Seeing the fuzzy blue elf triple wielding sabers is a dream, I was so happy. Just one step shy of full swashbuckler mode.
His dialogue the way nightcrawler fights his mutant abilities they did him justice.
The reason why Bastion puts Magneto in a speedo is the same reason he shaves him and probably the reason he captured him in the first place; to humiliate him. Magneto is not only the mutant who poses the most danger to Bastion but also the one who most epitomises the idea that mutants will conquer humans, which Bastion is opposed to. We've seen that Bastion is clearly sentimental by the fact he uses his childhood home to trap the Summers, so humiliating his greatest enemy is entirely within his character.
He shoulda dressed him in a hospital smock w/ a barcode: easier to draw and much more poignant; I think whoever chose to man thong him got their wires crossed w/ slave references
I worry that setting off Mags was part of the plan the whole time.
Also it's clear someone on the creative team thinks Magneto is the zaddy of zaddies.

I take it as Morph doesn’t have proficiency with everyone else’s powers. If morph were to fight someone as that person, the original probably wins every time.
Not only would Bastion suss out a shapeshifter next to him right away, but Val’s monologue in this ep just hits so much better if it’s really her, not Mystique
I agree with you but I keep waiting for Mystique to show up. Her presence is felt in every episode. It’s getting suspicious.
@@mintybadger6905 With complete respect, I think the only folks who feel Mystique in every episode are the ones whose xmen exposure has been largely (not entirely! Just largely) influenced by the fox movies and her outsized role in them. She’s not usually that important or present a character, the fox movies made her seem like a much bigger player than she is

@@Icybubba true, and she might still show up for *that* storyline. That would make sense - it might even be inevitable, really. I just don’t see any argument for her being Val Cooper. Much more likely is that she shows up for the first time in this show either as a “hello, children” cliffhanger of sorts to Rogue and Kurt, or she shows up next season along with a host of other characters and concepts who could ostensibly have appeared by now but haven’t yet

X-Men'97 shows why X-Men works best as episodic TV and not so much the movies: The size of the cast. I'm glad you also pointed out that Wolverine is NOT heavily leaned on... because we've had that for almost TWENTY YEARS in the live action films, while every other mutant (not named Mystique) got nerfed, bankbenched or relegated to 1 moment per film based on star power or fan levels. Its great to see the everyone characterized accurately & get their moment per week instead of hoping every 3 years "Is (blank) gonna get their moment?"
Its just so satisfying.
I also appreciate how they’ve also been pairing Wolvie off when they’re featuring him because so many of his best moments have been when he’s being friends and comrades with other Xmen. They should make a limited series called ‘The Runt and the Fuzzy Elf.’
I found it hilarious that in the credits it listed "Latverian OZT Member" as if there was any mystery over who that was. Like Doom had the sharpest image on the zoom call, Latveria must have that good network infrastructure.

Maybe it was a tongue in cheek nod to the way the original writers and show runners slipped in cameos of other Marvel characters in the original series without getting official permission. I remember seeing somewhere that Larry Houston slipped in cameos like Hulk or Spider-Man in the original series by calling them things like " Green Mutant " or " Web mutant" in the scripts.
Every little detail in this show is just pure gold. Nightcrawler hits the wall and 2 swords hit the floor next to him and you're already hyped even though nothing has happened yet. Kurt & Logan just hacking up a room of sentinels was peak. Every action scene was peak. Cable of all people gets in on the one liners. "You have a Porsche?"
This show is a gift.

That Doom and Zemo cameo was crazy
This show is excellent at showing montages during monologues. Magneto flying up to the North Pole and starting his emp while the blonde lady was talking was such a good scene. They did something similar in the episode where storm wrote the letter to the team.

