  • Hello pen friends! I just recently acquired my first ever Pelikan Souverän pens after some extensive reviews and research and I think these two are the perfect Pelikans to dive into the Pelikan world. I will go over the specs of both of these gems and share the writing samples so you can have a good feel for how EF Pelikan nibs write in both the M1000 and M605 models. I really enjoy both experiences and can't wait to continue exploring more Pelikan pens in the future!
    Feel free to jump to any part of the video as I have created timestamps to easily navigate to whichever information you need. I hope you guys find this helpful. If you have any comments, questions, suggestions, or things to add, please let me know down in the comments and I will add it to my description box about Pelikans! I welcome feedback and constructive criticism, but please remember to keep comments appropriate and in good nature! As always, thank you so much for watching.

      Hey DDawg! You’re very welcome ☺️ I’m so happy you found this helpful. I had the exact same issue and thought around this, so I made sure to answer that question and make it a resource for everyone. Hope you enjoy your M1000 EF (or another nib size) when you get one :) Thanks so much for watching.

      @@KenchanKrafts Cheers. Unfortunately your video confirmed my fears - the EF nib is also comically wet and broad like the other sizes. I am coming to the points of accepting that I'll probably need to have an EF or F nib stubbed if I want anything remotely fine-writing. The M800 EF nib is a nice size for me (Japanese FM/M) it just seems to jump up majorly with the M1000. I did notice you wrote you the main sample pretty heavy handed and I write very lightly so perhaps it won't be as broad if I'm not spreading the tines as much.

    • @KenchanKrafts
      @KenchanKrafts  Před měsícem +1

      @@DDawg1144 haha yes, I do have a heavy hand when writing, 20 years of writing in school with pencils that I have to unlearn with fountain pens. But hopefully the thinner lines before the slight pressure writing gives you an idea of its thinnest lines when written with a light touch. Paper also affects this line since tomoe river paper absorbs ink pretty nicely and lines tend to be broader on here than like clairefontaine paper. The alternative too is to have your M1000 grounded to a specialty grind that fits your writing style. But I know this isn’t accessible to everyone. If you ever get a chance though, JC from The Nib Tailor does a beautiful pindot grind that restricts ink flow just enough to still flow well but comes out at a very thin point. I really enjoyed it since I like thinner lines sometimes. It’s a really great option for a thin nib grind. JC explained it as the grind before needlepoint.

    Very good comparison. The M605 is a great pen. It´s not really tiny. It´s the same with wrist watches. Over time they got bigger and bigger and once you are used to the bigger ones, what was normal in the past looks tiny today. The Pelikan M800/805 is the sweet spot for me in the Souverän line, it has a comparable size to the Lamy Safari. And I agree, Pelikan nibs sizes are rather on the bigger side. I have several ones and F is more like like an M.

      @KenchanKrafts  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Thanks, Bo! You're right, we've become used to larger pens and prefer that as time passes. As I'm using my m605 more now, it feels pretty normal! I just couldn't get over how small I perceived it to be the first moment I opened the box. I am now on the hunt for the perfect first m800 to add to my flock of Pelikans. They're very great pens! And because of how broadly their tipping gets, I believe I will only be collecting EFs and Fines. But I'll definitely like to try out broads and double broads at Pen shows just to get a feel for them.

    If I were persuing a Pelikan, it would be the M1000. The size is much better, cleaning is easier, and the nib is beautiful. Congrats on another grail and thanks for sharing with us! I hope you share again after it has been bedazzled with raden. 😍

    Hi Lao! Pelikan is very popular in my pen club due to most of the members attending the yearly Pelikan Hub meetings that happens on September 22 all around the world. So happy you are trying non Leo pens😂…Pelikan are known for their piston filling system and their nibs but that’s why Pelikan pens will last decades. One of the pen club members will be bringing his Pelikan pens for me to try and he wants to get into more modern Pelikan pens. But for me I love the the classic Souveran…hunting for a Brown Black and a vintage Green black. Thanks for sharing!

