Next week: Thriller sins & historical action sins.

Actually, using a coat / cloak as an off-hand parrying weapon is a historically accurate fencing technique. The idea is to trap your opponents blade long enough to stab him with yours. Ironically that may be the most accurate part of the first fight.

A little clarification about the rules (according to the first movie at least):
The immortal powers start after your first death.
That is why the villain stabbed him in the belly, to awaken his powers thus allowing him to try and take it afterward via decapitation.
That is also why the first belly stab was painful, he wasn't an immortal yet. Also, stabs will still hurt. They'd just heal faster but not Wolverine fast.
Also also, since the immortality starts from the first death, that is why Sean Connery is older than Connor. He died the first time at an older "age" (see what I did there?).

1:17 Actually, the sword and cloak technique is a fencing style detailed in Ragione di adoprar sicuramente l'Arme written by Italian fencing master Giacomo di Grassi in 1570. It was used to protect the off hand, to distract the opponent, and to bind his blade. It also matches the style of rapier the actor was using, so it was likely a deliberate choice. Of course none of that makes this sword fight any less ridiculous so you go ahead and sin that fight. Sin the ever living crap out of it.

    1) They are sent to earth from another dimension and reborn.

    3) their immortality is triggered upon a violent death. (If they never die a violent death they live normal lives)

According to the rules of the Game you can't ambush someone, you have to declare yourself to them before the fight. Only really, REALLY evil immortals that we see in the TV show ever try to behead someone from hiding. And holding the coat is a classic defence when in a sword or knife fight. Coat, cape, scarf, anything that you could use to absorb a blow or tangle up the sword hand so you get a free attack. As for the age of Ramirez, you become immortal when you suffer a sudden death, like being shot, stabbed, run over or whatever. You could, technically, be able to become immortal but still die of old age if you never suffer such an incident.

8:08 I'm gonna be 'that guy who corrects CinemaSins', and we all know that guy is awful, but I needed to correct this. When training with swords (or other martial arts), there's a concept called slow training. Basically, you move slowly through the various moves in order to train your muscle to do it correctly, then you speed it up later.

There is that. However, there was also an article about this movie in a magazine called _Cinefantastique_ around the time that may have a different explanation. Apparently Lambert's eyesight was so bad without his glasses that filming the swordfight scenes with him actually terrified the other actors...

Btw, watch closely the scene where Connor gets kicked out of the village, the villager extras really are kicking him up the arse; friend of mine knew one of the extras, Lambert apparently turned up late for shooting, kept them waiting for hours (he was by all accounts a bit of an arrogant prick, whereas Connery hung out with the extras and chatted, etc.) The director said make it look like they meant it, so they... did. :)

Actually @CinemaSins fighting with a Cape was a popular duelli technique here in Italy during the reinassaince. It was called "cappa e spada" literally "cape and sword". And yes the main goal was to distract your opponent with the cape and hit him. Thought Fasil didn't seem very expert in this fighting style.