“Magneto was right” was originally uttered in the last episode of the original X-Men TAS series (1997), which was later adapted back into the comics as Eve of Destruction (2001). But it wasn’t until Grant Morrison’s run that it was truly popularized.
Am I the only one who’s frustrated by the assertion that “Magneto declared war?”
No, BASTION declared war. I’d love some feedback on this cause everyone I’ve heard talking about it has no problem repeating the episode’s sentiment that it was Magneto’s act that was the first act of war (which to me is ABSURD, given Genosha and the events of Ep8.)
Plus, Magneto’s “EMP” is very much an act of nonviolent defense.
Simple: Man sends killing machine after you, you turn off machine.
I get that his EMP might down every airplane in the sky, killing countless innocents, but the episode didn’t show this so I don’t think that’s the point. Maybe it will be elaborated on in subsequent episodes.
@kyledrury6396 yeah I'm really not sure what the fallout from that action is likely to be in universe. Seems like it could either kill a lot of innocent people, or stop a zombie apocalypse with minimal casualties
Also, when Wolverine says Magneto declared war, how did they know it was Magneto? Weren't they all under the impression that Magneto was a casualty in the Genosha massacre? If they knew he was alive and captured, you'd think they'd have been looking for him.

The thing that what makes what Magneto did so horrific wasn't just that those Prime Sentinels fell out of the air, but so did every plane on Earth. Every Hospital lost power Magneto killed thousands maybe millions of people.

Crazy theory, Charles MERGES with Magneto in the end and seals both of their consciences away in his mind and/or exoskeleton, circling back to the Onslaught tease and setting up a version of Onslaught for next season.
Fatal Attractions being one of DeMayo's favorite stories is kind of wild given how much better this show is than that story arc.
Xmen97 is some peak American cartoons. I'm a 30 year old man now and during this last episode I felt like a 13 year old kid again watching Xmen on a Saturday morning. Crazy how these show are running complex and dark story lines I'm loving it
I think Dazzler died in the Genosha Massacre.
After watching this episode, Bastion quickly became one of my favourite X-Men villains. Bastion is such a great villain in this show, and his plan is genius yet horrific to think about. His being a mix of Nimrod & Master Mold is wild. I love how charismatic he is with his belief that mutants supposedly take away humans' chances of the future, like a twisted, charismatic entrepreneur/salesman pitching his belief onto your average human middle-class guy, spreading more fear and insecurities about mutants to inevitably get them to act on said fears. What's even worse is that there is a level of truth and meta-commentary from his philosophy and how he manipulates blue-collar class racism and the bigotry normal humans create based on their fears. Not to mention the fact that such a big part of the population are secretly Human Sentinel sleeper agents and didn't even know it is SCARY ASF! These things can also reproduce and extend the human population, making the implications even more terrifying.
It's funny how Gyrich teased this fate in the first episode when he said, "Tolerance is extinction." This basically means that whenever humanity starts tolerating mutants, humans will inevitably believe they'll go extinct, therefore believing that whenever mutants start tolerating humans, mutants need to go extinct, hence what happened in Genosha.
That Wolverine and Nightcrawler fight scene is some of the best Western animation I have ever seen in a comic book show like GODDAMN, THE SCENE WAS PEAK! I loved seeing the first-person perspective of what it's like to teleport with Nightcrawler.
I love how much of an overprotective mom Jean was to Cable, and seeing the Summers family fighting together was cool and cute to watch. Dom Torretto would be proud.
It was really surreal watching Dr Cooper become so numb to the death and misery humanity creates to make mutants suffer, ultimately coming to accept that Magneto was right about humans. Magneto also officially declared war on humanity after all the pain and death he witnessed and sending that EMP blast around the world, which no doubt caused hundreds of other deaths, like planes falling out of the sky, reactors losing power, and God knows what else was such a scary yet overpowered move!
BTW, THE CAMEOS IN THIS EPISODE ARE INSANE; WE GOT SPIDERMAN, OMEGA RED, DOCTOR DOOM, BARON ZEMO, SILVER SAMURAI, etc...
I find it silly that he's just doing the same thing he's claiming to be stopping. Like he's so obviously a hypocrite that it's not even subtle or interesting.

