I was a human fighter named Beldar the Brave. According to the story, the high wizard payed us to stop Bonegnasher the ogre from finding this orb that was in a crypt of an ancient king. That was game 1 of the set and we were level one. This module did not pull any fucking punches.

Campaign Idea: A Mind Flayer Hive wants to get a hold of the orbs. If put into the tank of the Elder Brain the Brain would be able to use the Orbs collected powers via any of his Mind Flayer brood & just use it's Psychic Abilities to brain wash the orbs into compliance. Then it's a McGiffin Race to keep the Orbs out of the Illithid's tentacles.

a youngling hatchling cuddling with its parent, "Where do we come from? How did we get here?" its asks. "That is a long story surrounded by mystery and secrets child." the parent replied with a smile. "Now off to bed with you."
"Would you tell me the story of how we came to me?" its eyes light up in excitement.
"Lord Io, help me...…. Yes child." tucking the little one in with its already sleeping clutch of brothers and sisters. "Always the curious one"
"Io the god of all dragons. The seer of things that were and things to be...….."
the Child asks "Why are we starting here?"
"Because it is the beginning child."
"He saw what his children were becoming. far from what he wanting for all his children. So like any parent. He has to teach his children a lesson in humility. He used Moradins anvil to forge out 12 souls, 12 Protectors as he called them. To protect the humanoids from the tyranny of what the dragons had become. As for the lesson in humility. He also crafted many orbs. He sends the 12 out to deal with his troublesome children with the orbs."
"What happed" the clutch of children ask enthralled with the story at this point.
(Sign) "The 12 Protectors gave the power to the people that had none by trapping the souls from dragons inside the orbs." the parent said, with a distant and sad look as if remembering the events. "...…...And gave those orbs to the people to safeguard. For as long as those orbs exist. Dragons can be controlled." ending with a smile.
"Can we be controlled like that? Against our will?" one asked with fear in its voice.
"No child. What was done, had to me done because the little human like races have a very undetermined future. And Io wants to see it play it out."
the children all nod in understanding of the story.
the parent finishes "We Steel Dragons are descendants of those 12 Protectors, To help the little human like creatures become whatever they will. Its why Io has blessed us with our special gifts. To become like them, To live amongst them. Who do you think told those storys about how the orbs were created to the humans, the elves, dwarves, and the like? Hmmmm"?

We then went on a series of huge quests find all the orbs including the lesser orbs. After the quests we were extremely wealthy and powerful (extra bonus feats and even a couple extra mythic abilities for story and good RP) including becoming the sovereign of a new nation. We gathered them all together on an remote island to not be disturbed and with multiple mythic empowered rituals and spells i had the souls released into the care of Apsu( a LG dragon God) while draining the majority of there power. This fully ascended my character into CR 30 demigod. I technically could have apotheosised into a true God, but demigods are allowed to be more hands on in the world so she stayed empress. She still hasn't fully ascended and we have her show up in other quests sometimes when we play in that world. The Dwarven story just gave me a campaign idea. Have the Players be Monster Slayers & Dragon Hunters that slowly learn this & have to decide whether to keep killing or restore the honor to dragons by reuniting them with the orbs & helping lift the curse or kill the dragons & take the orbs & treasure for themselves. The latter would then warp them like the dragons into mad warlords where they eventually become the BBEG & an NPC party of heroes comes to kill them.

  • @mountainking1166

What if all the Dragon Orbs are actually just fragments of the one true dragon? Not a god per se, but along the same power level. Every dragon type covets its respective color orb for...ressons. Unbeknowest to all but the most ancient dragons, if all orbs are found, a ritual could be performed to enable a sufficiently powered dragon to "mantle" the One True Dragon and gain supreme power. Just a fun thought to play with.

  • @Zasek2112

I propose that the illithid created the orbs very near the end of time in a series of experiment to create their own crystal sphere's searching for a way to escape reality much like the obyrith once did but they accidentally destroy the universe in the process forcing them to time travel back to the beginning just to give themselves more time, in doing so much of their civilisation and knowledge is lost and the orbs are scattered throughout creation. I still need some time to flesh out this idea tho and see if it works. Surely the illithid at least have their own myths about the orbs.

We recently killed a Adult red dragon to which my patron struck a deal with the party in order to take its soul in return of a gift.

Nice one, AJ! It's been a LONG time, but I think I used one of these only once. It was an orb the leader of a Kobold army wore around his neck. It mutated him into being what looks like a 20' tall Kobold-Green Dragon hybrid. He was possessed by the spirit of the ancient green dragon in the orb and except for his looks and size, he was an ancient green dragon. He had a bunch of abilities for himself as well as empowered all his allies on the battlefield. The Kobold army had Green Dragon allies that were more compelled to serve than actual allies. It was 2nd Ed. Could that have been an Orb of Dragonkind? I got it from one of my friend's source materials. It was at the high-level part of my campaign and the first time in a long time the group feared/respected Kobolds.

  • @Purple.mind...Honored.one.

