I suffered from this for 2 years. What worked for me was Accupuncture specifically the motuboxin method. One treatment and I was cured.

I have it on the left side of the face. Your information is well received. I had botox injections but to no success. My eye and lip never slowed with ticking. My left eye couldn't close properly and I drooled.

I am a hemi facial spasm sufferer. I have joined a Hemi Facial Spasm Worldwide support group on Facebook. I found your presentation easy to understand and actually posted your presentation to the support group today and must say, got some wonderful comments. Your presentation covered much of what some knew and others not. One member was very interested..but wondered why some MVD operations are not successful...or what could have happened in this instance.

    Thanks for your comment
Most experienced surgeons in micro vascular decompression should achieve greater than 90% successful outcomes
Reasons for less than optimal results can include very large vessels that contact the nerve which are difficult to move away and pad completely and other anatomical variations

I have had HFS since 2002. It has progressed so much that I am now on disability. I don't know if it's related but since the spasms have become severe I have developed tinnitus. and vertigo. MEDICAID won't pay for it, which I understand as it is expensive. I just stay pretty much a recluse. I catch people staring at me when they think I don't notice. Hats and sunglasses are my best friends! lol

I'm positive this is what my son has. He's 5 and we noticed when he was 3 that his eye would twitch once in a while...but as of late, it has increased dramatically. It's now looking like he's winking constantly. Our family doctor said it was nothing but she's been wrong before and I'm sure she is again. Would you say botox for a 5 year old or surgery would be better?

From my experience hemifacial spasm is an earthquake that occurs in the right part of my head. When the spasms/swtching starts I also hear vibrations in my right ear and I can not breath from my right nostril. I've been scared of both the surgery and botox but i need to start from some point as it's becoming unbearable. Thank you for the valuable knowledge.

I had hemifacial spasm years ago on my left and right side of my face. I was treated with an injection of Botox and it was successful. Unfortunately, l've started having them again following by months of physical pain and stress. My question is could pain and stress brought on my facial spasm back?

      Hi Linda
      Thanks for your question
Stress can make the symptoms of hfs worse and stress reduction can make symptoms better if the condition is mild
Often if symptoms get worse simple stress reduction may not eliminate the spasms and repeat injections or other treatments may be needed
      Hope this helps

Dr. David W Newell, I have had microvascular decompression (MVD) on my right side in S'pore in 2008. Just a month ago (Oct 2018), I started to experience spasms returning and am praying for a total healing and set free from hemifacial spasm again. Meanwhile, may I know from you Dr. Newell, were there patients who also experienced spasms returned and needing a second microvascular decompression? Is it advisable to go for a second surgery (MVD) when spasm returns? Thank you.

Recurrence is well known in not every case but in some cases yes. Most of the time it's not recurrence but anxiety which pushes you to feel the twitching.
Try to calm down, treat your anxiety.
If there is definit recurrence one can go for redo surgery in expert hands.
