Around this time two years ago, me and a friend took a heroic dose of acid and during the peak, this song came on and I swear it broke me. You are correct, this is more "scary". I like to call these "sinister". I think it's a style on it's own. Its almost like people prefer stuff when its more "evil". Skulls, dark cave, walking on the woods at night. Thats what this song feels like it's trying to convey.

Tbh most of the appeal of vaporwave/chillwave/lo-fi Hip Hop/pretty much most of these internet genres is within the aestheticic presentation of the music and then the audio effects added to the music. Once you’ve got them two sorta you’ve got most the job done with the actual musical aspect being just the side part really
From a legitimate musical perspective it seems like the worst thing imaginable and a formula to wipe out all music made meticulously without formulas, but from a pure internet user/consumer standpoint it’s hella fascinating & shows the creativity of this internet era with an intersection of music & meme culture tbh
