- Primary chain breakages are not unheard of on these machines and the crankcases can be rendered scrap as a result. With the primary cover finally removed to tackle a primary chain upgrade, another , potentially dangerous surprise was spotted and it is not the first time I have encountered it! Well worth owners taking a look, I would say.
Interesting, I had that happen to me on my Continental GT250 back in 1975ish, locked up the back wheel as I was entering a 'T' junction, I thought they would have fitted some kind of locking device on the bolt, I'd best check my GT535 ASAP, thanks for that info Paul
Well, that could be potentially dangerous. Good point!
Good tip, thanks. You have to wonder if they got blue stud lock and blue Hylomar mixed up in the factory.
Great advise. Thanks.
Good advice.....🇨🇦
Wow life saver 👍👍👍
Hi Paul, thank you for the knowledge you are sharing. There is any way to lock this bolt (tab/lock washer)?
I had the same problem with my BSA A65L back in 1969. I'd removed the cover to inspect the clutch when I noticed that the same bolt had come loose. For some reason, no matter how much I tightened it, within a few hundred miles, it had come loose again despite using a thread locking glue. I never did cure the problem.
Hi Cris, locktite did not work? What if you change the washer with a tab or lock type? Did you try that too?
Excellent way to solve the cover situation, Paul. You cannot notice the type of bolt lock that holds the gear that moves the primary chain. English Renold has always given a show of competence in terms of alloys and heat treatment of its manufacturing components. Thanks to your insights, motorcyclists who have acquired the new REs. Hindus, if they care for the life of the machine, as well as for their own lives, should stop by and solve the problem once and for all with the greatest master of the Royal Enfields in the country.
For primary chain upgrade, wich brand is the best ?
My bolt came loose & the tensioner had been fitted at the factory upside down alarmingly
Paul, what year was this Continental gt?
I think it was a 2017, if I remember correctly.
@@paulhenshaw4514 Thank you Paul. How much torque should be used to secure this bolt, and did you use Loctite on the bolt? Can you also tell me what kind of liquid gasket should be used on those cases? Do you know of any Classic Bullet ecu engines that have this problem? For some unknown reason, it seems to be more prevalent with the Continental gt 535. Thanks again Paul.
@@marcr8968 Hi, i just tightened the bolt by feel, but I also used a thread locking compound on it. There are dedicated gaskets for the engine cases, no sealant required. I saw this problem on one 500 unit engine I worked on as well, so it is always worth checking.
@@paulhenshaw4514 Thank you Paul.
No form of tab washer?
