I have an oddly specific story about my first shiny, pokemon diamond was the first pokemon game I've played and the first pokemon I caught in the game was a bidoof,it wasn't until 3 years later when I was going through my storage box and saw bidoof in there and then I noticed a star was marked on it and that's when it dawned on me,the FIRST TIME I'VE CAUGHT A POKEMON,the pokemon I caught was a shiny! Can you imagine how astronomically absurd the odds have to be for that to happen! What incredible luck for such a thing to happen.
And that's the story of my first shiny (and my first caught pokemon)

I always thought the blue unown was just a reference to "Homework must be written in blue or black ink". But I think that was my kid brain filling in it's own lore and never questioning it later.
That's pretty big brain kid logic
notice how the unowns spelled out 'Gnoggin'
I accept this reasoning. This is now why unown are blue
That's not a bad theory
Red pens were extremely common at my school.
Furthermore, a lot of my homework was only allowed to be handed in as a typed essay, and journals or worksheets could be completed in pencil. Scantrons just didn't like mechanical pencils, so we all had to use the regular ones.
Actually, there's a lot more behind Lugia's shiny. Lugia is one of the favorite Pokémon of gamefreak in fact, thus, it's one of the actually edited shinies. Its red and white is ment to represent a certain shrine or temple in Japan, which is called "temple of seas" or something similar to that. If I'm not entirely mistaken, it should be the Itsukushima shrine.
I might be fully mistaken about the details as this is something I learned about years ago, but Lugia's shiny colors are actually chosen by hand to match those of a popular sea shrine.
“Smeargle is all about pain”

Espeons shiny is my favorite of the "randomly green" shinies. A lot of them have a really unsettling puke/piss green color, but espeons is vibrant and neon, which makes it look alien, which I think fits with it's two pronged tail and large vacant eyes
Looked to me like Espeon is thinking "I already destroyed you five times over in my mind right now."
Espy's shiny is one of my favorites. I personally think that it kind of an emerald green. Which is why if and when I ever get a shiny Espeon, I'm nicknaming it Emmy.
I mean I think shiny Espeon is great. At least it changes. Looking at you Leaf and Glaceon.
Neon-green is almost yellow and doesn‘t really look good at all. I‘ve always thought that Espeon‘s green is kind of like an emerald.
Finally somebody who gives a decent explanation for shiny Espeon. Also, there’s a reference to Final Fantasy’s Carbuncle.

Fun fact, Ho-oh's original design was intended to use its shiny palette rather than the final one. That's why it's all gold in the first episode of the anime. Why they decided to change it from golden to multicolored was never publicly stated as far as I can find, but it does mean Ash didn't just see a Ho-oh in the first episode of the anime, but a shiny one.
I want all color theory and coding lessons be framed around pokemon and taught by lockstin. This is because it would genuinely make me learn something and attribute that knowledge to something I like, thus letting me remember it better.
I'm tempted to take notes while watching this because I feel like the way the whole deal is presented is sticking with me. I love it!

Mewtwo has a good green shiny
I actually really like Espeon's shiny. It reminds me of a little psychic alien kitty. It's not a bad green either imo. It's a nice green that's not faded or a obnoxiously bright green. It's a space kitty & that's awesome. Even Espeon's cry sounds like a cat and alien like
I used to *_hate_* Espeon's Shiny before hearing this explanation. Now I don't mind it at all. Now I just only hate Jolteon's Shiny. Rest of the eeveelutions get a pass for their shinies.

Yeah man,Shiny Umbreon looks so majestic and nice,it's probably one of my favorite Shiny in this Generation

A possible explanation for Espeon. Espeon seems to also be based on a Carbuncle, a mythical creature with a gem embedded in it's head. On top of this, common depictions of Carbuncles are often shown as green, one of the most famous examples being the Carbuncle summon from Final Fantasy
DO NOT LOOK UP CARBUNCLE WITHOUT THE WORD MYTHOLOGY WORST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE
I always took Espeon's shiny as referencing a green flash since it evolves during the day. I liked how vivid the green was for Espeon.
I just always looked as shiny Espeon as an homage to Carbuncle, with the green fur and red ruby.
Now I can't unsee it. It's like now I will expect a shiny Espeon to cast reflect automatically first turn
Your turn Crystal Beast Ruby Carbuncle!
@@runningoncylinders3829 cant wait for Advanced Dark to activate so it learns to embody heavy metal

stantler i always found kinda fascinating since its lore makes it sound like it can straight up bend physics.
He did actually come back to Stantler after a couple of entries (likely expecting the possible reaction in the comments), but there really isn't much of a reason for Pokémon like Stantler and Ursaring to have such color schemes - Lockstin had to reeeally stretch to make an excuse for them...

