- Hello everyone! I'm so excited to share my review and thoughts on the Platinum Shape of Heart - Chai Latte that's had everyone talking since Valentines. I have many 3776s and I love that model in general - it feels great in the hand and they have a pretty good variety of styles and colorways! Got this Chai Latte too and I have to say I absolutely adore it.
It’s such a great pen and so easy to adore with how delicate and beautiful it looks. I think that if it wasn’t rose gold, it wouldn’t be as pretty so I’m very happy with the overall combination of colors. I’m happy to hear you agree, the 3776s are so comfortable and the nib writes amazing to boot! Happy you love your Chai Latte too! :)

Exactly, I was really disappointed with the brown too. I wish the brown cap matched the pictures.
MHM!! AMEN! Preach! XD They deceived us. I know only that picture that I shared showed the more brown tone, and the rest of the pictures were more of this neutral taupe color, but that's still wrong of them to post two very different colors to sell this pen.
I am (im)patiently waiting for my first Platinum 3776 to arrive! 😂 This video made me even more excited.

I was anxiously awaiting your video. Very informative and great review. I’m glad you like yours. I do understand why some are disappointed in the lightness of the pen and the ‘plastic’ feel, but that’s the part I love most. My hand doesn’t feel tired after lots of writing and it has a unique feeling. I adore mine and the ink is a beauty. I paid similar to you so maybe why I’m okay with it too. I would NOT pay 430$. I agree the marketing pictures were off with color, but still like this color too. The feedback in mine is amazing as well. I look forward to how you ink it in the future.
Hi Diana! You're right, I don't mind the weight, I think I actually like it overall since I even get cramps from my 26g Sailors in longer writing sessions. That's why I put its weight in the pro, I don't think the weight of the pen is a con necessarily, but rather a preference. While I prefer a slightly heavier pen (if this was 26g total or if the body was 16g, I would have thought it was perfect), but the lightness of this pen lends to much better writing sessions with less cramping. So I think in the long run, I will really appreciate its lightness as I like it posted. I have said in my other videos, "Most pens are made of some form of plastic, but they don't have to feel like plastic" xD and I think that Platinum failed in that aspect here, whether they intended to or not. At this price point, for sure we want a luxury feel and I think that's pretty fair. I always try to buy pens that are around "my value" so I don't feel too disappointed if it's not perfect - therefore, I try not to buy pens at their retail value! Goodpenlife and Appelboom did great by us with this one hehe ♥ If I had bought this at 430, I would most likely just feel slightly dissatisfied and keep it since it's still very beautiful. @@KenchanKrafts Yes to all of this. It’s definitely got a very plastic feel and I agree… we want to feel like we are holding a luxury item. I may not have been happy either at the US price point. I definitely think it’s the matte finish on this one which really makes it feel like inexpensive plastic like you mentioned in your video. I had thought it too at first, but now I’m just fascinated how different it is from other pens. It’s pretty to look at and it writes like a dream so it’s a win win 😁
It is definitely a dream to write with. I think it writes better than my Leonardo steel nibs, so that's a plus! But it definitely doesn't write on the level of my Aurora Volterra - I wrote with all the pens on my top tray on my desk, and this pen came in 2nd for best writing experience + comfort! Also 2nd most delicately beautiful xD

I’m thinking about the pink or the calico celluloid platinums but I need to see them in person first to be sure I want to spend that much money on them XD plus I’ll most likely try to find it on sale or cheaper directly from Japan. Thanks for all of the nib comparisons. I have a Platinum shape of heart in the black with a fine nib. I got a medium nib in the Chai Latte. It is on the way and almost here!! (I wish I could have gotten it tuned! I really like that Appelboom offers that...)

Great review! I considered it for a nano second but I already have the Ivory Shape of Heart so really did not need another one. The material looks similar to the Ivory I have and I feel it's more of a satin than a matte. Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, I would agree it is more satin rather than matte, but their description is "matte blasted" so it probably is what this material feels like. I saw this next to the Ivory and I will agree, it's basically the same colored body xD Thanks for watching! You did right to not have another one, I don't think I will need any future shape of heart either. I think this is a pen that's "just 1 to meet each person's tastes".

i originally got it in EF and then emailed to request a fine nib. thank goodness because I think the EF would've been too fine. The Fine is already borderline too fine. Very helpful review.

