Adaptive Left-hand Alto Sax, version 2
The second left-hand-only sax to be modified here at the shop, this one is keyed to play all the way down to Low C using a combination of pinky keys (F#, F, and E) and thumb keys (D, Eb, C, and C#). That means this sax can play the full range of a regular saxophone except for Low B and Low Bb. The pinky mechanisms were set up several years ago by Brian Russell at Russell Winds, who mentored me on this sax and the previous one.
For more about the theory and mechanics behind these modifications, there are other videos on my channel that delve into greater detail on the other one-handed sax, which is almost identical to this one except that it can't play Low C or Low C#.
These modifications required about 100 hours of work to complete, from concept and design to final assembly and testing. All the parts except the minibals and screws were custom manufactured and installed in house from raw brass and steel.

    I notice the right hand keys continue to move while you play the notes with your left hand. Is it still possible to play the notes with the default fingerings with this system? If so then it's brilliant. You basically have alternate fingerings for every note that use the right hand. Excellent work sir.

      You can play down to Low D using the standard fingerings, though it feels klunky because of all the extra mechanisms following along with the movements.

    Can it be played with both hands too?

    • @KeystoneMusicRepair
      @KeystoneMusicRepair Před 2 lety

      Huh, good question. The F#, F, and E are activated by rockers, so they could be played with the right hand and it would feel pretty much the same, maybe a little clunky. The Eb, D, and C are permanently attached to the new mechanisms by Minibals, so you could activate them with the right hand but you'd also be "pulling" the new mechanisms along so it would feel heavy from all that extra mass. The C# can only be played with the thumb mechanism, and the Low B and Bb can't be played at all because their touchpieces were repurposed for the F#, F, and E. I have a video that goes into a little more detail here: czcams.com/video/Sz4O8Oh8NqE/video.html

    @s.m8766 Před 2 lety

    Wow, what an amazing piece of work, very interesting! Two questions: The side B flat key is also just left on there for cosmetic reasons? Is it playable for a two-handed person like the low C and E flat seem to be? Also, how do you play a D in the upper octave? Do you have to press the octave key and also one of the new touch pieces?

    • @KeystoneMusicRepair
      @KeystoneMusicRepair Před 2 lety

      The side Bb isn't in the way, so it's easier to leave it in place. It could be used by someone who has the use of both hands, the same is true with the side F#. Upper octave D can be played with just the palm key (no octave key), which is how the owner of this sax has been playing it, however the intonation is spotty. Now he also has the option of fingering a low D and adding the palm key, which essentially acts as an octave key for just that fingering. You could also lip it up if your embouchure is strong enough. It's not really possible to reach the octave key while playing any of the other thumb keys.

    This is a rather comprehensive guide on checking for problems on a Clarinet.Regarding drying up moisture within the clarinet, I believe that it might not be sufficient to just drag a drying rag through the assembled unit. I noticed there is some moisture between the joints. I am not an expert on wooden clarinet. However, moisture left between the joints might not be good for the unit. I have always taken the whole unit apart and dry the barrels and the ends of them. I even put a piece of tissue under the pads to remove any trace of moisture. May be I am being too factitious?

    • @KeystoneMusicRepair
      @KeystoneMusicRepair Před 3 lety

      That's a great point, and something I should have mentioned in the video. I do the same, especially on wooden instruments where the end grain of the wood is exposed at the ends of the joints, and that can absorb a lot of moisture relative to the cross grain in the bore. On plastic instruments it's less of a concern (although you can get some buildup over time in the sockets). Keep doing what you're doing!
