    My mom had one of these in her office that we got from Target. Last year she brought it back home because she found she wasn't using it while in her office. It works for an office environment where you can't turn the volume up loud as to disturb others, but it doesn't work if you're looking for excellent sound quality.

    Those Maxell UR cassettes are surprisingly good for normal bias tapes. One of the mixtapes I found at a garage sale was recorded on a UR tape and the sound quality just blew my mind. I actually did a video of it a few days ago. That Jensen unit reminds me of the ultra cheap Venturer CD/cassette player I got for my 10th birthday, way back in 1995. Played the hell out of my Billy Joel discs on that thing. "Tell Her About It" with absolutely no bass or treble...mm-hmm.

    Most of the cd players in this kind of units are using the same chasis. It was simply plug and play and you could easily replace the whole cd player mechanism including the motor and board. The trouble with this kind of laser pick-up is not the lens. you could clean that easily with a cotton swab. The problem is that by design the laser diode/pickup is placed parallel to the cd, so there is a small mirror inside the laser assembly which "bends" the laser 90 degrees so it is perpendicular to the cd. That damn mirror gets incredibly dirty quite fast and to clean it you have to take the whole thing apart with a high chance of getting poor results.

    • @markm0000

    • @sobolanul96
      @sobolanul96 Před 6 lety

    Got a near identical Craig Branded one for free at my local dump’s free store. It has a September 2020 date at the bottom and had never been used as there was still cardboard protector sitting in the cd mechanism.
    Really feels cheap, no headphone jack either. But honestly it’s the rare thrift find for me where the cassette player actually works without me having to open it up and do something. I suppose those belts haven’t disintegrated in the less than 2 years of its existence.
    It’s so small I’ll keep it around for the shop. Wish it was louder though.

    @Vwestlife, today I bought a CD-545 for $6 in near-mint condition at a local Goodwill. The manufacturing date on my CD-545 is September 2016. I'll list some more observations below, but I had a question for you: can the Aux In be used to connect a microphone for recording?
    My CD-545 functions as you described. The cassette speed is fast, so musical pitch is shifted upward. The cassette playback doesn't exhibit an abnormal amount of wow and flutter or speed variance when playing piano music, it's merely off-pitch. The speakers seem to buzz sometimes. I don't know if the buzzing speaker sound reflects amplifier clipping, or if CD-545 was damaged (abused) by the prior owner. Visually my CD-545 looks brand-new and included the original AC power cable. Glad I saw your video, I was confused about the tuning since it worked but I had expected to see the station frequency on the digital display. Overall sound quality is adequate, build quality is adequate, CD player functions, cassette player functions.

    I always see Sony Boomboxes at the Goodwill for cheap, most of them worked when I tested them, my last one was from the goodwill had a great tape deck on it but my Dads cat peed on it and I didnt know I was away all weekend so it got ruined, it was a CD/Tape and radio now the one I have I found at a garage sale for 5 it is just CD and Radio but I lost my tapes anyways it is a sony as well. I find Sony Boomboxes tend to sound great. I like the styles of ones from the late 90's to early 00's mine is a 2005 S2 and it has a very unique design thats why its my favorite right now. That Panasonic one is really good from what I hear but seriously I have never seen a Sony Boombox at a thrift shop for more then ten bucks and Sony's seem to last forever unless a cat pees on them lol

    Background noise is due to the fact that more than likely this boombox uses a permanent erase magnet instead of an Actual AC-BIAS Erase Head to erase the tape while it's recording. Permanent erase magnets tend to record awful, thunder-like noise while erasing the tape. Nowadays, they are either blue or silver. Sony CFD-S70 uses a black permanent erase magnet which surprisingly doesn't sound that bad. Cheap stereo/mono systems usually use blue one.

    @robelicit Před 6 lety +1

    You ought to consider making a series that covers aspects of ur own music interests & history in music (i remember ur video of the FM transmitter \ mini broadcast station scenario that you maintain as a hobby, etc.)...
    in fact, as soon as I read the comments,
    I realized many of your other fans we're talking about the music as well,,
    such as Boz Scaggs "Lowdown," or the "Love Boat Theme" (Kaaahhhnnn 🚀), Oasis connections, and more.
    ...btw,
    What is that classic
    song on ur CD @11:10 ?
    .... I'm old enough to
    actually remember that song when it came out -- I had a friend who was a DJ in commercial (FM) radio,
    and a few gr8 old friends who were on college + public radio back in the 80s 🎧🎶🎼🎹

      @robelicit Před 6 lety +1

      VWestlife ...thanx, yes that's the song. Btw, I clicked on your link just now and realize I had subscribed to your music channel once many
      months ago and just have forgotten to
      go check it out (hah,,signs of old age))...
      Btw,,,, you really oughta kick around the idea of doing your own 2 or 3-part video story\ documentary on music..
      I mean they're all kinds of angles you could take,
      such as music that you personally like or that got you connected to electronics and radio,,
      that kind of thing -- I guess I find that kind of local or personal music story to be more compelling than
      the highly overproduced music documentaries that we've all been inundated by on TV and radio since the 90s, if you follow me.....
      I don't know if I'm exactly describing this that well..
      I'd recently moved back to a city that I lived in 30 years ago and one of the best side benefits is that I've been listening to the public as well as College radio stations that
      influenced me when I was in my teens and 20s and it's just been great to see the dedicated kind of personal world of music that still thrives on radio in this era of big budget corporate and MTV oversaturation. 🚀

    Oh man, those cheap "boomboxes" are everywhere, under various brands and styles. This one actually doesn't sound as terrible as a lot of the ones I've seen, but they all have that same crappy tuner. It performs better than I expected though.
    Richard Mainway's music is the type of stuff you'd hear at an amateur musicians show at a small venue. Maybe he played at such a show and he had a small batch of CDs made to sell there.... and/or maybe not enough people bought the CDs and he moved on from music, and the unsold copies were donated to the thrift store. I've seen that before. The CD is definitely worth a listen though.
    The CD player probably has the innards from a cheap off-brand Discman, which would explain why it doesn't skip (too much) when shaking it around, and why you have to clip the CD in place. A component CD player not meant to be moved around would skip a lot more than that.

    I have a very similar model (the 550) which has exactly the same features and looks almost identical but NOBODY ever mentions (or seems to notice) the main problem I have with this CD - that it ADDS gaps in between tracks on CD playback. For instance, on a live album you generally have no gaps because there's always applause or a guitarist noodling in between songs, but on THIS CD player, there are 1 second pauses in between the tracks. Or say Dark Side Of The Moon where all of the tracks (normally) flow into each other, but nope - not on this CD player. It has that damn one second gap. (It might be less than a second, but it sure is noticeable and irritating.) Has no one else noticed this???? And for the record, I'm not talking about cd-roms, but retail CDs I've owned for EONS.

    My grandma has an RCA RCD175 or similar looking model. I used to use the cassette recorder at the end of the first round of my cassette days (2012 or so) I can't recall if it was good or not. Plus i was recording crappy quality audio to the cassette. I think it was a Fuji Type II, idk where it went! :(
    I hate these cassette players that have the head and pinch rollers at the top. Makes it difficult to manually clean.

    I've had only one experience with this kind of tuner, being on a Technical Pro receiver I bought for real cheap just to see how it sounded. Needless to say I wasn't impressed at all with it, especially being inside of what was sold as a home theater receiver.

      Funny my technical pro receiver has a normal digital tuner.... The version on the website however has that kind of dial knob tuner. Lol. For a low end receiver it sounds nice. Better than sony's budget stereo receivers.