I watched the entire video, and I completely agree that this pen is wildly overpriced at $430. I found it on EBay from a Taiwanese seller for $350, which is still about $50 too much but I love the color way so much, I’ll pay that little extra.

@@moonlight5050 I probably have more than enough notebooks (as I have bought so many from Notebook Therapy but they aren't fountain pen paper), and I don't have enough shelf space for paper. I'll have to make new space haha. XD I can help with Pilot VP nib sizes, but the Dialog I will need to look into those at my pen show to have any info to help discuss with haha! I hope you'll find them at your show and write with them to keep for your records.

@KenchanKrafts Hey....had a fab day at the pen show 😀 Picked up some ink obviously....the KWZ Beefeater Red (a limited edition only at shows it appears) which is a lovely deep red with a hint of cherry, and a Noodlers Dragon Fire which is a dark orange. Then 5x2ml samples. I did try a Vanishing Point as I was chatting to a lady and I mentioned it and she had one in her hand..!!! But also chatting to a dealer who has a shop not too far away who have the Pilot range in stock. Also found a chap who can fix an old pen which was my mum's when she was a child, and it would be nice to get that fixed up 👍👍👌 So a very productive day all round 😁😁👌👌

Congrats on your new purchase! I’m a Pilot fanboy, but I bought a Preppy, and I must begrudgingly admit that I LOVE the mild feedback feel, the slight seesaw flex of the nib and the fine nib, which is right between Pilot’s steel medium and nib widths. What scares me from being a Century 3776 is the horror stories regarding Platinum’s nib QC issues. Did you personally have any issues before?
Hey Chi! I have had 5 platinum pens through my collection and none of them have been tuned badly. My century Fine writes very smoothly surprisingly, for how thin it is, and it writes thinner than my steel platinum fine. I haven’t heard the platinum QC issues and I feel that from my experience, Sailors have the most problematic QC of the 3 Japanese brands. But of my 16 Sailors that have come into my collection, only 2 were bad. I only have 3 Pilots and they all write great. The feedback of the platinums are indeed very very pleasant! :) it’s like a softer pencil lead feel, while Sailors have a sharp pencil sound to it.

I bought 2 of these one in medium and one in fine. The fine has a special edition ink called heart of latte and it’s very thin and dry. I’ll be keeping the medium with the normal earth brown ink.
Oh, that's interesting! I did not know the Fine nib came with a totally different ink color. Also that's so ridiculous that they would pair the fine with a drier ink. The medium Platinum nibs can handle slightly drier inks, so did you put that ink in your medium to test it out? I would love to see the color of the heart of latte, that sounds like a beautiful name, but definitely would need to put that in a wetter pen.

Nice review, you always give an honest opinion! It seems to me that the name of this pen…Chai Latte….. helps sell it as tea, coffee themes are so en vogue at this time. Too pricey for me though ! ( just to let you know I finally gave in and ordered the Sailor Harvest Moon 😀🤣🤪 )
Yay!!!! Harvest moon is super elegant and timeless though. Everyone’s first and I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say they didn’t like it. And yeah…the naming of pens after tea and coffee really brings people to buying these pens. I just wished it was a bit closer to color of what they name the pens after if they are going to be doing such a thing xD

Thank you Lao, I like your review. I was very disappointed with the acquisition of Chai Latte. It came right after my Aurora what even made it worse. The material feels exactly like written in the comments: plastic-y and cheap. I am not an expert, this is my second Platinum 3776, but I feel the difference between the two of them. Having said that I am not going to sell it. I love the crystals in the finial :). And I actually like the more taupe color of the cap. I did not know that F nib came with a dedicated ink. There is only written ‘mixable ink’ on the ink bottle.
Thank you, Aleksandra! Glad the review was helpful and we had points we agreed upon! I think the Fine with dedicated ink is a rare occurrence? Someone else said that they also got a different ink with their Fine nib but it wasn't bought at a retailer. The crystals on the finial are probably my favorite part of the pen, but the rose gold trims really bring the whole pen together. The taupe color is not bad at all, it matches this pen so well, fits my aesthetic just fine (since it's still in the brown/neutral range), and the pen is light enough to write without any discomfort and heavy enough to not feel completely like plastic once posted. And I agree with you that when we compare any other pen to our Aurora...it's never going to be fair xD I have since sold my Esterbrook because I compared its resin to my Aurora...not a fair comparison, but a necessary comparison for my collection haha.
Great comprehensive video, Lao. I love thé Platinum most of the Japanese made for, then undecided between Pilot and Sailor.
Right now 3776 in celluloid is what I’m keeping an eye out for. I would easily talk myself into buying that with a discount. But I’m also thinking of getting another regular 3776 châtres blue or Bourgogne.
Thank you, Tawallah! :D I feel that Platinums have the best of both worlds where Sailor sits at one end (high feedback, precise) and Pilot at the other end (ultra smooth, low feedback). If I find the Sakura or Calico celluloid on a huge sale, I'd get one of them, too! :D You must really love the Platinum Centuries if you're going for the Chatres blue or Bourgongne. Do you have the Laurel green, too? :)