I always knew Pelikans were good...I just didn't know they were THIS GOOD :D And I can see why the giant price tag on these now...but...so expensive!!! Can't wait for you to try them at your pen meet! The Pelikan Hub here in Minneapolis was...private, so I didn't know where it was. I know you had to register, but some hubs allowed the public penthusiasts to join if you forgot to register, so I was very sad I couldn't join mine. However, my friend's hub was public and they had tons of extra goodies, so she got me some Pelikan hub goodies!!

    Great comparison. From my experience, The TR paper makes the lines look thicker, kind of like the onionskin paper. If you try the same pen on Clairfontaine paper, you'll find it does write much finer comparatively.
    Another thing I have noticed from my experience is that the tines on the EF m1000 easily get out of sorts, making it write much broader, or toothier. And it is hard to put back together. I have learned overtime that for F and EF nibs of M1000, I must exert pretty much no pressure. That is how I can get a fine line from M1000/1005 EF. Cheers.

    • @KenchanKrafts
      @KenchanKrafts  Před 9 měsíci +2

      Hi Shak! Thank you for your lovely words!! :) I do have clairfontaine paper as well and I agree with you, the coating on that paper makes my lines so much thinner! It's fascinating haha! But I do like the way TR paper absorbs the ink to make the lines thicker. Clairfontaine paper can make some of my pens not feel super smooth (hence, the line width decrease), so I don't really like that sometimes. Thank you for sharing your experience on the 1000, I do feel like that could definitely happen for me, too. I do hope they don't misalign for me anytime soon, but I do love the line variations that it makes and I'm not too bummed out about it being thicker than most Fines. It's an experience I have accepted :D I have many other EFs to work with if I really need a thin line, but as you said, no pressure at all is also a possible way to use the m1000 for lovely thin strokes! :)

      @KenchanKrafts  Před 10 měsíci +2

      Thank you, Jean! And yean, I agree. If the M600 could be 250 dollars, they'll get more buyers, but they probably might not make the profit they are going for. Absolutely stunning pen if it was 250 USD. But 450-600 for an M600 with how small of a pen it is, it is sad and unaffordable for most of us. Hope you can try one out someday, though! It's such a cute classic looking small-medium-ish sized pen, and that much I enjoy about it aside from the writing experience :)

      Hi Lorelei! Yes, it can be RADENED!! XD I saw it on Instagram and I was bedazzled, I needed it, too!! I will need to think of a design and if I want maki-e on it or just mother of pearl raden shells. The cost is $350+ depending on design and the artist. It takes about 3-4 months (after the queue/wait-list) since they'll put layers of urushi on top of the layers of raden and let it dry over that period of time. Also will need to be sent over to their shop (most of which are in Japan or overseas). XD I'm super excited about this project ^_^ Thanks for watching!

      Yes I write with my broad nibs in my journals, but that is a problem because I can't use an A5. It's too small, and getting into A4s are expensive, and a bit too big. I like to have a journal that'll be about 18 cm wide. Not easy to find that with fp friendly paper.
      Plus, I like a super smooth nib, and the broader you go, generally the smoother it is. My M1000 broad is super duper smooth. No feedback. Even my mediums have just a hint of audible feedback. Even my steel Pelikan broad is smooth.

      Haha you are so silly! I appreciate your friendship very much! Pelikan EF is best nib size for daily writing! F is very juicy for a fine! But it’s great for drier inks and inks that need a broad nib but when you don’t want a really broad nib to use, Pelikan F will show off lots of inks off very well! Pilot F and Sailor MF are about the same! Sailor and Pilot M is almost the same as Western M (very close to an Italian medium or jowo medium). :) I suggest a Pelikan M600 EF 😂

      @KenchanKrafts  Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's a great question, Sijal! You're lucky I'm at my desk and this question piqued my interest! I just did a writing test with them both. The Pelikan EF writes just a tiny bit thinner than the 823 Medium, but otherwise, they would write very similar line width with the same ink. I have a drier ink in my Pelikan at the moment. I prefer the Pelikan M1000 EF nib to the Custom 823 M. I would rate the feedback of the Pelikan a 3/10 (1 being no feedback, 10 being too much feedback) and the Custom 823 a 2/10. Both are smooth and the feedback feels amazing on both, but I think I like the Pelikan just because it is a touch louder of a feedback. The EF Pelikan can write western Fine when you write lightly up to a Western B when flexed. I like it!