The X-Men aren't superheroes tho. They're interesting characters, but they haven't been proper superheroes for a while now, and this show is transitioning them into their non-superhero phase.
Speedo Magneto is GOATed. I also can see Doom turning on Bastion because aint no way Doom is going to let somebody talk to him that dismissively like that. Bastion said he send memos next time, Doom thinking I’ll send Doom bots.
I still think Val is Mystique because of the way she was begging for Mags to say something to her, and how unsurprised Bastion was that she let him go.
When Wolverine said that Magneto declared war, I didn't take that as "war on the X-Men". I saw that as a war on Bastion and the sentinels. So I don't think the show will reset things so easily with Magneto et al vs the X-Men. I think they'll form a superteam to fight the common foe, Bastion. And then in the final episode, maybe Magneto will go off on his own to hint at forming his own team. But the show has done a lot of work for Magneto's arc just to make him the "bad guy" again.
Wolverine is 100x more durable in this than the original show. Love that.
They’re definitely pushing Scott and some of the others towards the kind of revolutionary characters that could make AvX really work. And one of my all time favorite moments in comics is Scott telling off Cap at the start of AvX

I think the speedo implies that Bastion continued his exposition shave on Magneto, until Magneto had a complete picture of how he was played, and Bastion had run out of body hair to snip.
The black bird crashing and then the Porsche coming out had me dying. I saw it come out and it looked exactly like a 911 or 993, and I said "ain't no way the just pulled out a Porsche" and cable said the same thing right after 🤣

It's so good. Classic X-Men. Loads of good storylines covered in brief. Good beats. Fun. Corny. Not so many plot holes. Faithful. Just really well done.
Another story route they could go down would be the Onslaught saga, because weirdly enough, Onslaught first appeared in the same comic as Bastion. That would be next up on the timeline.
Yeah, the events are in slightly different order, but if you want a REALLY dark progression: Professor X "kills" Magneto, is taken into government custody, Onslaught is formed, Onslaught takes out the Avengers and the Fantastic Four so there are fewer "why don't they get involved" moments, and Bastion convinces the government to go full on into internment camps etc. Especially if President Kelly ends up dead as some aspect of this story.
In a few minutes, this episode opened more the MAU than phase four ever did for the MCU
Also the political fallout of a mutant turning out all the power. This is going to be ammo and bastion's gun

I like that it's X-MEN first, with cameos and it's not apart of that convoluted MCU, where everything has to follow elements of the movies, bogging it down. It is it's own thing.
It's the same continuity as the original series, which means we can get Spider-Man and Avengers members from their 90s cartoon versions as cameos, like how we got Captain America in Ep. 7.
@@MugenHeadNinja You can get any Marvel character that they want to include, regardless of universe, MCU, continuity, timeline or year. But they chose the 90s Spider-Man animation design from the animated series, because it's considered the most popular and success animated series.

I just realised that Bastion's first art piece (crayon drawing) and his final artwork (the painting) are the same image: the destruction of the X-mansion from Sentinels.
I feel like in your Schism divide, the Cyclops team is just infinitely more interesting. I like how Cyclops had to convince Storm to stay with him so he could have her presence there to keep his morality in check.
Maybe I'm completely stupid about X-Men, but my thought was that Morph can replicate powers, but he's not as strong or powerful as the original version.
So far, it only seems to be physical powers, such as speed, strength, wings, durability, and perhaps even healing, but nothing external, like eye beams or weather manipulation, and yeah, only a fraction of the real thing, as well as using extensions of his body for swords and other weapons and equipment like Psylocke's swords, or Omega Red's wrist tendrils, and even they may not be the weapons true durability. If anything, they would probably massively hurt him if they were shattered or ripped from his body.
Been loving this journey of you not talking about X-Men 97' every week.

