlow votes. Greg Williams got 44 touches and no vote and lost the Brownlow by one vote.
Yep it's all come to light again after Lachie Neale the other night.
It's too bad Russo hated Williams.
I don’t think the umpires should be involved with the Brownlow. They have too many prejudices. For or against. The same with the media.

Leave the cats at your peril
Robbed? Yes! Good!!
No, because he won 86 & 94
44 touches 2 goals and not a Brownlow vote?? WTAF?
I agree
44 touches and didn't get 1 vote. How the AFL let the umpires get away with that is hard to understand.
Exactly and Carlton had 43 shots at goal, no doubt due to the supply from Williams.

I hated him as well, especially when he hit Anthony Rock 😄

If I remember correctly, Carlton might've also not given him a vote for their B&F night.
according to mike sheahan yes
