  • A complete playthrough of Seika's 1993 Super NES game, Thunder Spirits
    Thunder Spirits is a heavily modified port of TechnoSoft's arcade shooter, Thunder Force AC, which in turn was an alternative version of the Sega Genesis game Thunder Force III).
    It's unfortunately really easy on its default difficulty level. I only had to play this a few times through over the course of an afternoon before I was good enough to make this playthrough. I think I only died once? I'm not sure. Either way, think of it as the lite beer of the genre. It looks and sounds great, though!

    Now that TechnoSoft has been absorbed into SEGA, this is officially considered a SEGA game on Nintendo Hardware. (If this game were to be released through Super Nintendo - Nintendo Switch Online.)

      @@X2011racer Sega pretty much re-releases that one constantly. Sega even put it on PS2, the PS1 version, with loading screens removed,and cleaned up sprites for the Puyo's. The game looks, and sounds fantastic, plus you can choose remixed, or the original arcade tunes (just like the PS1 release).

    Given the snes can put in 256 colors on screen compared to the genesis 64. You would think they should at least make it look better.

    A game where the Genesis version won pretty much every category.
    Graphics: Usually grainy graphics are a weakness of the Genesis, but here the SNES version has grainier graphics.
    Audio: The music for SNES was actually pretty good, but it could not hope to compare to the Genesis. Technosoft were masters of the Genesis sound chip, so naturally they made the music match it's abilities better.
    Gameplay: Largely identical, but the consistent slowdown means that the SNES definitely loses. It's still fun, but nowhere near as smooth.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Před 3 lety +1

      Technosoft didn't release this one, Seika did,and they weren't known for being great game developers.

    I didn't realize there was an option menu for autofire. Even reviews out there state it's missing autofire as a down side.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 Před 4 lety

      @referral madness interesting. Or they didn't realize there was an options. I use to hate this game because I didn't see an autofire option or any options. Turned out you had to press a certain button to access it. They may not have realized. I'm sure it's in the instruction book though.
      My theory is it's turned off to boot to avoid slowdown, since the game plays smoother and faster without it.
      The Genesis version autofire is always on, so I can't think of another reason why they'd have it off.

    • @daganisoraan
      @daganisoraan Před 4 lety +1

      @@Lightblue2222 It was actually rather common at the time to have "hidden" options menu in shooters. I say "hidden" because if you had the intruction booklet, you would have seen which button to press to access the menu, which in this case is select+start.

      @@daganisoraan true. Space Harrier II comes to mind. I just happened to press the right button.
      Arcade shmups never had autofire. Lots of games come with it off and have to turn it on in options. But this is one game where autofire is must imo. Genesis has it from the getgo. Even the weak enemy's take multiple bullets to kill so it was made for autofire.

      @@Lightblue2222 True, Thunder Spirits like many shooters of the time should only had two buttons, change weapons and change speed. Do we really need to hold the fire button for 30-60 minutes if there's autofire ;)

    This game was terrible on SNES. It didn't look as good, it didn't sound as good, it didn't play as good, and it had some nasty slowdown.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 Před 4 lety

      I enjoyed it, it's good practice for the Genesis version since the autofire cuts the speed in half especially during chaotic parts.

    • @Lightblue2222
      @Lightblue2222 Před 4 lety +1

      @referral madness I had fun with it. Even with the slowdown it's still challenging.
      The autofire is what slows it down. It's turned off to boot but a hidden options turns it on. This game needs autofire imo. The slowdown doesn't make it a bad game. It's still fluid and the music sounds good.
      Edit- if this was the only version of the game, no one would complain.

    • @Bloodreign1
      @Bloodreign1 Před 2 lety +3

      It's not bad, it just needs one of those SA-1 hacks to fix the speed properly. The music is still rather nice, it even tries to sound like FM Synth, instead of using symphonic sound like many SNES games use. This was a straight port of the arcade game, but originated on the Genesis/MD, and games usually backported from that console don't tend to far as well on the SNES, and games from the SNES tended not to work well on the Genesis. This is why these 2 consoles were worlds apart, unlike the consoles of today.

      @@Bloodreign1 Thanks for the clarification. I'd be curious to see the optimized hack version you're talking about. However I prefer the MD version.