I hated AvX, one of the worst crossovers ever . I don’t get how writers as good as Hickman and Fraction came up with something so bad. It’s an Avengers story really - most of the mutants are victims of character assassination, especially Cyclops.
@@philcorrigan5641 I'll be honest I never read it 😂 But I love seeing the general concept get adapted into this animation style with these writers. They seem to be cherry picking the best bits of the source material and make it work

Pretty sure in the MODOK series, Sinister did sounded like Tim Curry voiced him (another voice actor dud a good Curry impression).

X-97 has been renewed for later seasons, right? I don't think the story would really continue well if we plomped this wolverine into another new group of X men.

I’m kinda confused on what Coopers involvement with bastion was. She wasn’t aware he was going to attack genosha, she wasn’t aware he was making human hybrid sentinels, and she doesn’t approve of any of it and thinks he’s a monster
So like what did she think was going on? I thought at first she had just been maybe abducted and brought to the base, but her apologizing to magneto probably means she was allied with bastion to some degree
I’m not just sure what I’m supposed to take away as far as her involvement goes
My best guess is that Cooper was likely involved in the FOH plan to depower Magneto at the UN trial as well as financing other technology that Forge worked on for the government to detain mutants (remember in Forge's cabin, there is a photo he took with Bastion)
What if Sinster is the Herny Calville role? Just throwing that out there.
hearing the Demayo said Fatal Attraction is his favorite comic is just wild.... NOBODY says that is their favorite comic, people only know it because its the issue when Magneto rips Wolverine's adamantium out of his body....
And when Xavier put Magneto in a catatonic state, setting up Xavier's slow dark turn until he became Onslaught.

I think we're getting the Magneto mind wipe from Fatal Attractions which plants the seeds for Onslaught.
I think that the X-Men 97 writers are making the same mistake with Morphe that the Star Trek the Next Generation writers made with Worf. It's the idea that if an opponent can one shot them then they must be dangerous. The problem with this idea is if you don't show Morphe being badass to balance this out they just look weak.
Yeah he needs some more wins.
Maybe they're saving it for the season finale. So far he's been beaten by everyone he fought. Managed to throw a few hits but nothing major. I really hope they amend this cause it's getting annoying. I get that not every character needs to be a badass all the time, but at least every once in a while, otherwise it's just like you said, they just look weak and need saving all the time

Way back in Uncanny #150 or so, Magneto also alters the Earth's magnetic field to limit the range of Charles' telepathy (and maybe teleportation as well; it's been a while).
Magneto causing EMP blast across the world for sure killed lots of people who were in planes.

Only thing I’d suggest is story wise I think Roberto has to play a huge role at the end. The Roberto/Jubilee story has been running parallel to the main story the whole time and you’ve got to think at some point they’re going to come together and everything Jubilee has been leading Roberto through and teaching him is going to matter. He’s a possibility for the character who sacrifices himself to fix the big problem for the season.
The opening bit gets funnier each time he say “I know what yer thinkin” 😂 bravo

To be fair to Morph, there are thousands of superpowered individuals that they can turn into with entirely different power sets which function entirely differently from each other, and they have little to no experience with them. It's literally like every superhero origin story where they have that awkward period where they're still figuring out their powers, like Spider-Man swinging into the side of a building or Human Torch trying to fly and falling into a snow bank, but that's every single time Morph takes a new form. Should they maybe try and get some practice with a few particular transformations? Yes. Can they? No. As we saw in a previous episode, Magneto and Rogue had the Danger Room booked pretty solid. 😆
Also, I'm assuming that Morph doesn't get like the full power set of anyone they turn into. More like a watered down version. I imagine it's kind of like Forge's power where if he can build a machine to do anything, but he has to have some basic knowledge about how to do it first. Morph's probably works in similar way in which they have to see them used and have some idea of how the powers work in order to do it. Like I know what fire feels like. I can see wind bend the flame. So I have some idea how Pyro's powers work, but I don't know exactly how he does it. Like what does being invulnerable feel like? I know what not being hurt feels like. You can throw a pillow at me and I don't get hurt, but I still feel the pillow hit me. It's probably like that. Like Morph can turn into Juggernaut and be somewhat tough, but are they truly invulnerable? Probably not. I imagine it's like you're constantly flexing hundreds of muscles at once, both mentally and physically, and trying to maintain concentration on them. But in a fight, you might flinch for a second, and then you lose it.
I think I read or heard Demayo state Morph can duplicate any physical powers of others. Thus why he's been Colossus, Juggernaut, Magik (With no powers used), Lady Deathstrike, Pietro, etc.

