Royal Enfield 535 GT Asbo 24 short test ride after retarding inlet cam timing.

  • This machine has already featured in a couple of my videos a few years back and I tuned it by shortening the cylinder barrel and fitting a carburettor conversion, upgrade valves and performance camshafts from Hitchcocks. This ride, however, was taken recently, after a change of owner and after retarding the timing of the performance inlet cam, at the request of the new owner, following my success in doing this on another, yellow 535 GT machine also featured in my videos - Asbo 33. This retarding of the inlet cam timing tends to enable the engine to produce more power, higher up the rev range, at the expense of a small loss of power lower down.

    That brought back memories of over fifty years ago, sounding eerily like my 1961 Crusader Sports!

    Congratulations Paul. The owner will be very happy. Many people, upon seeing this, will acquire R.E. sigles Continental hindu 0 KM at a very favorable price worldwide for you to make them fly low.

    Yes! I thought almost immediately (after the roundabout) about the gearing, too.

    Nice one Paul. That's one hell of an improvement over the GT I owned for a short while. The bog standard bikes are disappointing and I sold mine and bought a Sportster 😁.

    Sounds radical. It sounds like it doesn’t like to be below 4000 RPMs.

      It was a while back when I tuned and rode this machine, but from what I remember, it performed reasonably well north of 2,500 rpm, but really woke up around 4,000 rpm.

    Nice ride Paul. I've been gone for awhile with family stuff and I've really missed watching your videos. Buzzy little bike. Was waiting for the clocks to take flight. Is the bracket loose or is the rubber just that soft? She goes good regardless.

      Hi Charlie, welcome back! The clocks are not loose, but just seem to do that on these machines!

    The idle screw is loose [again]. A basic fault with the new Concentrics. Went up to 1500 after getting hot so dropped it back to 1200 where Paul set it. It backed out on the trip to Paul, though to be honest it had already dropped a little just before. The gearing's as it came to me. It's happy to lope along all day at motorway middle lane speeds. Didn't notice much difference excepting that it revs about 500 more and pulls harder above 5000. Had the job done to save the valves when missing shifts. I've bent valves before......

      Thanks for the feedback, Jeremy. Your description of how it has changed is about what I would expect, but it may also feel slightly softer and smoother at lower RPM's. A new 'O' ring might fix the tickover screw.

    Enjoyable ride Paul. She certainly doesn't mind dipping into the red zone and likes to run. Couldn't read the speed due to vibration , either in the camera or the clock. Thanks. Dan. 🏍👍🇨🇦

    One would think a little faster tick over would also be better to ensure a good oil pressure too.

    I've been watching you videos through my TV and I just noticed I gave you a thumbs down which I have now corrected. Sorry about that. That bike sounds great and goes really well apart from the popping which maybe down to the exhaust and I note your sedate progress through inhabited areas.

  • @richardandrews6754
    @richardandrews6754 Před rokem +1

    Hi Paul, the cam timing mod is very interesting, have you ever tried changing the exhaust cam timing as well, in the video it sounds a bit lean, popping and banging on the over run. Certainly goes though another winner I recon.

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před rokem +1

      Hi Richard, changing the exhaust cam timings doesn't seem to have the same impact as with the inlet timings.

      @@paulhenshaw4514 Hi Paul, thanks for your reply, once I get to the stage of timing on my bullet I will check out the full valve events to see what I have got in terms of duration and overlap, I suspect it will be very tame. Interesting stuff, off to watch some more of your older videos very enjoyable, great scenery too

    Paul does retarding the inlet valve timing get the bike more torque or more top end!?

    • @paulhenshaw4514
      @paulhenshaw4514  Před 3 lety

      Realistically, both, in that the maximum torque figure may increase slightly, but at higher RPM's than where it occurred previously. The torque at lower RPM's will be lower, though.

    Don't know why this was recommended to me only now but do you or anyone knows if the whole bike was repainted in order to have that redesigned old in gold "Royal Enfield" logo on the tank?
    I want to remove mine but seems to be painted over and clear coated on top of the tank.
    Is it possible without repainting the gastank?
    Thanks!