I've always interpreted the Azumarill line taking some inspiration from Easter Eggs, considering they are rabbits that are shaped like eggs, but the blue and white pattern on Azumarill in particular brings me back to Easter Egg painting with those fun dots and wave paterns. And I think the Green and Yellow colors PERFECTLY capture the spring aesthetic around Easter; if I imagine a green and yellow painted egg, it would be these exact shades.

I'd like to imagine that the blue on Girafarig is a reference to the blue tongues giraffes can have.
Lockstin: "Espeon is disgusting."

I think the green makes espeon look like an alien, I quite like it!
Kinda had the thought of since Espeon evolves during the daylight hours. Maybe the shiny references the Green Flash? And that was later reused for lycanroc
I always thought that shiny Espeon's green color made it look more like an alien especially since the psychic type is sometimes associated with space and aliens. It makes sense to me.
Stantler's shiny could be based on the golden dear in Ramayana. The one Sita wanted and Ram went after,. Turns out, it was just an illusion, referencing its psychic powers.
shiny espeon is an adorable alien cat, you're all just cowards
Even the actual alien cat in the cartoon show where it always destroys a boy and his sister gets mad at him because he confronts the cat(I forgot the shows name. Hope my description works) is pink and not green. Even all cats on it's homeplanet are not green, not a single one.

I love how the music steadily gets more distorted as we delve further into pinkmageddon.
I'd love to see you talk about shinies that have changed over the years, like how Swinub used to be blue and pink but is now pale green and pink! And maybe the differences between GBC shinies and Stadium 2 shinies? Shinies appear differently in both the GB Tower and with the actual models. I think it'd be an interesting topic, because no one really talks about it.
Unpopular opinion: shiny Espeon looks really cool
It's not actually that unpopular, because it's freakin dope.
"Common depictions of tsuchinocos are pink-"
Me: looks at screen. *DANGER DARK WORLD FTK FLASHBACKS*
I believe Umbreon's shiny in addition to being a certain shade of blue like the moon also is that color because of the common saying: once in a blue moon. Considering how rare are shinies are, this would be perfect
The green on Skarmory makes a lot of sense actually if it's pallet is that of iron. When melted, iron will release slag (impurities in the metal) and when cooled this slag is like a green tinted glass.
Huh, I always thought Celebi was a red onion
It probably is because of that
I always see Granbulls shiny as a hairless dog lol and I actually like the shiny Easpeon
The video went directly from Magcargo to an ad with burgers grilling, and I was looking away so I thought it was probably some joke with a fire effect. Got really confused for a second when I looked back.