I thought a lot about the "Val = Mystique" theory:
At first I was skeptical since I took her hatred for Magneto at face value. I thought she genuinely had reasons to hate him, and so she couldn't be Mystique since last time we saw them together (ending of season 4) they had no problem working together.
Then I started thinking about the possibility that she was secretly Mystique and she didn't hate Magneto at all, but was just playing the part of a mutant hater to push him into declaring war on humanity. She expected him to fight the soldiers who arrested him, but he surrendered peacefully. She expected the UN to condemn him, but he instead was pardoned. And then he was declared ruler of Genosha. With every step he got closer to Xavier's dream, and away from the mutant-human war she wanted. There was also that surprised face she made when he talked about marrying Rogue, the only person Mystique ever gave some semblance of care for. So this theory had a lot of possibility.
But episode 5 also made me doubt it at lot. First there was the fact that she was constantly around two powerful telepaths: Emma and Madelyn. And even if Madelyn has a personal rule of not prying into people's head without a good reason, we see Emma has no qualms about using her powers that way in this same episode. It is also possible that Emma knew Val was secretly Mystique and didn't care, waiting to see where she was going with that. But then we have the attack on Genosha and we see lots of mutants being vaporized by sentinels around Val while she was being completely ignored. It's possible Mystique can mask her powers from the sentinels, but it's another piece of evidence against the theory.
And finally we have episode 8 when I find it really difficult to still believe in this theory. Mystique was shown in the past working for Apocalypse, but out of self-preservation, not her own personal convictions, and she showed her true self when she was alone with him. Now I don't see why she would work with Bastion. If everyone else believe she is Val Cooper, I don't see why she would join them. And if everyone know she is Mystique and are forcing her to cooperate like Apocalypse, then this episode would have been the best opportunity to show it by showing herself in her true form in front of Bastion and Sinister.

Morph only gets the PHYSICAL powers associated with transformations (as is hinted by the end credits stat card). So he could transform into Scott but not get his eye beams while still transforming into Quicksilver and getting his superspeed.

Given how Bishop & Cable were separated, how they worked in Age of Apocalypse, & mentioning of prime timelines & moments in time that happen no matter, I can see AoA being setup at the end.
Maybe it's because the first X-Men story I read was Fatal Attractions (because I'm old and it was new when I was a kid) but I keep getting the vibe that they're setting up a combination of Onslaught and combining AvX and Bloodties for a future season.

Every episode has some character being the protagonist. Episode 8 had these two team-ups, the Summers and Wolverine + Nightcrawler which were gooood... Specially the 6+3 snikt sounding reasons to resist and whoooaa.. Traveling with Nightcrawler is triiipppyyy🤓

I love how XM97 is making characters like Gambit, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Jubilee, and Storm feel so cool and authentic. IMO these are the ones they should be prioritizing for the live action shit since they haven't gotten the love they deserve!!
In Fatal Attractions, the Magneto barrier was earth saying 'you're not allowed to take our mutants.' That's what set him off.