I have a Shape of Heart in black and I adore it. I’d get the ChicLatte, too but just can’t at the moment.
I think having one would be good enough for this type of pen since the color changes are quite subtle among the 3 that they've come out with. This one is very similar to the Ivory one so if you have that one already, it feels bad if this one is considered an upgrade to the Ivory. Glad you're enjoying your Black and Rose gold one :)
I am disappointed by the color. The pictures looked more pinky brown. But the universe must have not wanted me to not have this one because the first time I ordered it I had a cone to Jesus moment and cancelled and then the second time it was cancelled for me because they ran out. I see a lot of people being disappointed with this pen so I’m glad I didn’t get it. Not worth the price either. I might get one of the celluloid because I like a little more weight and the celluloid feels amazing in the hand. I had a chance to hold the calico. Absolutely beautiful.

I’m glad you feel good about the things that happened now and can stick with the pens that feel better in person already! 🥰🥰 by more taupe do you mean more grey or more brown? Lololl!!! Because that color name basically means brown grey but leans more grey so I’m assuming you wanted the cap to be more grey? Some people wanted it to be more pink, which is an undertone of taupe. It’s quite an interesting color since it photographs slightly different in different lighting.

I got mine last Friday and absolutely love it. It's my first platinum 3776 so I have nothing to compare it to which may be to my benefit with the weight situation. I do adore how it writes, I got a M nib and I inked mine with Ferris Wheel Press Oyster Hour 😊
That's good that you didn't have a baseline! My first Platinum Century was the Laurel green and it was one of the most comfortable pens I've ever written with and like you, I had nothing to compare it with. Then I started noticing a lot of people saying Platinum Centuries have poor body quality but one of the best nibs, and I can agree to that, but the Century's pen body does it's job without being anything more than it needs to be. So for this Shape of Heart - a lot of people expected more out of the body due to the cost of the pen being almost as expensive as Platinum's celluloid pens. I know, more info than I need to share hahah!! But LET'S ENJOY our Chai Latte! It's so beautiful and a smooth writer! ♥Oyster Hour is a great color for this pen! Nice choice :)

Really great review! Thank you- your color comparison was very helpful. I‘d love that light coffee/tea color, too so much! But when you say goodbye to that promo pic, the actual pen color is nice.
The look of the more matte is prettier than glossy - don’t know about the easier staining.
I‘m not planning on an 3776 in future- I’m too scared of an imperfect nib right out of the box (had bad luck) and I don’t want to pay more for tuning/smoothing in this price range… I will wait for a good offer of a retailer where I could return a „bad nib“ 😅
I agree, I do love the matte feeling than if it were glossy. There’s some materials/finishes where glossy looks great, but since this is a solid ivory off white body, it looks good as matte! I’m sorry you were unlucky with yours. I’ve only had 5 Platinums and they all write pretty great out of the box. This one has been tuned, but I think even before that happened it most likely wrote great! And yeah if you don’t think about its original photos, the pen looks great in the video! @@MrsAlchemist I think I definitely still prefer Sailor nibs over Platinum nibs, but at the end of the day, they both feel soo good to me, I don't dislike one over the other by any means. But I'm starting to experience how paper plays such a big role. Sailor nibs don't feel so great on Iroful paper, which I just started trying out.
@@KenchanKrafts Thank you, Lao. I heard that „if you like Pilot nibs, Sailor and Platinum is not for you“ (because of the „stiffness“ of the gold nibs). So I love the Pilot VP but I‘m just very curious how a Platinum gold nib feels and perhaps I will enjoy it…? ☺️

