The original theatrical version was only released on VHS and Laserdisc. My copy was downloaded from certain websites.
Originally I think this was supposed to take place years in the future after the end of Highlander 1 but in the script the immortals weren't aliens. What I think happened was the production Team ran out of money while shooting and the people promoting the film took it over and re wrote the script and made the immortals aliens. Sadly even the renagade version where they disregard the aliens plot line couldn't redeem this film. Highlander 3 wasn't perfect but it was a proper sequel to the first film as they played it like Highlander 2 never happened.

No: I've read the shooting script (you can too, just look for it online) and the immortals were always going to be aliens from planet Zeist. That stupid idea was always going to be there. What happened is that they decided to film in Argentina because it had great locations and was cheap, but while they were there the local economy collapsed and inflation skyrocketed overnight, so the planned 14 million dollars budget ballooned into 34 millions. The bond company (i.e. the insurance company) took over in order to grant the completion of the movie and closed down production 3 weeks ahead of schedule, with several scenes unfinished or unfilmed. Then they half-assedly edited the footage they had and released the flick. Some of the stuff that got missing included Connor and Ramirez being born
eincarnated on Earth (Scotland and Egypt), the Kurgan from the first movie being Gen. Katana's assassin sent to Earth, Katana wanting Connor dead because the people on Zeist are still waiting for him to return (the whole "Kill McLeod even though he's about to die of old age" bit is still stupid AF), and a few other bits. The movie we got (well, I got to see the European cut, which was slightly longer than the US release and had a couple of scenes reintegrated) was a mess, but had they got the chance to fully film the script as intended, it would've still sucked because the whole premise was trash. I love the way "Highlander 2" looks, it's like a cross between "Blade Runner" and "Batman" (the Tim Burton movie) with great cinematography and sets, but even in its improved cuts it still is the quintessential bad sequel. There should've been only one.

I like Part 1 better.
They say the movie sucked because they couldn´t finish it completely and had to work with what was available. But honestly why were they filming scenes with aliens who fly on hoverboards and stick there tongue out while laughing like "ehhhheeeehhheehheehhe" in the first place?
Technically, they didn't finish it, the insurance company did. On the BluRay is a nice documentary about what happened with the economy of Argentina and why an insurance company would finish it. The insurance company actually locked the producers and directors off the set.
Yes, what was filmed was the plot: Immortals was supposed to be aliens from Zeist and at the end, Connor returned and led the rebellion.
The insurance company pulled the plug before the last scene could be filmed: heading up the mountain to see the sky. That was actually filmed 3 years later for the Renegade version. Christopher Lambert, Virginia Madsion and Michael Ironside returned to film that scene.
The insurance company made a very linear movie and not all the special effects was completed. Highlander wasn't intended to be linear. It was designed to have flashbacks.
Remember also, that Highlander 1 ended. It wasn't meant to have a sequel. So they had to rewrite themselves out of the corner they wrote themselves in. So someone decided that it would be cool that the immortals = aliens.

The film was shot almost entirely in Argentina before and after the country's economy crashed; as the local economy experienced hyperinflation, the film's investors and completion bond company took direct control of production and final edit, removing director Mulcahy and his creative influence while changing parts of the story.The resulting film contradicts the established canon of Highlander, in depicting immortals as aliens, featuring the inexplicable resurrection of Juan Sánchez-Villalobos Ramírez, and altering the concept of the "Quickening". So,that's why this movie is a total dumpster fire,the director edit makes it barely watchable,it removes all mention of aliens and the planet Zeist.
All true...save for the fact the immortals were always intended to be aliens. It wasn't the bond company's idea, it was in the shooting script - look for it online. That's the kind of creative decision an insurance company (that's what a bond company is) would never take: their only interest was protecting the investors' assets, not making a different movie out of whim, especially since everybody had already agreed on what the movie was going to be about long before shooting started (you cannot sell a sci-fi film to investors and then bring them a romcom: if they are paying for science-fiction, you have to give them science-fiction). The director and producers have been using the bond company as a way to justify themselves for decades by now. What the bond company did was shutting down production earlier to cut costs and re-editing the movie to make due with what they had, making it more messy. But the bad ideas (aliens, Ramirez being resurrected out of nowhere, Gen. Katana being a total idiot etc.) where there from the very beginning. It was a doomed project. A beautiful-looking disaster.
