How to make a watercolour sketchbook - simple concertina or accordion from a single piece of paper

- I love concertina sketchbooks - so good for story telling and really easy to make whether you are a beginner or not. You are in control of the size, shape, format and paper and you will probably save money too over buying one in an art shop. I have come up with a series of four different types of hardback sketchbook you can make at home using no specialist equipment, just materials you should have already. There is no sewing involved. I will release a film each week to guide you through the process. What you want to add to them is entirely up to you. Just be warned, this can get addictive!
In this one, we will make a concertina sketchbook made from a single piece of paper which is folded and cut, but not stuck. We will put a hard cover on it though. You have a couple of options of turning the double pages into handy pockets or leaving them as they are.
In the first one, I showed how to make an accordion/concertina book by cutting and sticking strips of paper together. You can see it here: • How to make a watercol...
In the second, I showed how to make a perfect bound sketchbook: • How to make a watercol...
In the final one, I will show you how to make a Ring bound sketchbook.
With thanks to Christie Raley and Michael Ann Fitzgerald for suggesting this topic. If there is a question you want to ask me, just write it in the comments!
Materials:
Cover - mount board, grey board, old hard back book, recycle sketchbook cover
Paper - of your choice - cartridge, watercolour, pastel, acrylic
Glue & brush - white PVA, acid free if possible or glue stick
Scissors/knife/cutting mat/ruler
Bone folder/knife handle/scissors handle
Heavy weights (or cookery books!)
Newspaper, non-stick paper (clean cereal packet middle)
Decoration - up to you!
Optional tape for spine
Many books are sewn, and while these are very durable, the process is more complicated and your will need waxed linen thread, needles, a press etc. If you get bitten by the book binding bug and are interested in taking things further, may I suggest two great books and also a fabulous channel here on CZcams:
Bound - by Rachel Hazel - ISBN:9780857835079
Making Handmade Books - by Alisa Golden - ISBN 9781600595875

I am a full time artist based in Berkshire, UK, and every week I share a tip, trick or technique I wish someone had told me about ages ago. I release them at 2pm on Sunday (UK time), so if you like what you see please like the film and subscribe, plus the notification bell so you will be the first to know about new films.
If you are looking for in-depth online watercolour courses, please head to www.lizchadertonstudio.co.uk and I also do in person workshops in Berkshire. I have written three books: Painting watercolour on canvas, Painting animals in watercolour, Line and Wash Painting. All published by The Crowood Press.

I absolutely love this. I going to make a couple of them this weekend!
I’m in Costa Rica at tge mo and using one for my travel sketches
Lovely to meet you. Hello from Australia. 🌸🌹🪻
Hello 😊
Liz, I love your channel in general - always so inspirational and you provide such great guidance. This series on building sketchbooks is brilliant. I love that you share your actual experience - even the challenges! It allows those of us fussing about to create sketchbooks a bit of relief. Be well! ♥♥
You are so welcome!
Brilliant, Liz! I love the idea of a button. I'm going to try this. But I'll practice first on a plain sheet of paper, so that I have a dry run through. Thanks again!
I hope you find it straight forward. Be warned making books is highly addictive!
@@LizChadertonArt Yes it was and too late with the warning 😜
@@user-zg8yh1ig2y oops!
Thanks!
thank you so much!
I like you, you have a welcoming personality and your tutorials are very easy to follow. Thanks Liz 🤗
Thanks so much! 😊
I think that is very useful and encouraging to see the faults. It is a great lesson too. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
I can't wait to fill all these fun sketchbooks we are making! ❤️
Me too!
This is fantastic! I love the idea of mostly folding (with just a couple long cuts), as opposed to having to cut individual pieces of paper. It makes this technique one that I would be a lot more likely to do. Thank you for sharing!
It’s quick and simple once you get your head round the cuts!
I've made several of these, but I've never seen them with the pockets! Thank you so much for that tip!
I have to admit I saw another artist suggest it in a different way, so I played around and adapted it. I do like pockets and I find the double pages a little awkward to work on, so it’s no loss. the only time I don’t do them is if I want to display the book open as one sheet of paper again.
I love to try this too. No need to buy watercolor book already if I could diy it. Tq Liz for showing it! ❤️
My pleasure 😊 They are really satisfying to make.
Thanks, Liz! The pocket makes good sense❤
Yes it does!
I love this!!! I wanted to make a tiny sketchbook, so I used a letter sized paper folded in 16 to make a tiny sketchbook! I used some cardstock to make a cover. I love that you included the diagrams for where to cut. It's so awesome! Thank you for posting this tutorial!!!!
ooh, that is tiny. I bet it’s really cute.
This is great! I think this one seems more doable for me (rather than the perfect bound one) for when I try my first attempt at making a journal. It's fun that you tried something new, and you really made it work. It's all trial and error with arts & crafts! Thanks again! 💐
it is straight forward and you get a journal to your exact spec rather than compromising.
Great project Liz...Thank you for the tutorial...👍👍
Glad you liked it!
Thanks a lot for clear explanations with your drawing 🙏🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Such a great and thorough teacher, thank you! x
You are so welcome! thank you!
What a great demo! Thanks for sharing xx
Thanks for watching! Be warned making books is addictive 😊
Lovely Liz. Great tutorial. Very creative ideas. I liked the idea of using card stock for the cover. I think a heavier, good quality wrapping paper might be very pretty as well. Thank you for the tutorial.
yes, as long as it doesn’t go wrinkly when you glue it, should be great!
Love this! I’m going on a short 2 day mystery tour in March and will make a smaller version of this one to take along. Can’t wait to get started! Thanks again Liz!
perfect! have a great trip
I love this idea for a book 👍
I'm so glad!
Excellent series of instructional videos, thanks Liz 🙂
You're very welcome! I am glad you enjoyed them. Have you made any?
Liz, just watched a demo you did with 3 ducks. It was great to watch, you should add a link, or get the video for your viewers, just a thought
That’s a good idea. will see what I can do.
Thank you Liz ,lovely demo,do you mind me asking what weight/thickness of paper in Gsm do you use ? Thanks
It was about 90lbs, just a thick drawing/cartridge paper, so it can take a light was if I want.
@@LizChadertonArt Wonderful thanks Liz , so in British gsm that would be around 185Gsm
@@maieyanni1473 you can use whatever weight paper you like (or have). I’ve made them with heavier watercolour paper and with cartridge. It’s worth thinking of the end use. They are fun to make and use.