You're so valid I entirely agree
Tbh I just thought the green was pretty as a kid lmao
Google: Final fantasy carbuncle and tell me it's not a reference lol
@@kerriedasilva1583 it's not a reference because they're procedurally generated
the recent improvement to the sprite (making it a still saturated but non-offensive forest green instead of looking like broccoli and peas baby food) bumped espeon way up on my eeveelution rankings
When the camera zoomed in Lockstin's face while he said "It's a girly fairy" at the end, I just realized he's very hot
A common school experiment is putting celery into colored water to observe a change in appearance when it would absorb it. The most apparent results were usually blue and red, with the red usually looking pinkish. This is the biggest stretch of a connection with Celebi I could think of aside from "pink fairy".
Green Espeon always reminded me of several of the green Carbuncles from Final Fantasy - a cute fluffy mammal with a red gem on its forehead and magical powers. In some incarnations it literally looks like an Eeveelution.
And the Final Fantasy carbuncle is based on a legendary creature from South American folklore.
Personally, I love crazy green Espeon. One of my favorite shinies tbh...
"-Espeon is disgusting-"
I should not have laughed at that is hard as I did
I would also suspect Celebi might also be reference to red onions (pink and red are close enough, plus red onions are pinker inside the bulb)
Houndour and Houndoom are actually a really cool reference to that one of the accepted colors for dobermans in the breed standard is 'blue (gray) and tan'! They're one of my favorite shinies because of it.
16:23
Huh...Celebi does have more Fairy like qualities and powers than psychic...Why didn’t they change its Psychic typing to Fairy? Because it’s a mythical Pokemon? They’ve never changed the base typing of any legend or mythical Pokémon that I’m aware of so I guess that’s it?
Espeon is actually my favorite shiny.
Personally aggron is my favourite shiny (mainly cuz it's my first shiny well technically it was its pre evolution but I forgot its name)
You saying “it’s a girly fairy” in that time of voice at the end made me crack up. Can’t wait for your next video
I wished you had both the non-shiny and the shiny on screen at once, so we can compare. I can't remember every single detail on every pokémon. You have left space below, where you can put the normal variant, then replace it with whatever photo you show later.
Shoot man, hopefully after two weeks or so it'll light up for you. ;;v;;
Imagine a rock/bug jewel bug pokemon that takes its species' name literally. That would actually be sick
Fun vid as always! You didnt mention it but Smeargle is a pokemon that had its shiny and regular colours swapped between generations, in Gen 2 the shiny colour was the one with the green tail and the regular was the more orange/brown-ish one. Come Gen 3 onwards those were swapped around.
*Other trainers see my green Espeon*
Me: "She's just going through a phase."

12:11 I always thought that Slugma's shiny might be a reference to Metal Slimes in Dragon Quest, but this works too.
Another factor that I think is used for making shinies are color invertion, like in later generation, some like Litten's line just had the blacks turn into whites or with , similar case with Espeon from light pink or purple to green and also with Pupitar from green to purple, altho when light colors gets inverted, they turn into a darker shade of the other color but still the same case, they may just get adjusted for the colors to appear brighter
Shiny espeon was my first shiny so him said it was disgusting it made me sad
Espeon's shiny resembles an LGM, and aliens/space are common inspirations to the psychic type

I think part of Lugia's pink coloring comes from its partial basis on Ryujin, who in some versions of the shinto myth lived in a palace made from red and white corals. And I mean, pink is just light red.
Shiny Espeon is like: Whyme ewnior
Austin, I will not have you slander my beautiful boy Limespeon like that. He is a 5 star, 10/10 shiny and he should be treated as such.
Also owls are depicted as wise and you mention this a lot, gold represents psychic powers or something and Noctowl can learn some psychic moves.

I feel that Dunsparce's Shiny coloring, if a reference to anything, may be a nod to pre-pupal hawk moth caterpillars. Some hawk moth caterpillars, which turn a pinkish color shortly before pupation, mimic snakes and actually have a history of being mistaken for the tsuchinoko.
Also, I imagine that Espeon's green coloring, combined with its category as the Sun Pokémon, likely represents chlorophyll's role in photosynthesis. However, it could also be a reference to another mythical creature that it may draw inspiration from, the carbuncle, which seems to be commonly depicted with green coloring.
Swinub's Shiny may be a reference to watermelons, Skarmory oxidized metal, and Celebi roses or other pink flowers given that its head looks like a flower bud.
The stadium and GameCube 3D Pokémon games had wildly different shinies for a lot of Pokémon and probably my favorite was Umbreon from colosseum because the rings just glowed rainbow colors instead of the blue in the main series games.
Chikorita looks like a ripe winter pear! They only go ripe during the winter, but you have to pick them in the late summer/early fall, after the leaves fall.
You forgot that pollywag including pollytoad are glass frogs crogunk and it's line are posian dart frogs.
6:20 missed opportunity to bring up that in Gen 2 shiny sudowoodo leafs are pink rather than red in later versions of its shiny. Which is a possible reference to sakura trees. With those be known for pink leafs as well.
Better explanation for shiny Celebi: Celebi is known as the Onion-Fairy Pokémon, and onions typically grow in 4 different colors; White, Yellow, Red, and Green. It’s normal colors being closer to that of a classic green onion, and it’s shiny closer to that of a red onion that’s been pickeled pink! Alternatively, the two most common colors associated today with fae are green and pink.
