  • During the 2021 Ferrari World Finals at Mugello Circuit there were a total of 8 new Ferrari 488 GT Modificatas. These are Ferrari's new track-only weapons and they can be enjoyed by their owners in private track days/test sessions or during the official Ferrari Club Competizioni GT events.
    The 'Modificata' was born with the idea of having a car that shared in all aspects the soul and technologies of both the 488 GT3 and GTE race cars but without all those limits imposed by technical and sporting regulations of the GT3 and GTE class for the BoP (Balance of Performance). The resulting machine is able to produce up to 700hp (instead of the typical 600 of the GT3/GTE) thanks to some components modifications made to the engine and the use of more extreme maps. The car will be built in a very limited number of examples which will be fully customizable by their owners.
    The 488 GT Modificata shares the exact same body of the 488 GT3 Evo 2020 and it sound pretty much the same. But compared to the GT3 you can notice a slightly different tone in the Modificata's sound (possibly due to higher turbo pressure, a tone more typical of the 488 Challenge or 488 road cars). Turbo flutter noise is also slightly louder than 488 GT3/GTE race cars. The thing that I really distinctly noticed is related to gearshifts sound: 488 GT3 typically makes deep 'explosions' on upshifts, 488 GTE sometimes makes very loud bangs, while this Modificata generally has a very clean noise on upshifts but it spit always little flames similar to the unique P80/C. You can also notice some smoke coming out from the exhaust under accelerations (not visible on 488 GT3s).

    What a fucked world we live in where this is even a thing. Nobody ever asked how fast the C5.R and 993 GT2 and Lotus Espirit GT1 were....because that's why they went racing. Now we've got Ferrari AND McLaren releasing answers to a question that nobody should have to ask in the first place....
    _The resulting machine is able to produce up to 700hp (instead of the typical 600 of the GT3/GTE) thanks to some components modifications made to the engine and the use of more extreme maps. 600 hp is overselling it. GT3s frequently make somewhere around 450-470-ish, from my understanding.
    Also, funnily enough, these things sound EPIC now that the limiters have been removed. Them turbo noises are emanating pure Group B energy. What a glorious car this becomes when it isn't being kneecapped.

      @kronos711 Před 2 lety +11

      To be absolutely honest though, the fact that there is a BOP enforced on these cars kind of is the only reason why we still see competitive racing and it's not like Formula 1 where the richest teams keeps running away with the titles. Of course it would be great to have more freedom of design but it's certainly good this way too.

    • @simoneburini4036
      @simoneburini4036 Před 2 lety +1

      Regardless of BOP (which I myself don't like, I would prefer something a bit different, but it's too long to explain here), engine power is restricted because it would be too expensive (and sometimes impossible) to bring every engine up to 4 liters (in case of turbocharged/supercharged engines) or 8 liters (in case of NA engines). It's as simple as that. If Porsche switched from NA to turbo, then a ton of people (maybe you included, I don't know) would complain about the sound. Also, imagine Lamborghini dropping the NA V10 for the turbocharged 4 liter V8.
      I would like to see the full potential of these cars, but it's not gonna happen. And, honestly, it doesn't need to happen.

    • @kronos711
      @kronos711 Před 2 lety +1

      @@simoneburini4036 Yeah hope there was still some series where alot of design freedom was allowed like the old times. But money is too much of a factor nowadays to make that happen.

    • @AntoniusTyas
      @AntoniusTyas Před 2 lety +2

      Without BoP, certain manufacturers would just romp away with the championship. Look at the old GT1 era. Maserati MC12 basically murdered the entire field from 2004 to 2010. Manufacturers can just throw huge money at the problem, while privateers had to keep shelling out cash just to stay competitive. That's why the cost balloons to unsustainable level back in 2010.
      Now look at both 488 GT Modificata and 720S GT3X. Both cars will cost at least GBP700k to buy, and that's before running costs. Normal GT3 cars only costs something like GBP300-400k. And BoP also let manufacturers with smaller budgets or less powerful cars to compete. Without BoP, Porsche, BMW, and Lexus would never stood a chance to compete for race wins. And don't even think about Emil Frey Jaguar XKR G3 making it to the grid. The formula of BoP from SRO proves to be hugely successful both in GT3 and GT4 in introducing close racing with varieties of winners. That's why these SRO series are so popular these days.

    Le GT3 dovrebbero essere così.. Senza inutili zavorre , senza inutili restrittori , ma con meno modifiche rispetto all'auto di serie. E la 488 o la 720S sono molto più vicine alle versioni di serie rispetto alla Bentley ad esempio , o in misura minore anche alla Vantage.
    Non ha senso limitare la potenza a 550-600 cavalli se si permette di spostare indietro di mezzo metro il motore e di due metri il cambio.. O di avere schemi sospensivi diversi.