Thank you AJ, this is going to help me a whole bunch when the characters in my campaign start heading to the other main landmass, in a way this kind of reminds me of the eldunary from the inheritance series, this actually works for being able to fit in with the lore of dragons and the kingkiller star and everything like that, I have a continent of giants and one of many sentient monster races, that used to be under the dragon's claw, until the elves had something to say about, but you gave me the brilliant idea of the only dragons who were not affected by the dragon rage mithos, was the 12 trapped in the Crystal spheres, as a result some of the more powerful individual dragons attempted to turn themselves into that form to escape the rage...... And hell anyone go ahead and steal this concept it's just fun, ( specifically the magic loophole, make your own world)

Kind of a Tower of Babble type punishment. I love that each orb has a specific personality as well. Too many things to say about this subject. It's all good😀
Ps. If I were the DM I'd come up with a personality for each orb that fit each color of dragon. Going with the Dwarven lore, each orb would have the personality of the very first (insert color or metal) dragon of their kind
Pps. Nvm, the set personalities were listed after I made the above comment😋

Considering the fact there is another world ruled by dragons, one that the gods are silent on even, AND the fact that there are multiple orbs ... it really feels like each of these stories could be true simultaneously, and each is just the creation of one of the orbs. The dwarven myth actually has solid evidence behind it though. Seeing as they are objectively the best at crafting things, and they still hate dragons to this day.

An orb of dragonkind, the dragon inside is Mad and suffers from an identity crisis. I believes it is a Genie it uses the wish spell and curses to grant it’s user wishes. Keep the fact that it is the wish spell secret. The orb only obeys if it’s master goes along with whatever delusion the orb is suffering at the time.

So the spirts in the orbs could possess people and turn them into dragons. So keep away at all costs. Especially dragonborn and half dragons, since they would be the easiest to fully transform into a dragon.

Possibility: The Orbs of Dragonkind are in fact a number of the 333 jeweled or gem keys needed to unlock and awaken the greatest threat to all the multiverse and existence, the sleeping overgod of entropy? That being said, what if there are more than 12 orbs? I mean, cloud and shadow dragon orbs? Those dragons are not metallic, nor chromatic in type. Which gets me thinking. Where are the Gem or Lung or other orbs of dragonkind? Mercury dragons? Purple dragons? Mist and Astral dragons? Than we get into.. if all types of dragon had an orb corellating to their type... and they were ALL keys.... Itd make some sense. Though, one could argue, the event that necessitated the creation of the keys pre-dated the arrival of dragons, thus removing this whole idea. If I remember correctly, dragons came after the dawn war and the creation of the Abyss and that whole mess. Sssooo, maybe. But its an idea to toy with for a campaign. Maybe the dragons we know today were actually created around the time and during the Dawn War? Who's to say?

  • @StevetheSteve01

I challenge the idea of keeping it limited to one or two. I think there's the potential for some really cool high level hijinx with many orbs in play on a large scale.
What if consolidating them in one place is Cosmically a really bad idea, and it falls to the PCs to keep them from being collected? Finding suitable caretakers or hiding places could fuel a high level campaign indefinitely! There's no shortage of Demon Lords, Ancient Dragons, Doomsdays Cults, wannabe gods, and Powerful Liches who would want to mess with your plans.

Good stuff here. I am currently running a campaign where dragons have log since died out and are considered legend and fiction. Much the same way we think pf them in real life. The main story line involves a mysterious power seeping into dreams and minds of mortal races and is in fact a new deity slowly coming into being in the realm. To fully manifest it will need something made of prime material matter than can contain it. Only the ancient dead dragon bodies are capable of such a gestalt. Of course a dead dragon needs a spirit to revive properly. Yeah gonna be a dragon orb involved for sure.

Totally going to put all twelve in my campaign..........BUT theyre going into arti-furnaces to power spelljammer ships(along with 3 other artifacts) to make a fleet of 15 arti-furnace powered spelljammers, in an attempt to stop Atropus from coming to Toril and ending the world.
Making it so regular spelljammers get w/in a certain distance, the helm stops working if piloted by a living being, so alternate power source is needed.
Thought it would be EPIC to have 15 artifacts in a campaign, but if the players try to take them for themselves, it will literally doom all existence 🤣😁
Don't know exactly how theyre gonna stop Atropus yet...........maybe a ton of elven High magic(ritual casting) creating a sort of Mythal around Atropus, but it keeps everything in??
    OR
A ritually cast "supergate" that sends it to the abyss, or Carceri, or the positive energy plane.......SO MANY OPTIONS!!!!
Whatever it comes down too, the "final fight" will be buying enough time with the fleet of arti-furnace powered spelljammers(DISTRACTION!!!!), while the ritual spell is completed, and saving the entirety of
    Toril.
The thought of 15 artifact powered ships, which can invoke some(not all) of those artifacts powers (decimating wave after wave of undead) buying enough time to complete the spell that
LITERALLY saves all of Realmspace............ITS GONNA BE EPIC!!!!!!
Still in the beginning of it though, theyre just now meeting their 1st spelljammer captain, after their current quest is finished. Probable 4-6 story arcs just to track down everything needed for the culmination to happen in the 1st place.
Thought it would be particularly "insert whatever descriptor you think best" of me to have the party with 15 artifacts they must quest for/have at their fingertips, the entire story........BUT, not have full access to, unless they want EVERYTHING to die!!
    Teehehe 😂🤣😁
Thank you Mr. Pickett, good upload!!