Honestly i think this show is one of the best things on tv in quite a while, it truly is spectacular, and on e the resasons I love your vids is you always break down and show your work and passion for it. And this show is also just filled with little references to comics ranging from Claremont & John Byrnes Storm to the Attack on Genosha from New X-Men. And since he’s made his debut cameo in really hoping in season 2 we get an episode where Doctor Doom tries to court Storm. Also there’s been talks abuzz about an X-Men ‘97 movie, I can only imagine the pitches we could get for that.
Wow, that was a fantastic episode. Not the Genosha ep, but really cool. So glad to see Nightcrawler with the triple sabers, I do so love the fuzzy blue elf (torn between him and Gambit being my faves). I would love to see a version of the Mutant Messiah and related plotlines playing out (I like Hope and the stories focusing on her were fun), but I don't see that working without decimation first.
Wait. Magneto is still a hero in my eyes. Obviously that may change once we see the next couple episodes. But he saved ALL the mutants around the world from the human-sentinels threat! I have absolutely zero sympathy for the techno-zombie bigots who died. They chose evil. They were monsters. Even before Bastion got his hands on them.
Unleashing an EMP on the world would kill ALOT of people. Think of anybody on a plane. Anybody with a pacemaker. Anybody on life support. Most people undergoing surgery at the time. I'm probably forgetting more than a few scenarios to.
this is war. innocent mutants were killed. magneto chose to protect his people. but that has also killed a shit ton of bystander humans. he's not a hero , just the protector of mutants

I genuinely don't know how Nando watched episode 8 and came away thinking "yeah, Magneto's gonna be the villain again". Val Cooper looked us IN THE EYES and said Magneto was right, you don't write something like that for no reason. Not to mention the not whatsoever subtle messaging in the show about how Charles' vision was flawed and did not help mutants (e.g.; the group getting crushed under his statue in Genosha). I was going insane the whole video every time he mentioned Magneto.
I think, especially with Charles back, we're going to see a schism in the X-Men between the ones that side with Magneto, definitely Cyclops and Rogue they've been getting radicalised throughout the series, and those that side with Charles, probably Wolverine, Jean (gotta have that interpersonal conflict), and Beast. Morph would probably go wherever Logan does, and I'm not so sure where Storm would side.
Either that or all out war between humanity and mutants, possibly with more cameos or bigger roles for other superheroes and villains on either side cause I think the lead writer said that Spider-Man would have a bit of a bigger role in the coming episodes (I could be wrong), and all those other cameos kinda point to it as well. (begging that they have Spidey fight alongside the Mutants he would NEVER do them like that)
The follow up question to "Magneto was right," is, "about what?" To my mind, he was right about his diagnosis, but his prescription? He's never quite figured that out. At this point, we have to acknowledge that mutant islands are not gonna work out. I'd realllllly be surprised if it ended with "We just had a mass of mutants slaughtered because they were all together on one island, so let's put a mass of mutants together on an island." That just really would be a baffling choice for me. I don't see why that would be the natural conclusion and I don't expect to see it.
I'm still wondering what Bastion was doing with Magneto. I don't think he was just keeping him prisoner and shaving him just because. He did something to him, I think.
When I saw him shaving magneto, I immediately thought that Bastion was going to cut his hair, dress him up in his classic magneto costume, and use him as a puppet to be the big villain while he works behind the scenes.
If there’s a season 2 i feel like it’ll be heavily inspired by the House of X storyline; where we see a radicalized Charles Xavier aligned more with Magneto and using the powers of Krakoa to revive dead mutants.
They've already confirmed seasons 2 and 3 so you might be right!
Personally I wouldn't mind seeing the stress of all this and Xavier and Magneto coming together to create Onslaught, that'd be a hell of a cliffhanger
They have to do the "Magneto removes Wolverine's metal" arc. They're also clearly setting Scott up as the sacrifice.
Beast saying that mutants will take over in 100 years was a surprise, so I think it's going to have to lead to "No More Mutants" sooner than later because they've kind of crossed into areas where there's no turning back
