    EVENT DESCRIPTION
We'll be discussing how to properly maintain your oboe between professional tune-ups (to prevent things from breaking down), and touch on some very basic repair techniques for dealing with emergencies when things DO break down. While we won't cover comprehensive repair techniques like installing pads or how to diagnose every possible problem, the hope is to give you a "toolkit" that you can use to keep your oboe going when you can't get it to a technician right away.
In addition to taking questions from the live viewers, topics to be discussed include:
Using a swab vs. a feather
When and how to oil the mechanism
Oiling the wood-should you or shouldn't you?
Humidifying your instrument to prevent cracks
How cracks develop and behave, and where to look for them
The different types of pads we use, and why
Common regulation problems and how to address them
Other problem spots in the mechanism and how to address them
Issues that arise over time from lack of maintenance
How to free a stuck regulation screw
What to do about water in tone holes
If time permits, I'll discuss a little bit of the theory behind pad installation and show an abbreviated demonstration to help explain why things sometimes go wrong with pads, though you won't come out the session ready to install your own pads.

Awesome video! One question I've owned several humistats and they seem to deteriorate through the sponge after many many months. Any suggestions for replacement material to put in or is it time to replace it?