I really like mine but in general I love the 3776 and I wanted one with a different color than the usual 4. My white 3776 feels light when not posted too, but I don’t mind that. The nibs are great though
I know for sure I'll appreciate the lightness of the pen when I do longer writing sessions! Since the grip is perfect, the lightness of the pen will help with reducing cramps! So that's why I still feel that the lightness of the pen is a Pro rather than a con. They are an absolute joy to write with - I sold my Laurel green Medium because it was a boring look for me, so now I am very happy with this one swapping in for the Laurel green :) Thanks for sharing your experiences with the 3776s!
I have the black one and just couldn’t justify paying that amount of money for the Chai Latte… also it was sold out, even for preorders… which I‘m not mad about. :) Enjoy !
Oh, how much did you pay for your black shape of heart? :D I agree, I missed out on using my credits for the Atlas pre-order...that sold out in just 2 hours. So I had to use my juicy discount code at Appelboom to make it go to a reasonable price. $430 is just so overpriced! But of the 3, I am most happy with this once because of how dainty and delicate it looks. Very fitting for a shape of heart.

@@Heidejournal Oh my goodness!!! So that's straight from Japan in the grey market, such a smart buy! I wonder if that pen lost its value over time or if that has always been the grey market value. Totally worth the wait to pay 200 less! haha
It's a pretty pen and I was expecting it to be more of a lighter brown color. I think it's going to be a long while before I spend $400 on a pen if ever. So in the meantime I'll just enjoy watching others write with theirs.
Exactly!! It should have been a lighter brown, otherwise, this is basically the SMALLEST color change from the 2nd edition - Ivory. However, the rose gold on this one is what saved the taupe cap for me. I think it's fine to live vicariously through others for now ^_^ I do that for some pens in my wish list, too. Maybe someday this pen will go on sale for 200! :)

I think there are supposed to be three heart pieces in the finial of this one! I have yet to see even one in mine. 😅They're buried in there.
Yeah, there should be 3 per their official description. But I think the first one only had 1? And maybe the 2nd one had 2 hearts. So are they just increasing the amount of hearts per each release? XD That would be way too many hearts to throw into the cap and seems unreasonable since it should just be 1-2 hearts from the nib. I'll let you know if I find all 3 haha!

It's such a pretty pen! I finally hunted one down but couldn't bring myself to click Buy. I agree. Seems overpriced for a plastic-y pen. Different materials would have made a big difference!
I totally wished they had used the same body material or texture finish that they did with the Silhouette Nagasawa Century 3776, that one looked great and felt great, but it was not in a colorway I'd pick up a lot. I am sad it did not feel like that one, but it looks absolutely stunning regardless and it writes how I love it, so that was enough for me ^_^ If you could hunt this one down for $250, would you have gone for it (or how much would you pay for it)?
@@KenchanKrafts Yes I would have purchased it at $250 for sure. I found it for $340 but not in stock at that vendor. I still paused but not as much 😂. Who knows.. It may still make it's way to me one day...

As you can tell, I love the pen, and I love how it writes. Medium really is my go-to Platinum. I cannot with how fine the Fine is. It really shouldn't be that fine!! Perhaps I should try a wetter red ink in it - so I don't pass off on Platinum Fines just yet.
@@KenchanKrafts Lao!!! Surprisingly, my Chai Latte fine writes a bit broader than my other 3776 pens w a fine nib. Maybe the ink? I’m using On Inks Leather Patina (Manila-based brand), and it seemingly produces the same strokes as my Ivoire in medium. One thing I love about Platinums though is they write well out of the box. 🤍
Also, am w you on the marketing photos! Misleading. Nonetheless, our pens are still beautiful.
I’m disappointed with the feel of the material and the color. I thought it was going to feel more like the material used in the Platinum x Nagasawa 3776 Silhouette. It feels cheap compared to the Nagasawa one!
Oh no, did you get one as well? I was expecting it to feel like the Nagasawa Silhouette, too!! But I only felt that pen at the SF pen show and don't remember how exactly it feels, but I do remember it feeling luxurious and the body had more texture to it for being matte. This one is a very very smooth matte texture - like someone said, it's more satin than it is matte. Let's hope Platinum realizes whatever they did with the Nagasawa pen should be utilized in future matte Shape of Hearts. Or if they come out with a light brown Nagasawa type body, I will grab it! :)
I was going to get this pen but decided that for the price, it looked cheap (thought it may not be) - it’s the matte that makes it look like that to me. So I decided against it
